My annual Elm in Pedestrian Walkway Cage shot...

It is a traditional image beloved by the hobos and the MMA fighters.

"Every touch, of every scene

Is just beautifully broken as a bird without wings...We'll never know what it's like to be free, how do you show, what can't be should be?" -Katie Herzig

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wings

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and

his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with fearful trill

of the things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn

and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.

Sometimes I can't shake the heartache. I think about my foster kids who have moved on. I think about my nursery, empty. I think about dreams I used to have - changed, irrevocably. I give myself a mental slap - everything is *so good*. I look at my career and I can't actually believe it. I look at my family and I'm so lucky. Grief isn't the opposite of joy. Two different emotions can exist at the same time. My grief hangs in my chest like a bird dead in its cage. I still see beauty, I feel it, I know it's there - I create it. But the grief tugs on me, a reminder that while there is goodness, there is also loss.

We wonder why money, fame, success, flourishing relationships, and all of *that* don't make us truly happy. For me, it's the thoughts that come uncalled into my mind: Is Jude okay? Did I do alright for him for those 8 months last year? Is Coco crying right now? Is she giggling? I taught her how to smile. I'll never really know. Out there is a child who I'll come to love and who I'll lose. Do I grieve them now, knowing that day is coming? Do I dare to imagine them?

I carry joy and grief in me, my caged bird tugging at my heart. I'll find a way to fly again. I can carry the pain on my heartstrings so that others can carry a little less weight.

And I'll keep making art.

This long-abandoned county jail is substantially collapsed except for the cellblocks, which appear to be the kind of heavy steel structures that are basically built to stand on their own within the walls of the building.

So while the masonry, floors, ceiling and roof rot away, the human cages endure.

Underground railroad 'improvement', I like to think of this shot. An old abandoned railroad tunnel needs this kind of attention, don't you think?

This is my first attempt at a flare cage. Could've used one of the lights I brought, but I wanted a little smoke in the tunnel as well.

Thing learned:

1) Cage construction ... not so bad. I see where I missed a little when turning around.

2) Flare is BRIGHT! Try f/8 next time.

3) LED behind camera is a godsend. Had to walk backwards in and out of the shot, so extra illumination helped me keep my bearings and avoid tripping.

4) Don't look up when holding flare above head.

I think this photo is a little deceiving but a simple title like Caged seems to fit. The cockatoo though was actually being very friendly and cheeky and was following me around for a chat. Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos at the Hunter Valley Zoo

From a walk on Thanksgiving Day. I was struck by the contrasts in this scene. The branches seemed like a cage with this beautiful, golden tree behind in the fog.

Top view, with look out compartment removed.

I took out the 17-cm wheel that came with this cage and replaced it with a 21-cm wheel from the same brand. A lot of cages cannot fit this 21-cm wheel and this one nearly couldn't either - the gaps are really small. If the wheel were just half a cm bigger, it would have been simply impossible.

Dull pic today guys : )

I feel caged up and locked today. I miss the taste of freedom. I've only felt that emotion whenever I travel..

Today was just one of those days. It didn't help that it was grey and miserable and rainy and cold. I'm just going to upload this and after this description go kick back with the book I'm currently reading... mmm.

I keep forgetting what day it is today.. really didn't feel like a Monday..

See where this picture was taken. [?]

I have been doing a lot of these. And if truth be told, these are not my absolute favorite ones of the series: Those I am keeping under my hat for now... ;-)

The poses are by Frigg Ragu. The preset used is a modified version of London 2050 by Mescaline Tammas. I reduced the gamma to practically zero and then added a lot of tiny light prims set to a very low range scattered all around the avatars.

Needless to say, the original SL photograph has subsequently been very heavily deconstructed in photoshop.
