At about 0330 I realize that I have made a mistake in my calculations. I have made the Pillar about 30-studs too wide, and then spend the next two hours trying to decide if I should leave it and plow forward, or if I should correct it. I already know what I am going to do, but am desperately looking for a reason to not rebuild it.

Have an online chat with Kelso – he suggest what I already know: if you can live with it and the error is small, then leave it. If you can’t live with it or the error is too large, then change it – I go back, do the math again, and start to make the changes.

After pondering this for 24-hours, I give Phipson crap and tell him to let me know when he thinks something is wrong. We kiss and make up, and he promises I can sleep with his wife – all is good.

 

Figure out more of the angles, and get the spacing between the top and bottom half correct. Still can’t get the indented side piece attached correctly.

Manage to get the indented side panel to lock in securely. Several more orders to Bricklink to get the extra/different parts I now need to account for the change in design.

 

Flirt with Stacy, Heather, Mark, Chris, Dave1, Dave2, Dave3, Dennis, and Alex online (mostly just with Heather and Stacy).

 

Goal date for completion: May 2010 to be ready for Brickworld 2010, which was completely missed due to lack of time to build. Decided to work and go on vacations instead. Niggled a bit with it, made the changes necessary; however, I mostly focused on the army build – 6,200 figs this year.

Back from BW 2010. House getting back in order from builds that were constructed for same. Start to clean out the garage to actually make it a useful space. About $10k in orders placed for my BW 2011 build – already being designed.

 

July and early August 2010

Finds me working both at work and in the garage. My Lego room is currently filled to capacity with orders and sets that have not been put away. Plan is to move the Pillar on to my reloading bench in the garage – shooting will have to be set aside for now.

Move the section (section four) into the garage, and while listening to audio books, work my bottom off. Coming up a year later and my SHIP is back to where I started. But now I can move on.

The kit and its assembly:

This is a what-if model, but, as usual, it is rooted in reality – to be precise in the German late-war plans to mate the Ta 152(H) with the mighty Jumo 222 engine. I do not know what the official service designation would have been, but this combo would have resulted in a powerful fighter – AFAIK, German engineers’ calculations indicated a performance that would have been comparable with the post-WWII F4U-5!

 

Creating a model of such this paper aircraft called for some serious conversion work and ended almost in a kitbashing. The starting point became a (cheap) Mistercraft Fw 190D-9 kit, and I originally planned this model to be a Fw 190 variant, but eventually this turned into a Ta 152, since it would better match up with the late war time frame.

The Mastercraft/Mistercraft kit appears to be an indigenous mold and not a re-issue of a vintage kit. At first glance the parts look pretty crisp, but the kit has some serious fit and flash issues. Another selling point is the detailed decal set, which comes in three sheets and encompasses a lot of stencils – even though the instructions where to place them are not consistent, and there are even 1:48 scale(!) markings included. But that’s a Mastercraft/Mistercraft standard, anyway…

 

Well, the basis was sound and the kit would, in any event, be thoroughly modified. From the OOB kit, fuselage, wings and stabilizers were taken, as well as the landing gear and some other bits.

 

The wings were extended, in order to keep overall proportions with the new, much more massive engine cowling balanced (see below). Not an easy stunt, but I was lucky to have recently bought a set of resin Doppelreiter tanks from Airmodel which were just perfect to cover the cuts and seams on the upper wing surfaces. Inside of the wings, a styrene strip secured stability while the lower wing surface was sculpted with putty and the trailing edge of the outer wing panels was cut down by 1 mm, so that the wings’ outlines match again. Some further PSR work was necessary to blend the slipper tanks into the wings, forming the upper side of the modifications, but in the end the whole thing looks quite good.

 

The fuselage lost both its original engine and the tail. The latter is a donor part from a Frog Ta 152H (Revell re-boxing), but mating it with the Mistercraft Fw 190D was not easy because the fuselage shapes of the two kits are totally different! I also used the Mistercraft stabilizers because they were markedly bigger than the same parts from the Ta 152 kit!

 

The Jumo 222 front end was simulated with parts from the spares box, and it is a bit exaggerated. Actually, the Jumo 222 was hardly bigger (in both length and diameter) than the Fw 190D’s Jumo 213 V12 engine! The cowling and the radiator for my conversion came from a Frog He 219 engine nacelle (Revell re-boxing, too) which is utterly dubious. The nacelle parts were turned upside down and integrated into the slender Fw 190 front fuselage with several layers of putty.

Inside of the cowling, a radiator plate from an Italeri Fw 190D was mounted, together with a styrene tube adapter for the new propeller. The latter was scratched, using a drop tank as spinner and single propeller blades from the Mistercraft Fw 190D, plus one donor blade from the Frog Ta 152H kit, which had to be trimmed in order to match the other blades. But with some paint, no one will tell the small differences…

 

Once the bigger engine was integrated into the fuselage, the exhaust system had to be added. In real life, the Jumo 222 would have featured three clusters with two rows of four exhaust stubs, distributed evenly around the cowling. Using a drawing of this arrangement as benchmark, I started with square cuts for the cluster openings. From the back side, styrene sheet closed the gaps and offered a basis for the exhaust stubs. These were improvised with H0 scale roofing shingles – each of the 24 exhaust stubs was cut individually into shape and size and then glued into the respective openings on the upper flanks and under the engine. Finally, styrene sheet was used to create small spoilers and heat shields. The result is certainly not perfect, but comes close to what the real world arrangement would basically have looked like. In a final step, two air intakes for the two-stage supercharger, scratched from sprue material, were added to the flanks.

