Ema (絵馬) are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. The ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) receive them. They bear various pictures, often of animals or other Shinto imagery, and many have the word gan'i (願意), meaning "wish", written along the side. In ancient times people would donate horses to the shrines for good favor; over time this was transferred to a wooden plaque with a picture of a horse, and later still to the various wooden plaques sold today for the same purpose.
Ema are sold for various wishes. Common reasons for buying a plaque are for success in work or on exams, marital bliss, to have children, and health. Some shrines specialize in certain types of these plaques, and the larger shrines may offer more than one. Sales of ema help support the shrine financially.

This is the last of the candle light images I will share. This moment was sweet. The father holding the candle would "zoom" it towards the baby. She thought it was so funny she just kept giggling and laughing.
It's that time of the year - sub-zero temperatures, wind chill, and snow. It's also the time of year for ice fishing, sledding, and when you're 2 1/2, just having fun in the snow.
We went to visit the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a state operated zoo and botanical garden, specializing in native species of the Chihuahuan Desert and New Mexico.

The challenging thing about early blooming Magnolia, like this Magnolia Stellata, is that they're such early bloomers they're often tipped by frost. This lush lovely is from two years ago in the early part of April - and all the first blooming flowers on that tree were indeed wiped out by a frost just a few days later.
Fast forward to now, heading into the last week of January 2015, and we're bundling up and hunkering down for a fierce Nor'easter that's roaring towards us. Looks like it will be the first official blizzard of the new year with high winds and snow fall levels somewhere close to 24 inches. See you after we dig out! :)

having just wound up with my sadhu shoot, i was heading in the direction of the kalighat kali temple where i came across some people distributing some foodies among the homeless people, the street children, beggars and destitutes. walking past them i turned to look back & lo this little girl sprinting !
