The summer flowering lilies and gladiolus also more in the east of the Netherlands. North Holland is by far the most important province for the production of flower bulbs. The production area in the Netherlands has grown strongly in recent decades. From 10,000 hectares in 1960 to more than 23,500 hectares in 2010. This is offset by a decrease in the number of growers. There were 13,000 bulb growers in the sixties, of which only 1,200 are left in 2010. The area per company has therefore risen. This is only due to far-reaching professionalization, scaling-up and mechanization that have taken place during cultivation. The flower bulb sector employs ± 16,000 people. In addition, the seasonal employees are called upon every year in the labor-intensive summer, autumn and winter months.
These tulips are growing on what was still the bottom of an inland sea less than 100 years ago. The area was reclaimed from the sea, halfway through the 20th century, to form the world's largest artificial island: Flevopolder. There are cities, small towns and nature areas to be found, and lots of fertile agricultural land on which tulip bulbs are cultivated in huge numbers.

The striking colors of the flowering tulip bulbs are a typical sight in Holland during the spring. The bright red, pink and yellow colors are overwhelmingly beautiful and are a must see, or should we say, a must experience!
From the end of March until the second week of May the flowers in the bulb fields bloom. It goes without saying that the exact period depends on the weather. Generally speaking, the best time is the second half of April.

A bulb field is a field on which bulbous plants (initially only tulips ) are grown commercially. In the fall, the bulbs are planted again, after which straw is spread and run on the land in order to protect the bulbs from frost. After the bulbs have blossomed in the spring, the (usually virus-sick) bulbs and wandering (of other varieties) are selected and removed. Although it takes energy to flower, it is necessary to find the diseased bulbs. Then the bulbs are mechanically headed . The bulbs are then harvested and exported all over the world, where the buyers plant them in their own garden .

The Netherlands is an important supplier of tulips and tulip bulbs, more than 80% of all tulips sold worldwide come from the Netherlands. Tulip bulb cultivation is also an important sector on Goeree-Overflakkee, the island supplies 7% of all Dutch tulip bulbs. The soil on the island is very suitable for growing the colorful flowers. Tulip bulbs are usually planted in October and November. The flowering period is from March to April.

The Tulip was originally a wild flower, growing in Central Asia. It was first cultivated by the Turks as early as 1000 AD, The flower was introduced in Western Europe and the Netherlands in the 17th century by Carolus Clusius, a famous biologist from Vienna. In the 1590s he became the director of the Hortus Botanicus, the oldest botanical garden of Europe, in Leiden. He was hired by the University of Leiden to research medicinal plants and, while doing so, he received some bulbs from his friend, Ogier de Busbecq, the Ambassador to Constantinople (presently Istanbul). He had seen the beautiful flower called the tulip, after the Turkish word for turban, growing in the palace gardens and sent a few to Clusius for his garden in Leiden. He planted them and this was the beginning of the amazing bulb fields we see today.

De tulp was oorspronkelijk een wilde bloem, groeiend in Centraal-Azië. Eerst werd gecultiveerd door de Turken al in 1000 AD, De bloem is ingevoerd in West-Europa en Nederland in de 17de eeuw door Carolus Clusius, een bekende bioloog uit Wenen. In 1590 was hij directeur van de Hortus Botanicus, de oudste botanische tuin van Europa in Leiden. Hij was ingehuurd door de Universiteit van Leiden om onderzoek te doen in geneeskrachtige planten. Van zijn vriend, Ogier de Busbecq, de ambassadeur in Constantinopel (het huidige Istanbul) kreeg hij bollen opgestuurd. Zijn vriend had gezien hoe mooi deze bloem, genoemd tulp naar het Turkse woord voor tulband, bloeide in de tuienen van het paleis en stuurde een paar naar Clusius voor zijn tuin in Leiden. Hij plantte ze en dit was het begin van de prachtige bollenvelden die we vandaag de dag zien.

The Netherlands is famous for its cultivated tulips and is one of the most important export countries for tulips and tulip bulbs. Traditionally, in the spring in the Keukenhof in Lisse, an exhibition is made of millions of tulips, which is mainly visited by tourists . In addition, many tourists come to watch the tulip fields. The best known are the more traditional fields along the dunes of South Holland and the West Frisian polders. However, the majority of the tulips can be found in Flevoland, in particular in the Noordoostpolder (over 2,000 hectares). Tulip fields can also be found in the Noordelijk Zandgebied of Noord-Holland (around Breezand , Anna Paulowna and Julianadorp ) and on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee .
Zuid-Holland -
Flower bulbs are planted in October or November . Preference is given to calcareous soil, which does not remain wet for too long. The bulbs grow well in both sun and partial shade . Flower bulbs can be planted with a bulb planter . The bulb is planted at a depth of about three times the diameter of the bulb. After flowering, many bulbs are harvested from mid-June, dried and stored until the next planting season. An alternative is to let the plants naturalize.
Dutch bulbfields
The largest contiguous flower bulb area in the Netherlands can be found in the head of North Holland , roughly between Den Oever, Den Helder, Schagen and Medemblik. The dune area in the north of the country offers the perfect type of soil for bulbs, so you will find other bulb fields in many other places. From the end of March you can normally view bulbs, but it depends on the weather what the optimal time is. If it is a warm year or suddenly warms up quickly, the bulbs can quickly blossom. To avoid disappointments, it is best to check regularly . We kept our finger on the pulse at the Tourist Office of Castricum. We slept at a weekend in a B & B at the end of April and viewed the fields by bike. Personally, I thought this was the best time; the tulips were blooming and we also saw enough hyacinths and some blue grapes .

Flower bulb growers in the Netherlands are united in the Royal General Association for Flower Bulb Culture ( KAVB ), which represents the interests of this group of business colleagues. The wholesale companies in the flower bulb sector are represented by Anthos , Royal Trade Union for Tree Nursery and Bulb products. In addition to representing interests at home, this organization is also active abroad by removing trade barriers that can impede the sale of the products, or by further developing markets in cooperation with iBulb and importers' organizations.
Tonight we went to see the bulbfields in our neighbourhood. This is very close to our house. Like every year we love the sight of these tulips fields.
