Balhouse Castle
----------------------
The origins of Balhouse Castle are side to dale back to 12th century.Originally an L-shape tower house what we see today is the central part, possible dating from the 17th century.Documentation of Balhousie Castle begins in the 15th century. In 1422,Murdoch Steward 2nd Duke of Albany granted the Barony of Balhousie to John Eviot. The property remained in the Eviot Family, whith a brief interlude in which the Mercers,a well-known family in the Burgh of Perth, had possession of the property, until 1609,when the land were sold by Colin Eviot to John Mathew, son of Robert Mathew, merchant of Perth. The property then passed to Andrew Grant and John Lamb.
On September 27,1625,King Charles I of Great Britain granted to Master Francis Hay,his heirs and assignees, the land and barony of Balhousie. He was the son of Peter Hay of Raitray and was a writer to the Signet before 1617.He acquired several properties in Perthshire and Wigtownshire, including George Hay the Barony of Dupplin in 1642.He was fined $322.00 under Cromwell's Act of Grace and Pardon in 1654.He was succeded by his son George Hay (died 1672),who in turn was succeded by his son Thomas Hay.
Thomas Hay of Balhouse was the Member of Parliament for Perthshire in the 1690s.He was created Viscount Dupplin, with remember to heirs-male of his body on December 31,1697.

The Hays did not live at Balhousie Castle, their main residence was a Dupplin by the early 1860s the Balhousie Castle was in dilapidated state.Only the first floor was inhabited.Thomas Robert restored the Balhousie Castle and added two wings to the original L-shape tower house. The architect he employed was Divid Smart. The building was then let out.The tenants include,Henry Hay Norie,a lawyer,John Shields of Wallace Works, who died in 1889 and James Ramsay,a jute broker.
The Hay Family came to live at the Balhousie Castle c1912 and remained until 1926.The Balhousie Castle then became a convent. The nuns were from the Society of St.Peter and were associated with St.Ninian's Episcopal Cathedral. They appear to have resided in the Balhousie Castle c 1940.

The Haberfield Model Pictures was built in 1912, and served a dual use as skating rink and cinema. The single storey building was constructed in pressed metal imitation stone, with mock turrets along the top of the front facade. The auditorium was a large galvonised iron shed, with a concrete floor for the roller skating. It was taken over by John Patience in 1920 and his family purchased the building in 1924.
They demolished the old structure and built the Haberfield Theatre which opened on 25th September 1925. The initials 'HT' are in the stonework on the Classical style facade. Seating in the auditorium was in stalls and circle levels.
Always independently operated, with the death of John Patience in 1940, a new owner took over and it was re-named Elite Theatre. By 1950 it was operated by G. Goldie.
The Elite Theatre was closed on Easter Saturday 28th March 1970, and was converted into a supermarket, which in 2009 is operated by IGA Lamonica.

... Is her pet. A bit of a wallow in 'chocolate box' image jigsaws - here are three great examples, two sold by BCD members.
Left: A stunning push-fit jigsaw with letter whimsies, 897pc, now housed in a cardboard Harrods box. The painting is c1912 by Arthur J Elsley, and I think it is called 'Play Nicely' or 'Make Friends'. This was sold on by Anobethio and I would really have liked to have won it.
Centre: This Pears print jigsaw appears on pg58 of Tom Tyler's book and I bought it from the collection of Dave Cooper. It is 600pc, measures 24x17in wooden and the print was issued in the 1909 album. The painting is Naughty Boy or Compulsory Education by Briton Riviere. The cut is extraordinary with both line-cutting and a dazzling selection of shapes.
Right: An Optimago Enigma Gold Box jigsaw of 250pc, measuring 14x11in dating from 1980s - 2005. This range sought to emulate the earlier Victory Gold Box range and had a similar interlocking cutting style and no guide picture on the box.
I noticed another jigsaw of this painting in the Strong Museum collection, via Anne Williams. It is a beauty by GW Fiss Jnr, dated 1910, and the photo can be enlarged considerably. He often based puzzles on prints with large areas of solid color and cut elaborate designs in these areas with very similar shapes. Fiss cut a spider web pattern in the upper left quadrant of the puzzle, easily visible in the dark brown color of that area (this reminds me of something Ian Pedley did regularly in his jigsaws). George W. Fiss's puzzle notebook (also in the Strong's collection) shows that they cut a total of 114 puzzles between 1909 and 1921 and loaned them to family and friends.

