I've already used real rose petals and wanted to use the very similar confetti so this is what I decided to do with it.

The riverside at Reedham c1912 The passenger steamer seen heading downstream was probably the "Pride of the Yare" which ran day trips between Great Yarmouth and Norwich. It was the sister ship to the well known "Queen of The Broads" which continued to operate on the Broads until it was broken up in 1976. The Pride of the Yare was sold and moved to the River Trent in Nottingham c1950s.

In the background, on the far right, you can see part of the old riverside maltings complex. By the 1930s, the maltings buildings were being used as a bottling plant for a local wine merchant and then became a mushroom factory . During the 1960s and 1970s it was the site of the Reedcraft boatyard - that business later moved further upstream. The old maltings were demolished and housing now occupies the site in the form of Quay Terrace.

Glass by Pearce & Cutler c1912 on the south side of the nave.

St Thomas's church in Nuthurst, on the southern edge of Hockley Heath, was built in 1879 by John Cotton (partially in answer to the erection of the fine Umberslade Baptist church set in the fields a short distance further south).

The real surprise after it's hard external brick is the pale interior, all finished in yellow brick in contrast to the red outside. The church also has some good Arts & Crafts glass in the nave, specifically a recently identified Theodora Salusbury window.

The church is normally kept locked (as a couple of less successful previous visits proved) but I am happy to report that the church is now opened on Sundays between 11am & 2pm.

My grandmother posed and keeping very still (and solemn) for the photographer. At this time the Cravens ran The Albert Hotel pub on Ribbleton Lane.

My Great Grandpa Frank and his Brother, Arthur, moved with the family to Brantford, Ontario, Canada while they installed sandcutters there. My Great Uncle Art was born while they were living there. Possibly a sister, too.

A secend attempt at colourising this photograph. I've used slightly less vivid colours in an effort to make it look more realistic.

Guild church. Late C14/early C15 with later alterations including work between 1912 and 1914 by Sir Ninian Comper; built on the site of an older church and incorporating some of the materials. Rag stone and brick with stone dressings and quoins to tower; returns rendered. 4 bays with southern aisle plus western tower and having a rear vestry hall and 5-bay _loggia (c1902-04) forming 2 sides of a small courtyard; a small church being approximately 56 1/2 feet long and 30 feet high, surrounded on 3 sides by tall C20 buildings. Western tower with central pointed arch, moulded doorway having C20 part-glazed doors; above, a segmental headed 3-light traceried window. Coped parapet beneath which a clock face. Late C18 2-stage rectangular bell-turret, each stage with projecting dentil cornice, surmounted by an ogee roof with weathervane dated 1671. Interior has a tower separated from the nave by an arch. Aisle piers with 4 shafts and 4 hollows, 2-centred double-hollowed-chamfered arches... 4 stained glass windows by Leonard Walker, dedicated between 1928 and 1947, to north and south aisles, 3 dedicated to Henry Hudson (he and his crew took communion here in 1607 before they set out on their quest for the North-West Passage) and a fourth to the Revd. W.F. Geikie-Cobb (rector 1900-41). Unusual eastern aisle window 1936 by Hugh Easton, dedicated to Harriette Geikie-Cobb (the rector's wife); 3 figures of love, joy and peace in an idealised landscape.5-light eastern window under moulded 4-centred arch by Kempe, 1878, replacing an earlier one in a classical setting. Three pieces of C15 glass in a western window and 4 pieces of C17 heraldic glass in sanctuary and chapel. Reredos in the form of a painted mural, depicting the crucified and risen Christ, St Luke with a patient and St Ethelburga with children, by Hans Feibusch, 1962. 5-arch wooden screen by comper, c1912, with fan-vaulted spandrels supporting a rood loft with openwork balustrade. Also by Comper, the plain western gallery with spiral stair and other woodwork including the alter candlesticks and standards. Hexagonal C18 font with C17 Carved wooden cover from destroyed St Swithen, London stone... Rear courtyard, on the site of former graveyard; with octagonal pond, 1923, having central terracotta fountain possibly by the Potters Arts Guild, Compton. St Ethelburga's is one of eight pre- 1666 churches left in the City. Until 1932 the western tower was partly obscured by 2 shops of c1570 and c1613 with a tunnel-like porch giving access to the church doorway and later upper storey accommodation extending across the facade masking the west window. The C18 bell turret replaced a steeple from which came the present C17 weathervane. In the latter part of the C19 the church was in the Van of the Catholic revival; it became a guild church in 1954. GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDY

Statement of Significance

History

Linked with the construction of 257-265 Flinders Lane (q.v.), this was one of two warehouses commissioned by L. Stevenson & Sons (merchants and warehousemen) from builders, Christopherson & Brown. Both were designed by architects, Reed Smart & Tappin, in 1898.

By the early 1900s, the City Property Co. Ltd. was the owner with Stevenson's first tenants, warehousemen and

millinery specialists Brooks McGlashan, and McHarg (and others) staying on. D. & W. Murray Ltd. (warehousemen) were the next owners c1912 and, like Stevensons, they also owned the two adjoining warehouses on the east. Their architects, Bates Peebles and Smart, designed extra floors for these and possibly 267-75 Flinders Lane, boosting the former five levels to seven in ratebook descriptions (six floors and basement today). Tenants sharing the Lane (271-275) include Kemsley & Co., importers and indenters, many manufacturers' agents, Law & Tipton, straw hat makers and Charles Bayer & Co., manufacturers.

Later alterations were carried out for Brooks McGlashan & McHarg, in 1936, to the design of H.W. & F.B. Tompkins. These converted the ground level to retail shopfronts, after 40 years of wholesaling. A shallow cantilever verandah was also added.

Brooks, McGlashan & McHarg started their fancy goods importing business in 1884, close to this site, under John Brooks. McGlashan joined him from a long stint with William Watson & Sons and McHarg came from Patterson, Laing & Bruce. Each had specialized in a particular branch of the trade and in the late 1880s they claimed to be the only colonial firm to send a buyer to Britain and the Continent twice a year. Their business brought ribbons, laces, silks, embroideries, feathers, flowers and millinery to their Melbourne warehouse, attracting as co-tenants other like agents or hat manufacturers, settled close to their supply of materials.

Description

An austere Italian Renaissance design in unpainted cement rendered brick work with dividing string and cornice moulds and a gabled pediment at the parapet. Windows are timber-framed in six-lights and subtle Tuscan order capitals have been applied to the dividing pilasters.

External Integrity

Generally original (shopfronts and canopy accounted for) except for added air units and painted brick at the rear.

Streetscape

Contributing to an important late 19th early 20th Century warehouse streetscape.

Significance

Externally near original in a successful if austere and conservative design and typical of the adjacent notable warehouse streetscape.
