The arrival of a Border Terrier and his "butler" prompts an immediate relocation. No drama, just somewhere far enough away until the darned fool goes home again...

The shot I always wanted, in celebration of Freddie’s 5th birthday. Strictly speaking that’s on November 15th but having captured this yesterday I was impatient to share it with his fans. He won’t mind, every day is a Freddie day!

And fellow photographers and dog owners know that (in theory) it’s an easy enough shot to attempt. He frequently displays superb athleticism. Except he won’t always do it on demand or his photographer can’t always keep up, or is in the wrong position with the wrong camera settings… Here I had for once anticipated his movements correctly and was conveniently placed with the camera set and a bag of treats in my lens hand. And so it was done. Thanks Fred, happy birthday. I love you my boy !

Photography Note

(Skip this part if you want!)

Shutter Priority mode at 1/1250s (on a 200mm lens) is in the right ballpark for sharpness on a fast moving subject. With the good light that morning I think I could have gone faster and kept the ISO at sensible levels, or boosted the EV. I've had a good look at this in Affinity Photo. The exposure is shown here SOOC but has been slightly cropped at 3:2. Any more and I fear losing resolution. But I also want the “context” of that vehicle barrier hence why I pulled back the zoom. So here it is for now. I’ll gratefully accept any feedback offered and we’ll go again sometime.

Right after Christmas I flew down to the Tampa area of Florida for a wedding. As soon as I got dropped off at my hotel, I heard an osprey, and I knew it was going to be a good trip...

SOOC shot, no crop

Bowers Marsh Nature Reserve, Essex UK

An experiment in a tabletop image with the longer lens on the tripod and a recently purchased (non-OEM) tripod collar. I noticed some movement if I wasn’t careful so probably could have saved myself £20 (and forget Canon’s at £150)! So whilst I think there’s some possibilities here I think in future I’ll stick with the trusty 50mm for Still Life, or with this lens just bolt the camera body to the tripod like normal. But it’s informative, and it’s been a while since I messed around in Studio One.

7:5 crop and some tidying up in Affinity Photo. Does anybody else get black dog hairs on their subjects…? 😁

Not a true 1:1 Macro as practiced by experts in that field, but a single image which I have manipulated a wee bit. An experiment with a 200mm zoom (handheld) and dialling down the flash power. But food for thought methinks…

This is the turning circle for the miniature railway at Wat Tyler Country Park, Essex UK. It’s been out of operation since before Covid but I saw some volunteers today making efforts to clear the line. So maybe, with a bit of love (and a good dollop of grease) this will see tourists again.

Incidentally, this line was once used to carry explosives from the nearby wharf to the munitions factory that existed on this site during WW1.