 

The cockpit remained OOB, simple as it is, as well as the landing gear, but the canopy was modified in order to allow a presentation in open position. This meant that the OOB canopy had to be cut in two parts and that the model’s spine had to be cut away, making place for a donor canopy (the late, bulged variant, IIRC from an Italeri Fw 190D-9). Internally the fuselage gap was filled with putty and the headrest had to be modified, too, but the conversion turned out to look better than expected.

 

As a small cosmetic improvement, the molded gun barrel stumps in the wing roots were replaced with hollow steel needles, and the outer guns were completely removed.

I made a calculation for a wooden Christmas tree... all you need is 3 pieces of wood 250 x 19,5 x 3 cm and a circular saw....! And ofcourse some screws and and iron L-shape, to attach the stem to the horizontal floor-holder!

While working with drawing crease patterns on square grids, it's useful to know what slopes can be used in combinations to lie flat. For example, if you have 3 of the 4 necessary creases that meet at an intersection, the 4th one MUST be at a forced angle, but sometimes determining that angle would not be so easy.

 

These are some sample slope "calculations" that I have used in the past and find quite useful in combination with Kawasaki's Theorem.

 

In all 4 diagrams, the 90 degrees in the lower left corner is broken up into 3 angle-segments. The "equations" below are all shown in the form that the lowest segment plus the middle segment equals their sum.

 

Top Left: 1/3 + 1/2 = 1

Left Middle: 1/2 + 1/2 = 4/3

Top Right: 1/3 + 1/3 = 3/4

Bottom: 1/3 + 1/7 = 1/2

 

The first slope in each equation is straight forward, as it's just the slope of the lower line from the lower left corner.

The third slope (to the right of the equals sign) is also straight forward, as it's just the slope of the upper line from the lower left corner.

The 2nd slope is the only tricky one. Each diagram has a right triangle shown, with the right-angle marked. The proportion of the lengths of the two legs of right triangle (the edges joining at the right angle) gives us the 2nd slope.

 

Let me know if it isn't quite clear enough what I mean here and I will try to clarify as needed.

 

Note: One interesting thing is that all of the angle bisectors of a 3-4-5 triangle will intersect at a point on the grid. This has been used in the past for a few representational models. I believe Satoshi's Dragonfly is one example.

Electric cars are cheaper than their reputation. In the calculation model, the experts calculated and compared the total costs of three mid-range cars with electric drive, petrol and diesel engines. The result: the electric car is the cheapest of all three in the purchase year 2020. Scientists used quantum chemical calculations and computer simulations to model how a platinum catalyst interacts with water. (Catalysts are important in nearly everything we manufacture today). The oxygen atoms, in water, are depicted in red; the hydrogen molecules are white, and platinum atoms are in blue-gray. High-level details of the structure can be seen in the reflections of each atom surface.

The ice-like hexagonal structure of water molecules interacting with and above a model platinum catalyst surface is determined from quantum chemical calculations. This is a photograph from the 4th and final round of the 2015 Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 27th May 2015 at 20:00. The weather was perfect for running and racing again and gave bright sunshine with some breeze. The weather conditions were favourable for runners this evening. As this was the final night of a very successful league there were many category prizes up for grabs with runners having to ensure they ran their races to gain the required finish times for the overall calculations. There was a great atmosphere at the finish as spectators cheered on the runners. This year's 5KM is ran on a modified route based on the route from the last couple of years. The final 1KM is within the Belvedere Gardens bringing runners down to the lakeside for a second time and finishing along the aptly named Stream Of Life. The route modification means that the race offers a slightly faster route than the hill finish of previous years. In the prize giving and awards in Belvedere House Cafe there were refreshments served for runners and this brought the curtain down on the Road League for 2015.

The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Runners can also choose to just run one race without being considered for the overall league placings. Over 330 people took part in tonight's event bring the total from the four nights to so far to well over 1,400 runners. As with all of the previous weeks the new finish area provided a nice space for runners to stay around and chat in the evening sunshine. The Mullingar Road League 2015 is now over but has continued successfully and looks to add to the success in the history of this great series. Despite the bright evenings the photographic conditions in Belevedere are difficult so this photograph is part of a smaller than usual photograph set as there were many blurred photographs this evening.

The "Road League" is something of a misnomer but is an indication of the League's origins on the roads around Ladestown Mullingar prior to it's move into Belvedere in 2008. The Road League is the envy of many other races in the country as the Belvedere locations offers a completely traffic free 5KM route.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

     ►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

A few calculations reveal that each day of my life I walk a minimum 2.5 Miles. some days I walk a lot more. That means that in my whole life, I have walked approximately 54,750 Miles. That's twice around the World! I have worn out about 10 pairs of boots, here's the last pair to cave in. Top quality one-piece leather, now completely knackered, but very comfy, in fact good old friends!

The kit and its assembly:

This is a what-if model, but, as usual, it is rooted in reality – to be precise in the German late-war plans to mate the Ta 152(H) with the mighty Jumo 222 engine. I do not know what the official service designation would have been, but this combo would have resulted in a powerful fighter – AFAIK, German engineers’ calculations indicated a performance that would have been comparable with the post-WWII F4U-5!

