Fortunately, from mid-April to early May it is the time that the Dutch icon the Tulips blossoms. The bright colors in red, orange, yellow, white and many combinations ensure beautiful photos. Dutch and foreign visitors love the blossoming tulip fields. From the beginning of May, however, the bulb growers will begin to head the tulip fields. They get the flower of the stem so the energy of the flower goes back into the bulb. These tulip bulbs can then be purchased from the end of September.

For bulbs and tubers, a distinction is made between summer flowering bulbs , such as gladiolus, dahlia, lily and begonia. These are planted in the spring, and spring bloomers, such as the tulip, hyacinth, daffodil, blue grape and crocus, that are planted in the fall. The flowers are removed after flowering on land at the grower so that the bulb can build up food reserves. After all, the larger the bulb, the larger the flowers that you get in the garden or in the vase. The bulbs are cleared about two to three months after the 'head'. They are then dried, cleaned and sorted by size.

The agricultural area in use for bulb cultivation grew by 10.5 thousand hectares (74 percent) in the period 1980-2015. The greatest growth took place between 1990 and 2000, when more than 6,000 hectares of bulb cultivation were added. In the following period, the total area increased by 2 300 hectares. With this, the area of ​​bulb cultivation in 2015, with almost 25 thousand hectares, reached the largest area ever.

Bulbs are also grown on sandy clay soils just behind the dunes on the islands of Voorne in South Holland and on Goeree-Overflakkee .

When you think of tulips, you think of the Netherlands. Yet these plants are originally from Central Asia. The Turks already cultivated these bulbs for the Dutch. When the first tulip bulbs were planted in the Netherlands at the end of the sixteenth century, it wasn't long before the tulip became famous. Professional growers saw a golden future for the plant and a lively flower bulb trade emerged. The tulip was even seen as a good investment and this led to wild speculations, the so-called tulip wind trade or also called Tulpomanie. Things got out of hand that the government had to intervene: the tulip market collapsed within 24 hours. Not only the tulip but most bulb plants come from far outside the Netherlands. For example, the dahlia comes from Mexico and the amaryllis (Hippeastrum) from South America. The freesia and the calla (Zantedeschia) are from South Africa again.

If you cycle along the bulb fields on Goeree-Overflakkee during the flowering period, you may well see people walking among the flowers. They are selecting, flowers that have a different color, a spot or a disease are then removed. If the tulips are in full bloom, it is important to remove the flowers as soon as possible to promote the growth of the bulb.

The bulb fields in the Netherlands have been the calling card of the Bulb Region for over 400 years. The flower season starts in 2021 on Saturday, March 20 and lasts until Sunday, May 9.
Every spring, many visitors from all over the world come to enjoy the color palette of the blooming tulip fields. Popular are the world famous Keukenhof Flower Park and the annual Flower Parade Bollenstreek, but there are also many nice small-scale flower attractions and events to visit.

The hyacinth fields turn to color in Bollenstreek from the beginning of April to End April. Main colors are white, purple and pink in the hyacinth fields. During the flowering period of the hyacinths, the Bollenstreek is also extra fragrant in addition to colorful. The smell of the hyacinths can then be smelled throughout the region. A bulb field is a field on which bulbous plants (initially only tulips ) are grown commercially. After the bulbs have blossomed in the spring, the (usually virus-sick) bulbs and wandering (of other varieties) are searched for and removed. Although it takes energy to flower, it is necessary to find the diseased bulbs. Then the bulbs are mechanically headed . The bulbs are then harvested and exported all over the world, where the buyers plant them in their own garden .
Today, the bulbs are grown on beds with nets in the ground, which makes them easy to harvest.
Not the old traditional windmills here, but tall, modern turbines on land that is also still quite new. Less than a century ago this vast area was reclaimed from the sea, and up to this day it still forms the world's largest artificial island: Flevopolder.

Bulb cultivation in the province of Drenthe, Flevoland and Overijssel has grown considerably. The tulip is still the most widely grown bulb. Tulips are found on almost half of all flower bulb fields.
