Was a great weekend last weekend out in Chiba camping with my brother and his family. Very cool in the evening too which is most unusual for this time of year (then again, its been a cool Summer).

5xp HDR rendered photo taken handheld at dusk as my bro (on the left), and us (on the right) prepare Dinner.

Chiba, Japan.

We were the only ones there. Cut me some slack.

Camp Bison II Burwash Industrial Farm || Burwash Correctional Centre

The community was built to house the staff working at the Burwash Industrial Farm (also referred to as the Burwash Correctional Centre), a provincial jail that housed anywhere from 180 to 820 inmates during its history. The prison opened in 1914 and shuttered in 1975, after it was deemed to be too costly to run despite it being a self-sufficient institution.

Prior to the construction of Highway 69, Burwash was an isolated location in the Wanapitei River valley, accessible only from a nearby station on the Canadian Northern Railway (today's Canadian National Railway). At its peak, the correctional facility owned 35,000 acres (14,164 ha) and leased an additional 100,000 acres (40,469 ha) of land, and was the fourth-largest employer in the Sudbury area. Following the construction of Highway 69, the facility became less isolated and signs were posted on the highway advising motorists not to pick up hitchhikers in the area due to the possibility of convict escapes.

Because the prison's geographic isolation meant that employees could not simply commute from Sudbury or Killarney on a daily basis, a townsite was required for the guards and support staff that worked at the prison farm and the community, built by inmate labor, housed anywhere up to about 1,000 residents. It boasted a public school, which went from kindergarten through grade 10 at one point, a church, a post office, a barber shop, a tailor shop, and a shoe repair shop. There was also a grocery store that sold bread made by the inmates, meat from the farm, and vegetables produced by the inmates, as well as other grocery items that were brought in from Sudbury. Milk was delivered to the door by horse and wagon and the garbage was picked up by a different horse and wagon. There was a complete working sawmill, which milled the trees cut down by inmates. The village was built from lumber and all of the provincial parks were provided with picnic tables made there as well. Burwash was considered to be almost self-sufficient, with the inmates working at various trades and receiving an education.

One of the few successful escapes from the prison took place on May 17, 1966, when convicted murderer Wayne Ford and two other prisoners escaped into the bush, walking for 16 miles before stealing a car and making it to Toronto. All three were eventually recaptured and transferred to maximum security institutions.

Novia del campo, amapola

que estás abierta en el trigo;

amapolita, amapola

¿te quieres casar conmigo?

Te daré toda mi alma,

tendrás agua y tendrás pan.

Te daré toda mi alma,

toda mi alma de galán.

Tendrás una casa pobre,

yo te querré como un niño,

tendrás una casa pobre

llena de sol y cariño.

Yo te labraré tu campo,

tú irás por agua a la fuente,

yo te regaré tu campo

con el sudor de mi frente.

Amapola del camino,

roja como un corazón,

yo te haré cantar, y al son

de la rueda del molino.

Yo te haré cantar, y al son

de la rueda dolorida,

te abriré mi corazón,

amapola de mi vida.

Novia del campo, amapola,

que estás abierta en el trigo:

amapolita, amapola,

¿te quieres casar conmigo?

Camping by a lake, I got up early and took this 5-shot HDR image. What a beautiful, clear morning.

My daughter and I had a short camping trip over Memorial Day Weekend, wanted to see the "new" meteor shower, which turned out to be a bust, but we had a great time anyway, lots o' birds. :)

DWD Triathlon Club Camp at Fusan

The clouding seems to be changing continuously and is confused in this Meeker series. Earlier, we scooted over to Camp St.Malo, the church camp of great recent consequence where we gathered snaps, my last post. I chatted with a Lookie-Louise from Texas then we turned south from Camp St.Malo to the Meeker Park Overflow Campground along Colorado's Peak-to-Peak Highway #7 and #72. eDDie was chasing wildflowers in a meadow above the last camp site west. It took me a while to gather my gear and take some snaps from the campground after eDDie got out of my shot, disappearing up the trail. I got the shots that I already lined up.

Four-by-fours can't drive any further but who knows how many tried. I see macho 4X4s all the time. Many are fools at best. I will have to call on my "Monkey Wrench Gang" stealth techniques. Some of the equipment piles at the campground sites bring pause! The park boundary must be along here somewhere. This is where the campground loop, bottom frame, ends and car window gawkers get their last glimpse of the peak... and to think that most of them can walk and could vastly improve their health. I can see a foot trail heading beyond the barrier, frame lower-right. I wonder how many brought their media viewers for an evening of boredom while camping. Oh the heartbreak of boredom in the wilds!

I concentrated on shots toward the broad face of Meeker. There was no sign of the fluffy clouds rolling across the peak earlier. Could the clouds still swoop down from the divide? From the campground view, it appears that they continue to build behind the divide so we may get more in-coming cloud scenes. Now that eDDie has disappeared, I wonder where he was headed. I'll head up the trail. Oh well, I can't possibly get lost, not here. I can hear traffic behind me on the highway and there is a pretty good landmark ahead directly west. If I get off track, I can always make my way to the highway and then backtrack to the camp. I must have magnetic particles in my head. Trekking off into the hills never gave me pause in my entire life. There are only two headings, in and out.

Camp site at Vestvannet in Sarpsborg, Norway.

I borrowed a HUGE stack of old slides from my mom this weekend, and have decided to start scanning with our 1976 trip to western Canada -- a research trip for my biologist dad, but also with family in tow -- i was nine, my sister almost 12.

this camp is the farthest north i have ever been, at a place called Macmillan Pass, in the MacKensie Range near the boundary between the Yukon and Northwestern Territories, along the Canol Road and at roughly 64°N latitude. I'd like to go this far north (and farther!) again someday...

although note the screens up around our old canvas tent -- this place had the most mosquitoes i have EVER seen, like dense fog. while Dad was pitching the tent, he installed my sister and i next to him with camp pillows, to swat the insects away as much as we could. it was a hopeless task -- they were truly insane. once the tent was up & screens installed, we were sent inside to squash every mosquito we could find.

Been a few months since I got the camera out. We went camping as part of our Tet holiday and flowers motivated me to shoot again. Just loaded the card so I haven't really gone thru them yet but, I thought I would post something more to come.