 

Creating a model of such this paper aircraft called for some serious conversion work and ended almost in a kitbashing. The starting point became a (cheap) Mistercraft Fw 190D-9 kit, and I originally planned this model to be a Fw 190 variant, but eventually this turned into a Ta 152, since it would better match up with the late war time frame.

The Mastercraft/Mistercraft kit appears to be an indigenous mold and not a re-issue of a vintage kit. At first glance the parts look pretty crisp, but the kit has some serious fit and flash issues. Another selling point is the detailed decal set, which comes in three sheets and encompasses a lot of stencils – even though the instructions where to place them are not consistent, and there are even 1:48 scale(!) markings included. But that’s a Mastercraft/Mistercraft standard, anyway…

 

Well, the basis was sound and the kit would, in any event, be thoroughly modified. From the OOB kit, fuselage, wings and stabilizers were taken, as well as the landing gear and some other bits.

 

The wings were extended, in order to keep overall proportions with the new, much more massive engine cowling balanced (see below). Not an easy stunt, but I was lucky to have recently bought a set of resin Doppelreiter tanks from Airmodel which were just perfect to cover the cuts and seams on the upper wing surfaces. Inside of the wings, a styrene strip secured stability while the lower wing surface was sculpted with putty and the trailing edge of the outer wing panels was cut down by 1 mm, so that the wings’ outlines match again. Some further PSR work was necessary to blend the slipper tanks into the wings, forming the upper side of the modifications, but in the end the whole thing looks quite good.

 

The fuselage lost both its original engine and the tail. The latter is a donor part from a Frog Ta 152H (Revell re-boxing), but mating it with the Mistercraft Fw 190D was not easy because the fuselage shapes of the two kits are totally different! I also used the Mistercraft stabilizers because they were markedly bigger than the same parts from the Ta 152 kit!

 

The Jumo 222 front end was simulated with parts from the spares box, and it is a bit exaggerated. Actually, the Jumo 222 was hardly bigger (in both length and diameter) than the Fw 190D’s Jumo 213 V12 engine! The cowling and the radiator for my conversion came from a Frog He 219 engine nacelle (Revell re-boxing, too) which is utterly dubious. The nacelle parts were turned upside down and integrated into the slender Fw 190 front fuselage with several layers of putty.

Inside of the cowling, a radiator plate from an Italeri Fw 190D was mounted, together with a styrene tube adapter for the new propeller. The latter was scratched, using a drop tank as spinner and single propeller blades from the Mistercraft Fw 190D, plus one donor blade from the Frog Ta 152H kit, which had to be trimmed in order to match the other blades. But with some paint, no one will tell the small differences…

 

Once the bigger engine was integrated into the fuselage, the exhaust system had to be added. In real life, the Jumo 222 would have featured three clusters with two rows of four exhaust stubs, distributed evenly around the cowling. Using a drawing of this arrangement as benchmark, I started with square cuts for the cluster openings. From the back side, styrene sheet closed the gaps and offered a basis for the exhaust stubs. These were improvised with H0 scale roofing shingles – each of the 24 exhaust stubs was cut individually into shape and size and then glued into the respective openings on the upper flanks and under the engine. Finally, styrene sheet was used to create small spoilers and heat shields. The result is certainly not perfect, but comes close to what the real world arrangement would basically have looked like. In a final step, two air intakes for the two-stage supercharger, scratched from sprue material, were added to the flanks.

 

The cockpit remained OOB, simple as it is, as well as the landing gear, but the canopy was modified in order to allow a presentation in open position. This meant that the OOB canopy had to be cut in two parts and that the model’s spine had to be cut away, making place for a donor canopy (the late, bulged variant, IIRC from an Italeri Fw 190D-9). Internally the fuselage gap was filled with putty and the headrest had to be modified, too, but the conversion turned out to look better than expected.

 

As a small cosmetic improvement, the molded gun barrel stumps in the wing roots were replaced with hollow steel needles, and the outer guns were completely removed.

PL’AI is the latest in a series of artworks that dwell on the recent transformation in computer science that has shifted from calculation towards adaptive practices of learning from data, and its far reaching effects. In the PLANT MACHINE PROJECT the focus on plants as living agents exposed to the machinic gaze harkens to the use of automation in industrial farming, yet subverts the epistemic framework of science and engineering by making the constructions strive for plant pleasure, representation, and play. The impetus to observe plants and artificial intelligence at play stems from Huizinga’s writing on the ontological implication of play. He sees play as prior to culture and yet not defined by biological necessity, a capacity all creatures possess. In "PL’AI" we explore possibilities of play between cucumber plants and the naïve AI robot moving at their pace.

 

The robot approaches the plants with 36 individually controlled wires suspended from above, moving at the rate of 1cm/h. The robot senses the cucumbers with a laser scanner and feeds the images through a neural network, which in turn decides how to approach the plants by moving the colored balls. Through time the algorithmic “imagination” of cucumbers is modified via feedback from the cucumber tendrils while gradually transforming the robot-tendrils into a cucumber trellis that supports their growth.

 

The play between the cucumber and robot leaves morphological traces in the shape of the plants, the steel strings, and the neural network. We encounter the opening up of another temporality, neither that of a plant nor of a machine alone, already mutated by their needs and desires, and by our own implication in the possibility of their joy.

