Probably. As far as I can tell…his nobbly bit being evidently larger than his mate. She declined the photo opportunity…

Across the Creek

The narrow Leigh Creek and salt marsh separate the island from the mainland before running out to the Thames. So here’s a view of the island in low lying mist. All is peaceful this Christmas Eve morning.

Hastily shot as I was packing the camera away, I didn't even have time to set "Servo Focus" but tried to pan the shot. So although I managed to sharpen it a touch it won't win awards. I do like the fact I was elevated above the lake so got this view. We have to try new things occasionally...

Lessons learned:

(1) pack the camera away IN THE CAR, not before;

(2) anticipate their movements.

A final look for now at Freddie and his young pal Gus. Here they go charging off into the distance, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The fields have been so wet here you can just see water droplets spraying out behind them. We had attempted to corral them for a still portrait but that went as well as could be expected…

We did in fact cover a few miles of it before breakfast, then headed back to our rented cottage. Bracing…!

Cruise ship MS Hamburg on a 5 day trip from Hamburg, Germany to Greenwich, London then back again.

A return to grey and bleak, well maybe. And that navigation pole is slightly irritating isn't it? I can't help being drawn to it every time I come down this way. It reflects the mood of this scene.

I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a humble photographer to enter the kingdom of Flickr’s Explore…

Although I’ve no complaints really. The magic donkey appears to have liked my derelict old factory from yesterday. Maybe I should get into real estate, or a bit of “reportage”…. But weird stuff like this is what appeals to me most.

Three steps.

Two dogs who make dog walking a combat sport. But as we head back to the cars it's clear they have had a great time and some refreshment will be shared. Two great mates enjoying each other's company.

As a link between the distant past and the present, Cochem Castle represents a landmark of the city and of the region. Around the castle yard stand defence turrets which tower overhead, suggesting through their form a direct line to the omnipotence of God. Sitting on one of the mighty walls and looking down to the romantic Moselle valley you may easily fall in love with this place. On the right, you see the part of town "Sehl" that is overlooked by the high clock tower of the monastery Ebernach. On the other side are the mighty rocks of "Brauselay", which is also said to be the "Loreley of the Moselle". You might ask yourself whether the pretty, blond haired Virgin was once sitting along the Rhine River or here ...

Quote from rspb.org.uk: “sociable, quarrelsome, noisy, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food.” Which seems rather harsh when compared with some of the human element around here…

Oh to have wings. A juvenile gull heads out across the River Thames, Canvey Island, Essex UK.

A shot from a couple of days ago which I was considering for sharpness and clarity. Lessons learned from Flickr friends: 1/500s, ISO 100 probably isn’t fast enough but I like the light and empty space. I’m also breaking a composition “rule” by placing the subject in the centre but I hereby pass this picture for public consumption. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, you might say.

A fishing trawler (also called a dragger) is a commercial fishing vessel designed to operate fishing trawls. Trawling is a method of fishing that involves actively dragging or pulling a trawl through the water behind one or more trawlers. Trawls are fishing nets that are pulled along the bottom of the sea or in midwater at a specified depth. A trawler may also operate two or more trawl nets simultaneously (double-rig and multi-rig).

Or perhaps not. I'll confess I derive a great deal of amusement from watching my four legged companion, utterly stymied by the cattle grid, giving it a "look" then peeing on it before we continue along the track this side of the fence.

Small furry creatures beware…

Freddie hasn’t been published on Flickr since he last made Explore at Christmas. He was insufferable for days after so we had a little chat about humility…

Katz Castle (German: Burg Katz) is a castle above the German town of St. Goarshausen in Rhineland-Palatinate. This magnificent castle stands on a ledge looking downstream from the riverside at St. Goar. It was first built around 1371 by Count William II of Katzenelnbogen. The castle was bombarded in 1806 by Napoleon and rebuilt in the late 19th century, between 1896-98. It is now privately owned, and not open for visitors.

Coryton from across the Holehaven Creek, Canvey Island, Essex UK.

We regularly see local news articles with development proposals for the former oil refinery site, even a road bridge is mooted from here on Canvey Island. You can’t fight “progress”, a little over a century ago this was just marsh and farmland. But I wonder if this image (and many others like it) will be possible in 10 years time…

Because it never stops. Well, maybe a tea break now and then...

Hunters? Well, maybe. An imagined scene from a wildlife documentary of the African plains, the hunter goes in for the "kill" whilst his pal keeps a watchful eye out for scavengers.

The reality....Freddie finds a discarded plastic bottle half buried in the creek and claims it as his own. They both spend over half an hour playing tug o’ war with it until I can wrestle it off them to dispose of it responsibly. But the instincts are switched on which amuses me greatly.
