ANCIENT ROMAN IMPERATORIAL AND IMPERIAL SILVER COINS, Augustus (27 BC - AD 14), Denarius, uncertain mint, 17 BC, CAESAR, young bare head (of Gaius Caesar?) right, all within oak-wreath, rev AVG-VST, ornamented candelabrum, all within floral wreath decorated with bucrania and paterae, 3.87g (RIC 540; BMC 684; RCV 1749). Beautiful old cabinet tone with slight iridescence, a little wear on highest point of obverse, otherwise extremely fine, a very attractive example. bought for £4/15/- Augustus adopted his grandsons Gaius and Lucius Caesar in 17 BC, marking his intention to include them both in his plans for the succession. The portrait on the obverse of this coin, taken with the legend ‘CAESAR’ appearing below it, has traditionally been identified as that of Gaius, but more recent thinking has attributed it to that of a youthful portrait of Augustus himself. The precise identification remains unclear.

The unusual spelling of his cognomen aside, it is quite possible that this moneyer is the Numonius Vala whom Horace mentions in Epistle 1.15.1-6. As Horace’s Vala was apparently quite familiar with the countryside of southern Italy, particularly Velia and Salernum, it is quite possible that the gens Numonia derived its origin from Campania, and, as novi homines, acquired Roman citizenship as a result of the Social War (91-88 BC). The cognomen Vaala refers to some ancestral military exploit, in which that individual bravely stormed a well-defended rampart in battle, a deed commemorated on the reverse of this coin. A subsequent Numonius Vala was not so courageous, for while serving as a legate of Quinctilius Varus and commanding his cavalry during the disaster at the Teutoburger Forest, he was killed while attempting to flee the battle (Vell. Pat. 2.119.4).

At some point during the day, a lot of light reflects back from the Flamingo making this shot possible. This is not HDR, flash or digging in the shadows, just an accident of the summer sun.
This is a Black Standard Poodle posing (poosing, perhaps?)
as EmPOOror Poolius Caesar. I think, artistically, that the Black Standards look the most serious of the variety. But then: “O Judgement, thou art fled to brutish beasts and men hath lost their reason…”

Julius Caesar
Trajanic copy (AD 110) of an original of 50 BC
The bust was found at the Monastery of San Lorenzo, in the locality Spolia Christi, in the area where in the Middle Ages the Forum of Trajan was thought to be located.
The bust, placed on a moulded base with a concave profile and integrated by C. Albacini, portrays Julius Caesar with regular features, hair in tufts curled towards the forehead, the skull particularly developed, two deep horizontal wrinkles on the forehead and a protruding chin. The face represents a mature image of the dictator with knitted brows and bulging eyelids. The cheeks are furrowed by deep wrinkles of expression, the thin mouth is shut. The hair is combed in kiss-curls that frame the face, starting from the top of the head to camouflage the incipient baldness.