Briton Rivière RA (1840 – 1920) was a British artist of Huguenot descent. He was largely trained by his father an artist and academic at Cheltenham College and Oxford University. After a short period from 1857 exhibiting history paintings, he soon turned to animal subjects from 1865 and also worked as an illustrator beginning with Punch. He was elected an RA Associate in 1878, a Royal Academician in 1881 and was narrowly defeated in the election for President of the RA in 1896.
According to the standard catalog of Farm Tractors, the Ajax Auto Traction Company was in business around 1912 and closing shortly after that. Some google searching came up with dates of 1909-1912, and also a picture of a No 2 tractor. No information on how many were made or if any still exist.
A page from the wonderfully detailed Bacon's Atlas of London & Suburbs, this being dated from c1912 by one of the 'special maps' bound in at the front of the atlas. The bulk of London is covered in a series of map sheets at 4" to the mile and is very detailed giving a clear indication of the pre-WW1 city, in its full Victorian and Edwardian splendour but before the massive inter-war expansion into 'Metroland' and similar suburbs.
Bacon's was formed by one George Washington Bacon (1830–1922), an American who set up business in London producing atlases and maps of the capital in about 1870 after a series of business failures. G W Bacon prospered and in c1900 were acquired by the Scottish publishers and cartographers W. & A.K. Johnston of whom they became a subsidiary.
This double page, scanned in two sections, shows the geographical extent of one of the most feared Victorian institutions; the Poor House and the Poor Law Unions that administered them. The Unions were set up in 1834 to adminster poor law relief, the most basic of social welfare schemes, and to set up more centralised workhouses so as to more effectively manage the issues of the 'poor and needy'. They developed, at times, a grim reputation although many 'workhouses' effectively morphed in later years into nascent local hospitals and old aged pensioner homes. The Poor Law legislation was finally amended in 1929 and in 1930 the Unions and their administrative boards were abolished, work being transferred to local authorities. The boundaries of many Poor Law Unions helped form the basis of many rural and urban district councils from 1894, they being formed of an amalgamations of various neighbouring parishes.
c1912 postcard view of an Indiana Union Traction Company trolley car stopped at Montpelier, Indiana. Passengers appear to be boarding the car as others watch. An I.U.T. CO. TICKET OFFICE sign is hanging on the front of a building near the left edge of the postcard. Both the 1910 and the 1920 Sanborn fire insurance map sets show the station just north of Greenbush Square at 221 South Main Street. This view is looking south.

c1912 postcard view of a summer (open-sided) streetcar of the Indiana Railways & Light Company. The car is full and everyone is posing for the photographer. The photograph was taken at a railroad crossing, but there are no other details regarding the location.
This interurban line came into existence in 1912 as the result of a merger of the Kokomo, Frankfort & Western Traction Company and the Kokomo, Marion & Western Traction Company. Besides the interurban service, the company operated a local streetcar service in Kokomo. The sign above the headlamp of this car reads SOUTH LOOP TO CITY PARK. Several years ago, a Kokomo collector pointed out that this car appears to be identical to a car shown in a postcard view of City Park. The park is located on the south side of Kokomo. The other sign includes the name LOGANSPORT.

Jane Squibb died of tuberculosis on 30th Janiuary 1799 in her fifteenth year.
She impressed Legh Richmond initially by learning by heart the texts of two headstones in the churchyard at Brading.
Her own headstone bears the following, now worn, inscription:
Tread gently o'er this grave as ye explore
The short and simple annals of the poor.
A child reposes underneath this sod;
A child to memory dear, and dear to God.
Rejoice! Yet shed the sympathetic tear.
Jane 'The Young Cottager,' lies buried here.
