The passing by Western Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica) buzzed by close enough to this White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus) that it scared it off its perch. Coyote Hills RP, Fremont, CA.

The hummingbirds are getting more active in our garden now - with the hot summer temperatures many of the spring flowers they were feeding from are in short supply and so the hummingbird feeders in our garden are looking more attractive. I'm going to have to work on having the hummers feel more comfortable with people around as they feed but I was able to catch this one in the bright evening sun as it hovered briefly by the feeder.

I typically upload in small sets - don't just look at the latest one in my photostream as you might be missing something you'll like more, and your comments are ALWAYS welcome :)

Bottom tier Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Buttercream, Moon Tier was Vanilla Cake with Strawberry Buttercream. Buzz was made of Rice Crispy Treats covered in fondant. This large cake (20" tall) was transported 4 hours on a 95 degree day with 80% humidity.

When Carpenter bees land on flower blossoms, they become living tuning forks. Using their powerful thoracic muscles, carpenter bees sonicate the dry pollen grains out of the flower’s anthers. This type of pollen gathering is called “buzz pollination.” Carpenter bees are excellent pollinators of eggplant, tomato and other vegetables and flowers.
