Carter's Grove Plantation. The main house was built in 1750-1753 for Carter Burwell, a grandson of Robert ("King") Carter. Probably designed by architect Richard Talieferro. The house was renovated in 1927-1928 and the dependencies connected to it. Colonial Williamsburg owned the mansion from 1969 to 2007 and operated it as a house museum. It was sold to a private owner in 2007.

It was a surprise several years ago to see a road named for Jimmy Carter in highly Republican Knox County even though it's only about 300 yards long. Now the new Western Avenue realignment will probably make it a thing of the past.
I made this plate in 1988. I scanned it into the computer in 2005. It is now digitized, but you can't eat on it in digital form.

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (May 31, 2017) A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter assigned to the Blue Knights of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365 (Reinforced) departs the flight deck aboard the amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50). The ship is part of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region. We spent today out trolling Northwest Illinois trying to find a little color left. We caught a pop of orange sitting at Carter and headed over to check it out. We found this short key train tied down. The leader, BNSF 8535 an EMD SD70Ace had a fellow loco and then 39 cars in tow, clean crude cars, a mid train buffer and the balance were crude residue.
Even though it was for a fleeting 5 seconds or so, it was truly an honor to meet one of the greatest humanitarians that walked this Earth.
They said that he was a little too nice to be the Commander-in-Chief, but, don't you have to be nice to run the country?
Sorry that this photo is a little blurry; I had the PERFECT opportunity too when he turned towards me and smiled at my camera (my camera, can you believe it?) and I proceeded to snap his photo when one of those Secret Service agents bumped right into me, thus resulting this blurry photo. You can imagine the steam coming out of my ears when that happened. I was angry and said bluntly: Thank you very much for ruining my photo. They kept trying to move us along, but I took more photos of the President before I left. In the end, I got a couple of good ones of him signing his book, but alas, this was the only one where he was looking directly at my camera and smiling.
I was there for a book signing, and the funny thing was, Sam's Club offered an already-signed copy of his book. I turned it down only because I want to actually meet him: there's no alternative. I drove 40 miles to meet Jimmy Carter in person, and stood in a long line that stretched to the front of the store, but it was worth it. After all, he won't be around forever. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Carter on center stage in school play called MONSTER MASH. He did so good up there and so did cousin Travis..
F.B. Carter (1797-1871) was born in Halifax Co. VA. and came with the Francis and Sarah Carter family to Williamson County in 1806, settling in Waddell Hollow. F.B. came to Franklin as a young man to make shoes, boots. In1830, he had the Carter House built on Columbia pike south of Franklin, which became the center of the Battle of Franklin on Nov. 30, 1864.
Just as the Confederates breached the Union line, Col. Emerson Opdycke led his reserve brigade on an unauthorized counterattack on the enemy, which staggered the attackers and threw them back across the Carter House property. Bloody hand to hand fighting erupted between the Carter House, the Carter Gin and the Lotz House before the Confederates were driven back. Emptying his revolver at the enemy, General Opdycke would continue fighting with it as a hammer. At the front steps of this building, Union Colonel Arthur MacArthur shot a Confederate colonel, only to be severely wounded himself by a bullet fired by the falling body. After the battle, 57 bodies and 4 horses were removed from the lawn depicted.

Some people tell me I never age...but they never saw me forty years ago. I don't look anything like I did forty years ago...
This was the office for the property of the Carter House. It was separate from the rest of the house, which was not a common practice. You can see the bullet holes on 2 sides of the building, though there is damage on all 4 sides.
The Carter's son, who had not been home in years b/c he was traveling with the army, was surprised that this battle was taking place on his home turf. I can't imagine what it would be like to have this surreal experience in such familiar surroundings. He was mortally wounded, though the family went out searching for him immediately. They brought him home where he died, but of the thousands of soldiers who wanted to see their families one last time before they died he is the only one who's wish came true.
