To visit the Coyote Buttes South is to step into an otherworldly landscape of textures, shapes colours. A visual assault.
Only 20 people per day are issued permits for this location on the Paria Plateau in the Vemillion Cliffs National Monument.
We had some snow, some rain and a little bit of sun and blue sky. Sorry - not enough superalatives to describe what millions of geology have done.
We toured the area with our guide, Dallas, from Paria Outfitters - superb, attentive and seemed to be having as much fun as us!

A new painting I made based on Raquel Nave's polaroid of Mollie Gondi. I can't wait to show you the rest as I finish them up. Raquel & Mollie inspired a series of these.

The hammock comes with straps to wrap around the trees to protect their bark. The straps are long enough for trees that are up to about 12" diameter. My tree choices were mostly bigger than 4 feet diameter (!) or smaller than 4 inches. I lashed the hammock high and tight, bending the poor little vine maples without mercy. I tightened the ropes several times, and finally I could lie in the hammock without my butt rubbing the ground.

The Pawnee Buttes are two prominent buttes located within the Pawnee National Grassland in Weld County, of northeastern Colorado. Rising approximately 300 feet (91 m) above the surrounding plains, the buttes are erosional remnants left standing in isolation as the surrounding High Plains surface has gradually worn away. The lower portions of the buttes are composed of relatively soft, clay-rich sedimentary rock called the Brule formation. The Brule formation is protected by an overlying layer of sandstone and conglomerate sediments called the Arikaree formation, which are more resistant to weathering.
