opening night. when i first moved to windsor i hated this ugly eyesore of a building, but it's begun to grow on me, which means i may be turning into a true windsorite. peter and i have only been inside once, at 3 in the morning with phil and lisa while walking home drunk from downtown, and only then because phil was hungry and i had to pee. it was eerily empty and quiet inside at 3 in the morning, until we turned a corner into a giant room where row upon row of glassy-eyed old ladies robotically pushed the buttons that slowly sucked out all of their savings. peter did some quick mental calculations to figure out how much money a person could lose in one minute of button-pushing on the slot machines, and we beat a frightened retreat, never to return.
it'll be interesting to see if the place continues to bring in the calibre of performers they've got lined up for the first few months. not that much of the current lineup is to my taste, exactly (billy joel played last night for the grand opening) but still. not a lot of big names come to our town.
peter and i both found ourselves wishing that ugly brown-on-brown apartment building had been torn down to make room for the casino expansion (the tower on the left is the old casino windsor tower, and the one on the right is new). yeah, the casino is butt-ugly but it's an ugly with character. that apartment building on the right, however, is totally awesome.

As a Christmas gift, I bought Ting a massage during a weekend getaway to Victoria. While she was being massaged by some dude (yeah, what?) I sat in a bar, getting kind of drunk and conversing with the locals.
One bartender was making a Caesar - I asked him what the hell it was. He said, "Oh, I'm going to pop another American Caesar cherry, eh!" No joke.
It was good.

in 15 BC, the Roman general Nero Claudius Drusus, the adopted son of Augustus, got orders from his stepfather to improve the passage through the Alps for military purposes and to increase Roman control over Rhaetia and Noricum.[3] The project of converting a pack-animal trail to serve wheeled vehicles was completed sixty years later in 46-47 AD by the son of Drusus, the Emperor Claudius. People and goods could pass between the Adriatic and the broad valley of the Po to Tridentum (modern Trento), then northward following the Adige River up to Pons Drusi, the "bridge of Drusus" which developed into Bolzano. Thence it continued towards Maia (near Meran), and over the Reschen Pass. From the pass it descended through the valleys of the Inn River and the Lech, just beyond Augusta Vindelicorum (Augsburg), with an extension to Burghoefe ( Sumuntorium ), now Mertingen near the Danube river and not far from the present-day town of Donauwörth; here the Via Claudia Augusta branched into the then important Roman military road running from West to East on the south side of the Danube river (via militaris iuxta riva danuvii or shorter via iuxta danuvii). This then important road is called by modern day German historians Donausüdstrasse. It served to secure the Roman northern frontier, which was marked until the end of the first century by the Danube river.
Two milestones have been found, one at Rabland, a frazione of Partschins, near Meran in the South Tyrol[4] and the other in Cesiomaggiore, near Belluno. Both are inscribed with the far terminus of the Via Claudia Augusta, Augusta Vindelicorum (modern Augsburg). The milestones indicate that two routes joined at Tridentium before crossing the Alpine pass: one found its starting point at the vicus of Ostiglia, near the Po, the other, its site less securely identified by archaeologists and historians, at the Adriatic port of Altinum, (near the Venetian Lagoon). On its way to Tridentium, that route crossed the Via Annia, which linked Adria to Aquileia, the Via Popilia, which linked Altinum with Rimini, the Via Aurelia, between Padua and Feltre passing through Asolo, and the Via Postumia, the road linking Genoa and Aquileia. This road was initiated by Drusus as a military artery of conquest and defence, and Emperor Claudius continued its development as a cultural and commercial artery with permanently populated posting stations where fresh horses would be available. Some grew into considerable settlements and were fortified during the later Empire. Others can be identified only by the findings of archaeologists. In the 2nd century AD, a second Alpine pass was opened to wheeled traffic, the Brenner Pass.

Caesar, Gaius Julius (100-44 BC)
Templum Divi Iuli sits on the site of the funeral pyre of Julius Caesar. Augustus had the structure built after the battle of Actium.
Today one sees several portions of the foundation. It is thought that the altar on which Caesar's body had been cremated was in the center of a platform in the temple.

In 1962, Jay Sarno, a cabana motel owner, used US$35 million that had been lent to him by the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund to begin plans for a hotel on land owned by Kirk Kerkorian. Sarno would later act as designer of the hotel he planned to construct.
Building of the 14-story Caesars Palace hotel began in 1962. That first tower would have 680 rooms on the 34 acre (138,000 m2) site.
Sarno struggled to decide on a name for the hotel. He finally decided to call it Caesars Palace because he thought that the name Caesar would evoke thoughts of royalty because of Roman general Julius Caesar.
Sarno contracted many companies to build the hotel, from the Roman landscapes it presents, to the water fountains that have been stages of various events and the hotel's swimming pools.
