Clouds moving into the Catalina Mountains outside of Tucson

The parrots at Gatorland are very noisy ... eardrum-shatteringly noisy, in fact. They are also in a shaded area where the light is quite low and are usually surrounded by people and messy backgrounds, which makes photographing them a bit of a challenge. Still, they're so colourful they're worth waiting for. When I looked at images of macaws I couldn't find this one, but after a bit of digging around I now think it's probably a Catalina macaw, which is a hybrid ... a cross between a Blue & Gold and a Scarlet macaw. Because it's a hybrid it doesn't have a scientific name. They're said to be 'curious, feisty and extremely active.' I'd say this one definitely fitted the brief!

The Consolidated PBY Catalina, was a versatile flying boat used by various nations during and after World War II. It was known for its long-range capabilities, ability to land on water, and served in roles such as reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue. The Catalina played a crucial role in maritime operations during the war and has a significant place in aviation history.

Here's an image I captured on 1/17/2016 where you can see Comet C/2013 US10, Catalina, as if it was doing an approach to M101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy. In reality, they're about 21 million light-years away between each other, and while the comet is just a modestly sized icy ball, M101 has a diameter of 170,000 light-years.

On the summit of the Cerro de Santa Catalina it was already raised in the s. IX an old citadel of Caliphate origin. Centuries later, after the conquest of the city by Ferdinand III in 1246 the Christian castle was built that has reached to this day. In the nineteenth century, because of the invasion of Napoleonic troops, the castle underwent a series of reforms in order to strengthen the defensive structures. Very close to the castle, in the 60s the building that houses the National Parador was built. From the summit you can see spectacular views of the city and surroundings, in particular from the viewpoint of the Cross. The fortress houses the new interpretation center where a tour of the castle's history is made.

I was lucky enough to view the recent full moon from the quaint town of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California. The ink black night and Pacific Ocean were beautifully punctuated by la luna. What a view those boaters had!

Located north of Tucson in the Oro Valley, the Catalina Mountains dominate the eastern skyline.

While visiting, the temperature reached 90F although the humidity was only 10%. On the same day, it snowed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, some 1000 mile drive away.

This park has many bike and hiking trails and is worth a visit except perhaps in the summer. Spectacular lightning storms from the southwest monsoon might be worth a summer visit if you are into this type of photography.

Taken at the Torbay Airshow in Paignton, The Consolidated PBY Catalina, also known as the Canso in Canadian service, was an American flying boat, and later an amphibious aircraft of the 1930s and 1940s produced by Consolidated Aircraft. It was one of the most widely used seaplanes of World War II

Catalina Island sits just off the coast of Southern California. The air in winter is sometimes clear enough for the island to be seen from shore, and on a perfect night the sun sets over the island.

The image is a blend of two bracketed exposures of the same subject--one exposure to highlight the sand and sky and the other for the rocks and waves. Taken at Crystal Cove State Park in Orange County, CA.