Crematorium I operated at Auschwitz from August 15, 1940 until July 1943. According to calculations by the German authorities, 340 corpses could be burned every 24 hours after the installation of the three furnaces.

 

The largest room in this building was designated as a morgue. It was adapted as the first provisional gas chamber in the autumn of 1941. The SS used Zyklon B to kill thousands of Jews upon arrival, as well as several groups of Soviet prisoners of war.

 

Prisoners selected in the hospital as unlikely to recover their health quickly were also killed in the gas chamber. Poles sentenced to death by the German summary court.

 

After the establishment in Auschwitz II-Birkenau of two more provisional gas chambers, Bunkers No. 1 and 2 (the so-called "little red house" and "little white house"), the camp authorities shifted the mass murder of the Jews there and gradually stopped using the first gas chamber.

 

After the completion of four crematoria with gas chambers in Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the burning of corpses in Crematorium I was halted. The building was used for storage, and then designated as an SS air-raid shelter. The furnaces, chimney, and some of the walls were demolished, and the openings in the roof through which the SS poured Zyklon B were plastered.

 

After the war, the Museum carried out a partial reconstruction. The chimney and two incinerators were rebuilt using original components, as were and several of the openings in the gas chamber roof [jewishvirtuallibrary.org]

Saudi prince seeks Mideast leadership, independence with Xi's visit

 

RIYADH (Reuters) -Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman hosts China's leader this week at a delicate moment in U.S.-Saudi ties, signalling Riyadh's resolve to navigate a polarised global order regardless of the wishes of its Western allies, analysts said.

 

The ruler of the oil giant has made a comeback on the world stage following the 2018 murder of Jamal Khashoggi, which cast a pall over Saudi-U.S. ties, and has been defiant in the face of U.S. ire over the kingdom's energy policy and pressure from Washington to help isolate Russia.

 

In a show of strength as an aspiring leader of the Arab world, Prince Mohammed will also gather rulers from across the Middle East and North Africa for a Chinese-Arab summit during the visit by President Xi Jinping expected to start on Tuesday.

 

"Riyadh is working according to strategic calculations that it must accommodate Beijing, as it is now an indispensable economic partner," said Ayham Kamel, head of Middle East and North Africa at Eurasia Group.

 

Though the United States remains partner of choice for Gulf states reliant on it for their security, Riyadh is charting a foreign policy that serves its national economic transformation as the world pivots away from hydrocarbons, Saudi's lifeblood, the analysts said.

 

"There is certainly a risk that expanding relations with China backfires and lead to a (further) split in the U.S.-Saudi relationship... but MBS is certainly not pursuing this out of spite," Kamel said.

 

Xi's visit comes at a time when U.S.-Saudi ties are at a nadir, uncertainty weighs on global energy markets with the West imposing a price cap on Russian oil and as Washington warily eyes China's growing influence in the Middle East.

 

The Saudi government did not respond to requests for comment on Xi's visit and its agenda.

 

In a sign of irritation with U.S. criticism of Riyadh's human rights record, Prince Mohammed told The Atlantic magazine in March that he did not care whether U.S. President Joe Biden misunderstood things about him, saying Biden should be focusing on America's interests.

 

He also suggested in remarks carried by Saudi state news agency SPA that same month that while Riyadh aimed to boost its ties to Washington it could also choose to reduce "our interests" -- Saudi investments -- in the United States.

 

Saudi Arabia is deepening economies ties to China. It is China's top oil supplier, although fellow OPEC+ producer Russia has increased its Chinese market share with lower-priced fuel.

 

Beijing has also been lobbying for use of its yuan currency in trade instead of the U.S. dollar. Riyadh had previously threatened to ditch some dollar oil trades to confront possible U.S. legislation exposing OPEC members to antitrust lawsuits.

 

U.S.-Saudi ties under Biden's administration, already strained over human rights and the Yemen war in which Riyadh leads a military coalition, have frayed further due to the Ukraine war and OPEC+ oil policy.

 

FANFARE AND DEALS

 

Diplomats in the region said Xi would have a lavish reception akin to the one shown then-President Donald Trump when he visited the kingdom in 2017, and in contrast to Biden's awkward visit in July that had aimed to mend ties with Riyadh.

 

Trump was met by King Salman at the airport amid fanfare while clinching over $100 billion in contracts for U.S. military industry. Biden, who once vowed to make Riyadh "a pariah" over the Khashoggi killing, had downplayed his meetings with Prince Mohammed, to whom he gave a fist-bump rather than a handshake.

 

The Chinese delegation is expected to sign dozens of agreements with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states covering energy, security and investments, diplomats have told Reuters.

 

Prince Mohammed is focused on delivering his Vision 2030 diversification plan to wean the economy off oil by creating new industries, including cars and arms manufacturing as well as logistics, though foreign direct investment has been slow.

 

The kingdom is investing heavily in new infrastructure and megaprojects in tourism and initiatives like the $500 billion NEOM zone, a boon for Chinese construction firms.

 

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies have said they would continue to diversify partnerships to serve economic and security interests, despite U.S. reservations about their ties with both Russia and China.

 

Prince Mohammed wants to demonstrate to his own constituency that the kingdom is important to many global powers, said Jonathan Fulton, non-resident senior fellow at Atlantic Council.

