After putting together another flash head using the new yellow capacitor I decided to try and measure the flash duration.
I was kind of surprised at how good it was. I was expecting much slower as the capacitance is 0.5uF vs the Maxwells 0.03uF.
500nS at FWHM ( half power points) or about 750nS at 1/3 power.*
Pretty good. A few pellet photos showed minimal blur.

This is the innards of a Diesel Audio "NS-2.2" car audio capacitor.
The big metal can is what you see on the outside, the far smaller toilet paper roll thing is the actual capacitor. The rest of the can is mostly empty space aside from a few inches of black epoxy at the bottom to give it some artificial weight.
I did a very rough capacitance test by measuring the discharge time through a 12-ohm 10-watt resistor - I get an RC constant of about 2.5, which works out to an actual capacitance of around 0.21 farads instead of the 2.2 advertised.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of 2 identical microwave capacitors showing the underside of the lid of the one on the right. This is where the bleeder resistor is usually found. You can see I'm holding back a piece of insulating material with my thumb. Anything between the two terminals here is most likely going to be the bleeder resistor. (This one has already been removed.) It may not look like any resistor you've seen before.
These are going to be special high voltage resistors rated for at least 10kV. The ones Samsung was using in this particular model consist of a rectangle of white porcelain with a carbon film applied on one side and a green insulating layer painted over it. On either end are the solder pads which connect to the carbon film. It's pretty easy to remove, I just ripped it out with a pair of pliers being careful not to damage it. It will be useful later.
Moving down we have a pair of foil wires going down into the oil where the capacitor actually is. It's a good idea to leave these units submerged in the oil since they're higher voltage and the oil helps prevent arcing. I wasn't able to take a picture of the capacitor itself. Samsung glued or pressed it down in there and I couldn't pull it out by the wires. The top which I was able to see is drab and wouldn't come out well in a picture. What it looks like is just a roll of that brown insulating material in the same shape as the can. There are probably layers of foil rolled in there with it.
On a side note, the oil was quite stinky and reminded me of mosquito repellent. It was fairly thin almost like light machine oil.

Even though the space between the plates of a capacitor is empty, current flows through the capacitor when the voltage across the plates is changing. That current is equal to the capacitance times the time rate of change of the voltage.

THE SUPERHILAC IS A LINEAR ACCELERATOR USED FOR LOW ENERGY NUCLEAR SCIENCE RESEARCH AND USED AS THE INJECTOR FOR BEVELAC. BEAMS OF TWO DIFFERENT IONS CAN BE PRODUCED ON ALTERNATE PULSES AND DELIVERED TO ONE OR TWO SUPERHILAC EXPERIMENTERS AND TO BEVELAC. FIVE MAJOR BEAM LINES, WITH 13 TARGET AREAS DESIGNED FOR VARIOUS STUDIES, ARE CURRENTLY IN OPERATION AT THE SUPERHILAC. AT THE BEVATRON, RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED IN MEDIUM TO HIGH ENERGY HEAVY ION NUCLEAR PHYSICS, PLUS CLINICAL TRIALS FOR HEAVY ION RADIOTHERAPY. The 410C voltmeter I acquired last week didn't come with the 11036A AC voltage probe, so I decided to build my own as the manual nicely documented the schematics and specs and I had the right parts in my spare stores to build it. This one is solid state though and has a broader bandwidth that extends up to 1.2 GHz, where the original was spec'ed to top out at 700 MHz. Only major difference is that the old school germanium diode that I selected for this project can't withstand the 300+ volt signals the vacuum tube diode could. It can only take approx. 3 volts safely.
I repurposed all the circuitry components from other hp gear but the case and connectors are all mil. spec Amphenol. The detachable ground strap uses a Mueller alligator clip assembly and the cable is of the "extra limp" variety with excellent shielding and low capacitance. It's the only Japanese part in the unit as it came from a TEAC video cable I no longer needed.
The nameplate label was created in Photoshop and printed out on a two sided thin layer tape and applied to the circuit box.
Best of all, the unit works like a charm and I actually think its far more functional than the original because of the BNC output, so I can connect it to my signal generators with ease.
I have been recently obsessed with magnetic loop antennas, and this is one element of such a radiator. I smoothed the aluminum out today. Just pieced together, but not set up to test capacitance. The diameter is 5" on the rotors. The shaft is 3/8" brass rod with stainless nuts. I chose the spacing of two nuts just randomly. I may have to reduce that and will certainly have to fine tune the spacing of the stator elements. The other brass rod is #10X32. The threads don't need to be fine--it takes too long to put on the nuts! The plexiglass was 3$ at AxMan Surplus here in St. Paul. The model is Oscar!

Just checking which parts of the crossover like the capacitors and/or resistors can be upgraded to Mundorf or Black Gate caps perhaps.
It has Elytone Brand radial electrolytic capacitor (blue cap) at 10mu 63V capacitance.
The M72 sounds ok to me as it is, just exploring if i can extract more juice from it.:)
Q: What is a theremin?
The theremin is an electronic musical instrument that is played without being touched. It most often takes the form of a box (wooden is most common) with 1 or 2 metal antennas protruding from it. By waving your hands near the antennas, you can control pitch and volume.
Q: How does a theremin work?
The theremin works on the principles of heterodyning and capacitance. When you wave your hands near the antenna, you form a capacitor between your hand and the antenna. A capacitor's properties vary by distance between its two "plates" and by the material between them (in this case, air). The hand/antenna capacitor is part of a circuit known as an oscillator. The output from this oscillator is mixed with the output from a fixed oscillator (one that does not vary), and the difference between the two is extracted. For the volume circuit, this signal is converted to control the loudness of the instrument, and for the pitch circuit, the signal is amplified into the tone you hear.
Q: When was the theremin invented?
The theremin was invented around 1919 by Professor Lev Sergeyvich Termen (whose name was later anglicized to Leon Theremin). It is believed to be one of the very first electronic musical instruments.
