Last week my Flickr friend Thomas and I took a run down to the California Central Valley to check out the Sutter Buttes. The Sutter Buttes are renowned for being the smallest mountain range in the world. That's the local brag anyway and I can believe it. You can jam over after your morning walk with the dogs, drive around their circumference, snap off a few shots, and be back for lunch and a nap.
If you're in the neighborhood, the Buttes are definitely worth a nose-around. They're a pretty cool volcanic outcropping that juts out of the California Central Valley like a load of camel humps that came dislodged during a mad dash for dinner. Despite being a California state park, the Buttes are surrounded by private property with only a couple of gated "restricted access" roads leading into the park. As far I could see, this venue is a drive-by event unless you have some special clearance from a high authority, like Elmer who runs the local bait shop and controls the access permits. It's probably just as well. The Buttes reputedly sport a healthy glut of rattlesnakes. A friend of my wife told me that when her group went on a hike here, they brought along a Native American who was a snake charmer--swear on a stack of bibles and may my hair fall out if I'm lying.
Sutter Buttes, Sutter County, CA
Coyote Buttes is a section of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), spanning extreme South Central Utah and North Central Arizona, just south of US 89 halfway between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona. It is divided into two areas: Coyote Buttes North and Coyote Buttes South. Visiting either of the Coyote Buttes areas requires purchasing a hiking permit in advance. Only 20 people per day are allowed to hike in.
One of the highlights of Coyote Buttes North Area is the rock formation known as The Wave, a swirling sandstone formation.
The Wave and Buckskin Gulch share the Wire Pass Trailhead on House Rock Valley Road.

I have a full proof plan on getting ALL of Santa's Toys this year. As he squeezes his big butt out of my fireplace, I'm gonna turn on all the Christmas lights and have my three Cats do the Can-Can dance (it's the only dance they know besides the Chicken Dance). Then all I have to do is sneak up to the roof wearing my sexy Reindeer outfit to distract those giant flying rats that pull his sleigh and grab Santa's sack of toys! It'll work.

It didn't work. Santa crashed down the chimney and rolled across my floor sending soot everywhere. As the Christmas Lights lit up, the first cat kept sleeping, the second decided to lick himself and the third one just sat there farting the whole time. Santa wouldn't even look at them. To make matters worse, the eight tiny reindeer were all drunk and they STILL wouldn't notice me.