 

"Perhaps he's signalling to the U.S. as well, but...he's more concerned about what people within the kingdom think."

 

COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP

 

Biden pledged "consequences" for Riyadh after the OPEC+ output move but Washington has since reiterated its support for the kingdom's security, with U.S. officials stressing the U.S. "comparative advantage" in building integrated defence structures in the Gulf.

 

White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Wednesday that Washington wants to make sure that its "strategic" relationship with Riyadh was working "in our best interests".

 

U.S. officials have declined to comment when asked about Saudi-China bilateral relations ahead of Xi's visit.

 

Washington has voiced concern over Gulf Arab use of Chinese 5G technology and Chinese investments in sensitive infrastructure like ports, including in the United Arab Emirates which halted a Chinese port project due to U.S. concern.

 

Riyadh and Abu Dhabi are buying Chinese military equipment and a Saudi firm signed a deal with a Chinese company to manufacture armed drones in the kingdom.

 

Saudi analyst Abdulaziz Sager, chairman of Riyadh-based Gulf Research Center, told Saudi TV Asharq News that Arab states wanted to tell Western allies that they have alternatives and their relations are primarily based on economic interests.

 

Though Saudi ties with China appear to be growing "much more quickly" than with the United States, the actual relationships are not comparable, said Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East programme at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies.

 

"The relationships with China pale versus those with the United States in terms of both complexity and intimacy," he said.

China-Arab report stresses mutual respect and opposing hegemony as first summit approaches

 

Ahead of the highly anticipated first China-Arab summit, which is scheduled to be held in early December in Saudi Arabia, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a long report fully reviewing China's long-standing relations with Arab countries, and highlighted the strategic mutual trust in China-Arab ties in the new era, which Chinese experts believe points out the future direction of China-Arab cooperation.

 

Amid the profound changes unseen in a century, China and Arab states face similar opportunities and challenges. China has all along viewed Arab states as strategic partners in our pursuit of peaceful development, further cooperation with developing countries and building a community with a shared future for mankind, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Friday.

 

The comments were made after the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a report titled "China-Arab Cooperation in the New Era" on Thursday night, which looks back at the long-standing friendship between China and Arab countries and highlights the strategic mutual trust of China-Arab ties in the new era.

 

The report is a comprehensive review and summary of China-Arab relations, from historical exchanges and the build-up of strategic ties in various areas to deepening cooperation in political mutual trust, trade cooperation and cultural exchanges, laying out the principle of China-Arab relations and direction of future ties, Liu Zhongmin, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, told the Global Times on Friday.

 

The nearly 19,000-word report elaborates on the friendship between China and Arab states that has been passed down for thousands of years, China-Arab relations in the new era, and how China-Arab cooperation is developing rapidly amidst intertwined changes and building a China-Arab community with a shared future.

 

Both China and Arab countries advocate respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence. They both oppose external interference and all forms of hegemonism and power politics, according to the report.

 

Some countries are clamoring for the so-called "power vacuum theory in the Middle East" while China has always believed that there is no such "power vacuum" and that the people of the Middle East are the masters of the future and destiny of the region, and the international community should respect the status of the masters of countries and people in the region, the report said.

 

Compared with relations between the US and Arab countries, China's relations with them are based on equality and mutual respect with honesty, unlike the US which brings ideological bias in its interactions with the countries, Zhu Yongbiao, executive director of the Research Center for the Belt and Road in Lanzhou University, told the Global Times on Friday.

 

"Also, unlike the US, which always imposes extra geopolitical conditions on its cooperation with Arab countries, China-Arab cooperation is reciprocal and benefits the people from both sides," he said.

 

Saudi Arabia plans to host the Chinese-Arab summit on December 9, Reuters reported, which also comes at a "sensitive time for Saudi-US relations" that have been strained by a dispute over energy supplies.

 

In July, US President Joe Biden visited the Middle East in a bid to reassure the region of his country's commitment to it. However, he ended his trip with little to show.

 

Also, Saudi Arabia and the US have clashed over OPEC+'s decision to cut oil output, reflecting Washington's typical tendency to sacrifice Saudi interests to meet its own strategic interests in the Middle East, experts said. It also drew a sharp contrast to the cooperation between China and Arab countries, which has nothing to do with geopolitical wrestling but aims for development for both sides, they noted.

 

China is willing to take the convening of the first China-Arab Summit as an opportunity to work with Arab countries to carry forward the traditional friendship between China and Arab states, continuously enrich and deepen the pattern of all-dimensional, multi-level, and wide-ranging cooperation, and work together to build a China-Arab community of a shared future for the new era for the benefit of all, according to the report.

 

"The China-Arab Summit is another new and high-level mechanism of China-Arab cooperation, which will help it fully accelerate and upgrade in the future," Liu said.

 

The report also lays out future fields of cooperation, such as promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, increasing exports of non-oil products from Arab nations to the Chinese market and supporting China-Arab investment cooperation in sectors such as oil and natural gas. Chinese experts believed that given the highly complementary nature of China-Arab countries in energy, the summit will focus on cooperation in this field and push forward exploration in emerging areas such as nuclear energy and new energy.

 

"The summit is also likely to focus on energy security and regional security, for example, how to tackle rising uncertainties such as the food and energy crises and climate change, which could also be the focus of China-Arab cooperation in the future," Zhu said.

