The C&O used to maintain a small yard at Porter Jct, just off the connection with Conrail. There was a small yard office with train order signals, and you could usually find something worthwhile to shoot there. I would say that a yellow nosed GP30 was worthwhile, at least to me.

After the various EMD bulldogs and ALCos the most iconic of Australian built diesels were the ten C class locomotives built for the Victorian Railways (later V/Line) in 1977/78 and powered by an EMD 645E3 rated at 3000hp.
They spent most of their first two decades on the broad gauge track (5'3") between Melbourne and Adelaide hauling interstate freights, although a couple could often be found on the standard gauge north to Sydney.
In 1995 ownership passed from V/Line to the federally owned National Rail Corporation and for another three years they continued mainly working on the Adelaide corridor which had been converted to standard gauge the same year.
The C class were placed in storage (apart from two that were resurrected for terminal shunting) for several years until sold to niche private operator Silverton Rail who progressively reactivated them from 2003 onwards, with most also receiving a substantial refurbishment and upgrade in the process.
There have been several changes of ownership since then and in April this year most were back in storage again with no regular work.
To the rescue came Southern Shorthaul Railroad who purchased six from loco hire company Engenco, with SSR quickly finding work for them on short-term coal and grain haulage contracts.
Six months ago we thought it was all over for the mighty C class, yet just a few days ago I was lucky enough to watch C506/C507 pass through Gulgong, NSW, with #8478 loaded grain bound for Port Waratah (Newcastle).
