La cucina era il cuore di quella grande casa e tutte le altre stanze sembravano invidiarla. La sala da pranzo che si animava solo per Natale e Pasqua, il salotto con i vecchi mobili sempre avvolto dalla solitudine, le enormi camere da letto utilizzate per trascorrere la notte. Riscaldata in inverno dalla stufa a legna, illuminata dal sole che la inondava da mattina a sera, rinfrescata in estate dal venticello che saliva dal fiume, la piccola stanza era circondata da spazi infiniti.
Le due finestre erano i suoi gioielli: due grandi occhi attraverso i quali vegliava sopra i tetti della città. Era sempre accogliente e disponibile anche di prima mattina quando, appena sveglio, insieme ai nonni, Renato e Gerbina, mi godevo uno spettacolo unico. Attraverso i suoi occhi lo sguardo volava su antenne, comignoli, tetti rossi fino a dove il sole sorgeva. Si respirava l'aria fresca del mattino che silenziosamente entrava come a dare nuova vita. La sera poi lo spettacolo si ripeteva quando il tramonto con i suoi colori entrava per annunciare l'ora della cena. La giornata terminava con un un ultimo sguardo al cielo stellato.
Oggi non ci sono più Renato e Gerbina, ma la piccola cucina ancora è lassù, in cima al palazzo vicino al fiume. I suoi occhi vigilano ancora sulla città ed un bambino dai capelli bianchi la conserverà sempre nel suo cuore fra i ricordi più cari.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (Oct. 6, 2014) – Aviation Structural Mechanic 3rd Class Rafael Martinez, from Los Angeles, cleans up hydraulic fluid from a disassembled nose landing gear strut in the aviation hydraulic shop aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). This is the first time the hydraulic shop has worked on a strut from an aircraft in over four years. Theodore Roosevelt is preparing for future deployments.