The Beijing-Riyadh relationship is underpinned by oil. Saudi Arabia is China’s largest supplier of crude and China is the kingdom’s largest trading partner.

 

China’s relationship with the kingdom, and other Gulf countries, has gone beyond oil in recent years, particularly when it comes to technology, something the US has opposed on occasion.

 

That co-operation, particularly on Huawei 5G technology, concerns the US administration, as does the prospect of allowing China security facilities in the Gulf. US hackles have also been raised by speculation that Saudi Arabia could sign a deal with China to settle oil trades in renminbi.

Based on photo sampling calculations more than 1,680 people had gathered by 12:15pm in Spaight's Plaza for a UWM United rally. People voiced support for social justice issues threatened by Governor Walker's Agenda of stark cuts to public education and the middle class. Signs voiced support for a Recall Election of Republican State Senators, including Alberta Darling. Other sign holders and speakers voiced support for Solidarity of Workers, Teachers, Graduate Students, and Students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and candidates in an upcoming election on April 5th for Milwaukee County Supervisor, and for Wisconsin State Supreme Court. The Internet also made a brief, in person, humorous appearance.

I awoke at my regular time in the morning, at precisely 5:45 AM, on the third of March. Yawning slightly, I pushed aside the covers on my prison cot, and rose to don my orange jumpsuit. According to my calculations, based on the previous demographic of prisoners drafted to the military, my date would either be today or tomorrow. Considering this fact happily, I glanced around my cell as I prepared for my morning exercise regimen. Everything was as I had left it, the only other piece of furniture besides my cot was the bin used to hold clothing. I stepped past this to signal the guard, who cautiously opened the bars and directed me to the prison yard. He was sure to stay well behind me as he watched me, prepared for any attack or attempt to escape. All this was done in futility, for if I wanted him harmed, no feeble precautions could stop me. Pushing this into the corner of my mind, an area I kept separate for all my important thoughts, I settled into my favorite area, and began my regimen of push-ups. My favorite time of the day was here in the early morning; the air was still cool, and the dew had just begun to truly settle. Before too long, sweat had gathered on my chest and the small of my back, soaking the jumpsuit through as I continued the numbing exercise. After the 100 pushups, I began the same number of sit-ups. And then came the jumping-jacks, mountain climbers, a few stretches, etc. After I had finished, I repeated it again, and again, until the yard began to stir with life as the other inmates awoke. At this time, tired with my exercise, I began to head back to my cell, guard still in tow. As I entered the building, the hairs on the back of my neck began to stand up. Ever alert, and not one to ignore my sixth sense, I slid to the side while turning around. Behind me, the sharpened end of a toothbrush swung down where I was, in the hand of a brawny inmate. Quickly, my calculating eyes formulated a plan. In slow motion, I struck his wrist at the apex of his swing, grasping it in an iron grip as he stumbled, off balance. Twisting his hand so the shiv pointed upwards, I dealt him a blow to the back of his neck. Slowly he stood up, making a wet gasping noise, a look of mild confusion on his face. He looked down, to see the toothbrush embedded in his windpipe. As the guard reacted, I drew the dying inmate in close, and whispered, “Chaos has no friends, and leaves no enemies.” With this, I gave the brush a brutal twist, and watched the man fall to the floor, a pool of crimson gathering around his prone form. With a contemptuous sniff, I continued on to my cell, the guard standing blank-faced behind me, unsure what to do. Calmly, I closed the door behind me, and settled in for the long wait…

As it turns out, the wait was not as long as I had expected. Less than an hour later, a man in a crisp uniform showed up, entourage in tow. He stood at attention, saluted, and said “Son, welcome to the corps. From now on, you shall be Private… Private… What was your name again? It didn’t show in the prison records.” It took the man several seconds to realize that the hissing sound escaping my lips was laughter.

“No need for names. Names are pointless; they only serve to attach one to a former life. The men I’ll be killing won’t need to know.”

Visibly nervous, the man replied, “Well then, I suppose it doesn’t matter. In any regards, you’ll be serving as First Infantry, under Major Fitzpatrick. When you’re ready, we’ll set off on the train to Durmont, near the front. If there’s anything worth taking with you, gather it now.”

“Now that you mention it, I do have a few things.” With this, I pressed a loose block in the wall, levering a section of the concrete away. Inside, I grabbed a tightly wrapped cloth package, which I unfolded to reveal an array of knives, an ornate punch-dagger, and an odd mask. Refolding it, I stepped to the open cell door, walking past the guard, jaw agape. Smiling inwardly, I followed the soldier down the hallway, to the outside world. Chaos was loose once again…

The Jumo 222 front end was simulated with parts from the spares box, and it is a bit exaggerated. Actually, the Jumo 222 was hardly bigger (in both length and diameter) than the Fw 190D’s Jumo 213 V12 engine! The cowling and the radiator for my conversion came from a Frog He 219 engine nacelle (Revell re-boxing, too) which is utterly dubious. The nacelle parts were turned upside down and integrated into the slender Fw 190 front fuselage with several layers of putty.

