Every building in Catalina is decorated with beautiful hand-gazed tiles. These tiles were made from 1927 to 1937 in a factory set up by William Wrigley to a) use the island's clay deposits and b) give the islanders employment. They are now collectors pieces.
Note (see comment below): this tile is actually a beautiful modern reproduction from RTK Studios.

The Consolidated PBY Catalina taking to the skies, showing the grace of this classic flying boat. Used extensively in WWII for patrol, reconnaissance, and rescue, the Catalina remains one of the most recognisable amphibious aircraft. Captured here as it climbs away from Duxford.
Took the last several days off from chasing and went on vacation with my girlfriend to the Catalina Island of California. Needless to say, this island is a special kind of beautiful.
Point Vicente Lighthouse in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, looking out past the surf towards Santa Catalina Island in the distance. I pulled this one out from deep in my archives, during a recent backup and housecleaning session. Taken with a little pocket point-and-shoot superzoom that I used to carry with me everywhere. I sure do miss southern California.

The "Flying Boats" are vintage DC-3 airplanes which ferry people back and forth from Long Beach airport to Catalina Island's "Airport in the Sky".
(EDIT: #204 Explore. Nice surpirse to wake up to on SBS. Found out I was as high as #179, spent most of the day at #266, and ended at #277)
Although painted to represent a USAAC OA-10 Catalina based in Halesworth, Suffolk in WW2, this is actually an ex Canadian example which served the RCAF as '11005'.
The original 433915 aircraft operated out of Halesworth airfield in the role of air sea rescue during 1945 and on 30th March that year after landing to provide help to of all things another stricken flying boat the aircraft lost use of one engine. With high seas that meant she was stuck just a few miles off the Dutch coast. Whilst bobbing around on the surf on the first night a pair of ME210's strafed the Catalina to such an extent that she was listing and no longer airworthy. Four days later after enduring constant seasickness and regular immersion in freezing sea water the crew were rescued by a launch sent out from Great Yarmouth. A second launch then destroyed and sank the Catalina rather than have her fall into enemy hands.
For the above reasons the preservation society chose to adopt the identity of the sunken sister aircraft. The preserved aircraft is now based at Duxford with Catalina Aircraft Ltd.

Most of the homes on Catalina Island are only in a 1 square mile just off the harbor. Most of the rest of the island is kept just as it was for thousands of years. Everything on the island is either up or down so the homes are built right on the side of the mountain.

A Consolidated PBY Catalina lifts off from the runway as the twin radial engines roar to life. This legendary flying boat, famed for long-range patrols and daring search-and-rescue missions in World War II, continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts with its timeless design and graceful performance.

While in Huntington Beach, my friends and I took the ferry over to Catalina Island. I love that place. I had wanted to do the new zip line they have there but it was completely booked.
Unfortunately, some issues have come up that have forced me to change some of my plans and head home. I am really disappointed about missing some of the sights I was going to see and meeting up with some of the people I had planned on. I will contact you all and explain more.
I'm in a mad rush right now to get on the road and head for Reno and will then be heading east.
I will try to keep in touch but will be travelling a lot in the next while. I have a lot of miles to cover!!

The former Catalina Motel in Lexington, Kentucky. There used to be letters spelling it out but "MOTEL" is all that's left.
I was over on Point Ferman today above the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbors. I enjoyed the scene painted by the clouds and sun between me and the island of Catalina. The red sailed boat was a nice topper. Thought somebody else out there might enjoy the view.
So this weekend marks my third destination wedding of the year, and it was on a semi-popular island off Los Angeles called Catalina. I’d only been to the island once before in 2002 on a near-tragic trip in very high waters over there. This trip was much more mellow and we were rewarded with amazing sunrises and sunsets. This is the iconic Casino, which was also the location of the reception. You have NO idea how breathtaking it is inside.
I think the quote of the weekend was the bride saying, “We have an open bar at El Gallon at 8pm and you’re expected to be there and sing karaoke…” Of which I sang Blister in the Sun. Yes there is a video. And no, you can not see.
