The last heat wave of the picking season was hitting the Napa Valley at the time I took these shots.
Temperature: 96 degrees fahrenheit, 35.5 Celsius
Clear blue skies with hardly any wind.
The temperature will be hotter the next two or three days.
And on the the evening of the final hot day the Cabernet grapes will be picked all night long through the next morning for the Big Crush.
I can taste it already!

2005 Mouton Cadet, Pauillac – France, £8.19 Sainsbury
This wine comes from one of the best wineries in the world but its not their top wine, its merely something they make on the side to use the grapes that wasn’t good enough for the top wines. The colour is a bit darker so we know there will be a little more fruit here. Lots of berries, all the colours you can think of but more black berries than red. This wine is not bad for £8 and will be great with Venison or Ostrich fillets.

We are involved in every aspect of winemaking. It is wonderful to lay hands on the fruit as it begins it's journey to becoming delicious and complex wines.

Fresno State general viticulture 101 students harvested Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and recorded yield data in the campus vineyard as part of a yield mapping experiment. Students were assigned equidistant points on a fishnet grid, and counted numbers of plants and clusters to decide the yield for a certain vine and determining variability. It was the first time that exercised was conducted by the class in the vineyard by new faculty member Dr. Luca Brillante and will allow for comparisons in the future. The grapes will crushed and used for a wine-making class. 2018, photo by Geoff Thurner, Copyright 2018.