Inside of the cowling, a radiator plate from an Italeri Fw 190D was mounted, together with a styrene tube adapter for the new propeller. The latter was scratched, using a drop tank as spinner and single propeller blades from the Mistercraft Fw 190D, plus one donor blade from the Frog Ta 152H kit, which had to be trimmed in order to match the other blades. But with some paint, no one will tell the small differences…

 

Once the bigger engine was integrated into the fuselage, the exhaust system had to be added. In real life, the Jumo 222 would have featured three clusters with two rows of four exhaust stubs, distributed evenly around the cowling. Using a drawing of this arrangement as benchmark, I started with square cuts for the cluster openings. From the back side, styrene sheet closed the gaps and offered a basis for the exhaust stubs. These were improvised with H0 scale roofing shingles – each of the 24 exhaust stubs was cut individually into shape and size and then glued into the respective openings on the upper flanks and under the engine. Finally, styrene sheet was used to create small spoilers and heat shields. The result is certainly not perfect, but comes close to what the real world arrangement would basically have looked like. In a final step, two air intakes for the two-stage supercharger, scratched from sprue material, were added to the flanks.

 

The cockpit remained OOB, simple as it is, as well as the landing gear, but the canopy was modified in order to allow a presentation in open position. This meant that the OOB canopy had to be cut in two parts and that the model’s spine had to be cut away, making place for a donor canopy (the late, bulged variant, IIRC from an Italeri Fw 190D-9). Internally the fuselage gap was filled with putty and the headrest had to be modified, too, but the conversion turned out to look better than expected.

 

As a small cosmetic improvement, the molded gun barrel stumps in the wing roots were replaced with hollow steel needles, and the outer guns were completely removed.

According the first calculations before 2007 the building should cost about 77 million €. By 2013 the cost for the taxpayer amounted to 789 million €. The project should have been finshed years ago, but it still is under construction.

The first chance to fire my BIG GUN since... November! was spent on the old faithfull Jupiter.

Some calculations: the diameter of Jovian disk on the image is 143,75+/-3,9 (SD) pixels and its apparent size was 46,68 arcseconds. That means that I have equivalent angular pixel size of 0,32 arcsec. Assuming that my 150 mm wide telescope really produces its 0,9 arcsecond optical resolution, I have 2,8 pixel per resolved separation that perfectly satisfies the requirements of Nyquist(-Shannon-Kotelnikoff-Whittaker) theorem.

 

Weather was windy and a bit chilly. The wind was causing slight wobbling of the setup and lubricant in the mount was freezing :)

 

The size of planet's disk is apparently smaller than that of 10th of November.

After all this the resulting image was used as luminance component. So this is fake LRGB image.

Notes: Image orientation is partially restored upon data from Jupiter 2 program. Registax processing results in nasty set of rings that are revealed after application of wavelets.

Based on photo sampling calculations more than 1,680 people had gathered by 12:15pm in Spaight's Plaza for a UWM United rally. People voiced support for social justice issues threatened by Governor Walker's Agenda of stark cuts to public education and the middle class. Signs voiced support for a Recall Election of Republican State Senators, including Alberta Darling. Other sign holders and speakers voiced support for Solidarity of Workers, Teachers, Graduate Students, and Students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and candidates in an upcoming election on April 5th for Milwaukee County Supervisor, and for Wisconsin State Supreme Court. The Internet also made a brief, in person, humorous appearance.

This is a new maya codex, which I call the Codex Tatsumi. This is a photograph from the 4th and final round of the 2015 Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 27th May 2015 at 20:00. The weather was perfect for running and racing again and gave bright sunshine with some breeze. The weather conditions were favourable for runners this evening. As this was the final night of a very successful league there were many category prizes up for grabs with runners having to ensure they ran their races to gain the required finish times for the overall calculations. There was a great atmosphere at the finish as spectators cheered on the runners. This year's 5KM is ran on a modified route based on the route from the last couple of years. The final 1KM is within the Belvedere Gardens bringing runners down to the lakeside for a second time and finishing along the aptly named Stream Of Life. The route modification means that the race offers a slightly faster route than the hill finish of previous years. In the prize giving and awards in Belvedere House Cafe there were refreshments served for runners and this brought the curtain down on the Road League for 2015.

The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Runners can also choose to just run one race without being considered for the overall league placings. Over 330 people took part in tonight's event bring the total from the four nights to so far to well over 1,400 runners. As with all of the previous weeks the new finish area provided a nice space for runners to stay around and chat in the evening sunshine. The Mullingar Road League 2015 is now over but has continued successfully and looks to add to the success in the history of this great series. Despite the bright evenings the photographic conditions in Belevedere are difficult so this photograph is part of a smaller than usual photograph set as there were many blurred photographs this evening.

The "Road League" is something of a misnomer but is an indication of the League's origins on the roads around Ladestown Mullingar prior to it's move into Belvedere in 2008. The Road League is the envy of many other races in the country as the Belvedere locations offers a completely traffic free 5KM route.

Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

 

     ►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

     ►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

     ►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

Based on photo sampling calculations more than 1,680 people had gathered by 12:15pm in Spaight's Plaza for a UWM United rally. People voiced support for social justice issues threatened by Governor Walker's Agenda of stark cuts to public education and the middle class. Signs voiced support for a Recall Election of Republican State Senators, including Alberta Darling. Other sign holders and speakers voiced support for Solidarity of Workers, Teachers, Graduate Students, and Students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and candidates in an upcoming election on April 5th for Milwaukee County Supervisor, and for Wisconsin State Supreme Court. The Internet also made a brief, in person, humorous appearance.

