Here's something I'm almost embarrassed to admit looking into, but I try to be as transparent about my idiocy as possible...for science!
Over the years I've heard people make this claim several times, but recently George Metropoulos did a video where he was all, "Ain't no Les Paul sounds like a vintage Les Paul with Centralab pots! It's more woody-er!" And he proceeded to tear sh*t up with a Les Paul through one of his amazing amps. Which is like Clapton going, "When I was in Cream, my tone was because of my classic Gibson's pots!" And then he wails and you're like, "That sounds amazing!" Yeah, of course it does, but it would probably sound amazing if Clapton was playing a lawsuit Ibanez Les Paul through a Ceriatone Marshall, too.
Ditto for that recent video where Joe Bonamassa was explaining how he gets the sounds of the various British Invasion guys and at one point he holds up his Les Paul and he's all, "A lot of it is these pickups, but I think just as much is what's under here!" And he pointed to the pots.
Both of these guys have spent a lot more time around period-correct vintage instruments than I have. Joe Bonamassa says at one point that you don't have to own a $300,000 Les Paul like his and I'm all, "Wait, what?" Because I sometimes forget that there are people who spend that kind of money on a guitar that had a retail price of $995 in 1959.
SO...me being me, I noticed that some seller on eBay was selling vintage NOS Centralab pots inexpensively and then I noticed that they were screw-adjust pots. So not really any good for guitars, but other than the shafts, they should be exactly the same. So I'm gonna take one apart. It didn't cost me $150 like most vintage Centralab pots do anymore. 'Cause if I paid a fortune for one it would make me queasy to kill it. I mean, honestly...I'm prolly gonna be a little queasy about killing one of these, anyway.
I'm pretty sure I'm just going to find...pot guts. I mean, carbon trace and wiper construction are kind of basic stuff and I've never heard of these guys thinking outside the box about this stuff. But I'm curious. Maybe there's some cheap thing they did that degrades the signal in a way that's notable. Because that's the most likely reason for it to sound any different. Some kind of crappy materials choice that induced capacitance loading or something.

My refurbishment on this Revox A77 Mk1 circa 1969 is now complete. This was the more desirable high speed version (15 & 7.5 IPS). The old Tantalum capacitors replaced with modern electrolytics, old Rifa spark suppressors replaced along with all new trim pots and some high wattage resistors. New brakes and hubs fitted. Still running on the original hub motors and capacitance motor. I’ve treated it to brand new RMG LPR90 tape and performed a full recalibration. I may replace the heads in the future however they still have plenty of life left in them.
The is a capacitor bank (aka capacitor tree) on the Fermi grounds.
Evidently in times gone past, it was used as part of an electrical power system, now no longer used. The physicist I talked to said they kept it around because "It looks cool" - I agree - tjhat's why I took the picture in the first place.
While there is no proof, it has been theorized (by me) that there is an inifinte supply of surplus orange and blue paint, and that Fermi can only get those colors :-)

Oscilloscope screen-shot, displaying the following signals of the 74HC373 (U65) (see probe connections here):
• channel 1 - output enable
• channel 2 - latch enable
• channel 3 - D0 (latch input 1)
• channel 4 - Q0 (latch output 1)
With the oscilloscope probes switched to the 10x setting, the capacitance of the probes no longer interferes with the quality of the measurements. Notice that the edges are much sharper, as they should be, in contrast to what they were with the probes set to 1x.

With an old drafting pencil, piece of conductive foam, and a paperclip I built a very decent stylus for my iPad. It works really well and now sketching feels much more natural.
Entire build time was under 10min and cost $0 (with found parts).

Common among all are the ability to measure voltage, current, circuit impedance and continuity. Common options are probe variations, additional device tests (capacitance and transistor), greater accuracy and ruggedization. The unit above includes a 9 and 1.5 volt battery checker.

Well, to those of you who suggested that I find a faster detector -- Thank you! it turns out that the detector I was using was waaay too slow. I ended up finding a IR detector phototransistor -- this wouldn't actually give a normal signal with a bias voltage, but as an IR photovoltaic cell (generating its own voltage) it worked really well. It had a lot of capacitance, so I bridged it with a 15 ohm resistor to get the reponse time up. Unfortunately I had already modified the high voltage capacitor setup from a 52p 2s to a 26p configuration. The result is a 4 fold decrease in the capacitor count. It seems that these russian 10kV caps have no problems with 18kVDC. So the baseline is ruined, but the results seems to be encouraging. Now I need to get some comparison photos which means I need to fix my IR laser. Yeah, I broke it already (stupid stupid).
Of course... if the sensor is nonlinear enough then these calculations mean absolutely nothing though I can still make some deductions.... onward to more photos!!!

Video High Density (VHD) was an analogue video disc format. It was popular especially in Japan around 1980s. It is very similar to CED (Capacitance Electronic Disk), but unlike CED, the diamond stylus doesn't follow the physical grooves on the disk, but the head is controlled electronically to be able to keep the track.

The tube that runs from the upper-left to the lower-right of this picture is the capacitance fuel probe from Princeton. It runs from close to the lowest point in the fuel tank, near the drain and fuel line inlet, to the highest point in the second bay of the fuel tank. This isn't the highest point in the fuel tank overall because of the dihedral angle, but it's reasonably close.
The drain hole at the low end of the probe is about equal to the top side of the fuel line inlet hole, so when the probe reads "empty" the tank will actually start porting and the engine will lose power. So empty will really mean empty, effectively. The "full" mark will probably be several gallons lower than the capacity of the tank, but that's fine. Having more resolution at the low end of the fuel tank is more useful than having it at the high end.

With a little bit of scrutiny + imagination a mathematical equation is apparent... electrical resistance/capacitance etc., strange quirk of nature or someone deliberately etching the equation onto the pebble?? Ampere X 172 (N/L)
I entered the equation into Google & was stunned when it showed an answer? 172000m-2 kg s-2A
The small pebble was quite impressed as well... LOL!
I should add that there is a large "J" on the top.... J = Joule?

My friend who's a daycare patient at The Norfolk Hospice where I volunteer saw the advertising for iPad and wondered if it would enable him to read books, as he can't turn pages of conventional books or deploy the finger power and precision needed to operate a Sony reader or Kindle. (He has MND / ALS)
With the help of another friend who could bring along his own iPad, we made a test. I made a quick first prototype of a long (chopstick length) conductive stylus to operate the iPad's touch screen, which works on capacitance.
With this silver chopstick, my friend could operate the iPad's book reader - and also the on-screen keyboard. All three of us were delighted about this - now to ask for funding to get an iPad for my friend to use at home, and help us explore just what it can do for him and other folk in a similar position!
(There's a text to speech App and a .pdf reader App, and others which would be a great help/ fun to use too)
Thanks to my friend for letting me photograph this small eureka moment.
Update - funding request is being prepared, and fingers are crossed!
ps: If anyone knows of a commercially-available long (10 inch / 25 cm at least) conductive stylus for iPad, please let me know before I embark on the construction of a more sophisticated prototype!
Update 2: iPad generously funded by the (British) MND (ALS) Association. We're both learning a lot about how to make it as easy to use as possible and which apps are the most helpful and accessible. My friend and I are also having a lot of fun!
We are about to experiment with ways of making the action of the capactive touch screen more responsive to our stylus. We'll blog or publish more detail soon, and will make all our experiences and findings available to the MND (ALS) Association.