The largest room in this building was designated as a morgue. It was adapted as the first provisional gas chamber in the autumn of 1941. The SS used Zyklon B to kill thousands of Jews upon arrival, as well as several groups of Soviet prisoners of war.

 

Prisoners selected in the hospital as unlikely to recover their health quickly were also killed in the gas chamber. Poles sentenced to death by the German summary court.

 

After the establishment in Auschwitz II-Birkenau of two more provisional gas chambers, Bunkers No. 1 and 2 (the so-called "little red house" and "little white house"), the camp authorities shifted the mass murder of the Jews there and gradually stopped using the first gas chamber.

 

After the completion of four crematoria with gas chambers in Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the burning of corpses in Crematorium I was halted. The building was used for storage, and then designated as an SS air-raid shelter. The furnaces, chimney, and some of the walls were demolished, and the openings in the roof through which the SS poured Zyklon B were plastered.

 

After the war, the Museum carried out a partial reconstruction. The chimney and two incinerators were rebuilt using original components, as were and several of the openings in the gas chamber roof [jewishvirtuallibrary.org]

The kit and its assembly:

This is a what-if model, but, as usual, it is rooted in reality – to be precise in the German late-war plans to mate the Ta 152(H) with the mighty Jumo 222 engine. I do not know what the official service designation would have been, but this combo would have resulted in a powerful fighter – AFAIK, German engineers’ calculations indicated a performance that would have been comparable with the post-WWII F4U-5!

 

Creating a model of such this paper aircraft called for some serious conversion work and ended almost in a kitbashing. The starting point became a (cheap) Mistercraft Fw 190D-9 kit, and I originally planned this model to be a Fw 190 variant, but eventually this turned into a Ta 152, since it would better match up with the late war time frame.

The Mastercraft/Mistercraft kit appears to be an indigenous mold and not a re-issue of a vintage kit. At first glance the parts look pretty crisp, but the kit has some serious fit and flash issues. Another selling point is the detailed decal set, which comes in three sheets and encompasses a lot of stencils – even though the instructions where to place them are not consistent, and there are even 1:48 scale(!) markings included. But that’s a Mastercraft/Mistercraft standard, anyway…

 

Well, the basis was sound and the kit would, in any event, be thoroughly modified. From the OOB kit, fuselage, wings and stabilizers were taken, as well as the landing gear and some other bits.

 

The wings were extended, in order to keep overall proportions with the new, much more massive engine cowling balanced (see below). Not an easy stunt, but I was lucky to have recently bought a set of resin Doppelreiter tanks from Airmodel which were just perfect to cover the cuts and seams on the upper wing surfaces. Inside of the wings, a styrene strip secured stability while the lower wing surface was sculpted with putty and the trailing edge of the outer wing panels was cut down by 1 mm, so that the wings’ outlines match again. Some further PSR work was necessary to blend the slipper tanks into the wings, forming the upper side of the modifications, but in the end the whole thing looks quite good.

 

The fuselage lost both its original engine and the tail. The latter is a donor part from a Frog Ta 152H (Revell re-boxing), but mating it with the Mistercraft Fw 190D was not easy because the fuselage shapes of the two kits are totally different! I also used the Mistercraft stabilizers because they were markedly bigger than the same parts from the Ta 152 kit!

 

The Jumo 222 front end was simulated with parts from the spares box, and it is a bit exaggerated. Actually, the Jumo 222 was hardly bigger (in both length and diameter) than the Fw 190D’s Jumo 213 V12 engine! The cowling and the radiator for my conversion came from a Frog He 219 engine nacelle (Revell re-boxing, too) which is utterly dubious. The nacelle parts were turned upside down and integrated into the slender Fw 190 front fuselage with several layers of putty.

Inside of the cowling, a radiator plate from an Italeri Fw 190D was mounted, together with a styrene tube adapter for the new propeller. The latter was scratched, using a drop tank as spinner and single propeller blades from the Mistercraft Fw 190D, plus one donor blade from the Frog Ta 152H kit, which had to be trimmed in order to match the other blades. But with some paint, no one will tell the small differences…

 

Once the bigger engine was integrated into the fuselage, the exhaust system had to be added. In real life, the Jumo 222 would have featured three clusters with two rows of four exhaust stubs, distributed evenly around the cowling. Using a drawing of this arrangement as benchmark, I started with square cuts for the cluster openings. From the back side, styrene sheet closed the gaps and offered a basis for the exhaust stubs. These were improvised with H0 scale roofing shingles – each of the 24 exhaust stubs was cut individually into shape and size and then glued into the respective openings on the upper flanks and under the engine. Finally, styrene sheet was used to create small spoilers and heat shields. The result is certainly not perfect, but comes close to what the real world arrangement would basically have looked like. In a final step, two air intakes for the two-stage supercharger, scratched from sprue material, were added to the flanks.

 

The cockpit remained OOB, simple as it is, as well as the landing gear, but the canopy was modified in order to allow a presentation in open position. This meant that the OOB canopy had to be cut in two parts and that the model’s spine had to be cut away, making place for a donor canopy (the late, bulged variant, IIRC from an Italeri Fw 190D-9). Internally the fuselage gap was filled with putty and the headrest had to be modified, too, but the conversion turned out to look better than expected.

 

As a small cosmetic improvement, the molded gun barrel stumps in the wing roots were replaced with hollow steel needles, and the outer guns were completely removed.
