Tonight we went to see the bulbfields in our neighbourhood. This is very close to our house. Like every year we love the sight of these tulips fields.

Bulb cultivation is the branch of horticulture that grows bulbous , tuberous and rhizome crops for ornamental gardens , green areas and exports. The bulb growers grow a wide variety of crops.

If one culture is inextricably linked to the province of South Holland, it is flower bulb cultivation. Although it did not originate, and the province is no longer the largest cultivation area in terms of area, the province plays a prominent role in the history of the flower bulb.

At Goeree-Overflakkee, approximately 450 hectares of arable land are used for bulb cultivation. Cultivation once started small in and around Ouddorp. In the 1950s, gladiolus cultivation made its appearance on the island. From the 1960s, the cultivation of tulip bulbs gradually replaced gladiolus cultivation. The brilliant result now colors the landscape every year.
The tulips on the Flakke fields are not interesting to the grower because of the flower, but because of the bulb. The bulbs go to greenhouses in Rijnsburg and West Friesland, for example, where they are flowered. Then, just before Christmas, they are marketed as tulips.

In the second half of the sixteenth century, flower bulbs came in the attention of the wealthy and scientists in the Low Countries. The botanist Carolus Clusius plays a central role in the distribution of tulips in particular. However, he is not the only one who imports tulips into our regions. Clusius maintains contact with countless friends, and from the correspondence of some of them we can see that there was plenty of exchanges. Tulips were an essential part of that barter.

One can't travel through Holland in the spring without spotting what could quite possibly be the national flower. When the sun rises during Spring in the Netherlands, millions of eager bulbs also rise for the occasion. Acres upon endless acres of the most brilliantly exquisite tulips transform dozens of ordinary fields into a colorful kaleidoscope of hues.
Holland is one of the world's leading exporters of the exotic flower. Nearly 3 billion tulips are grown every year, and two-thirds of them are exported.
Farmers plant the bulbs in late October and early November, and then they are harvested in May.
Late April and early May are the most beautiful blooming tulip fields.
Tulpentijd in de Noordoostpolder
Bij tulpenvelden denken we vooral aan de Bollenstreek, maar de meeste tulpen van heel Nederland staan tegenwoordig in de Noordoostpolder (ruim 2000 hectare). Ieder jaar wordt er een tulpenroute uitgezet als onderdeel van het www.tulpenfestival.nl. Dit jaar van 16 april tot en met 8 mei.
Stel je eens voor... rechte polderwegen, rechte kavels, rechte sloten rondom de kavels, aan de rand van de wegen staan bomen. Er zitten al knoppen aan de bomen, want het is lente. En als je langs de bomen kijkt, over de akkers heen, zie je tulpen. Rood, geel, paars, roze, oranje, enz.
Deze foto is noordwestelijk van Emmeloord in de Noordoostpolder genomen. Daar liggen de meeste tulpenvelden en daar is ook de tulpenroute uitgezet.
Deze foto is genomen in de tulpenshowtuin naast het tulpeninformatiecentrum direct aan de tulpenroute bij het dorpje Creil in de Noordoostpolder (Flevoland).

The Netherlands is an important supplier of tulips and tulip bulbs, more than 80% of all tulips sold worldwide come from the Netherlands. Tulip bulb cultivation is also an important sector at Goeree-Overflakkee, the island supplies 7% of all Dutch tulip bulbs. The soil on the island is very suitable for growing the colorful flowers. Tulip bulbs are usually planted in October and November. The flowering period runs from March to April.

The favorable climate and great craftsmanship ensured that flower bulb cultivation continued to develop in the Netherlands. New shapes and colors were always grown. The frantic attempts of Dutch growers to grow the 'black tulip' are very appealing. With tulips like 'Queen of Night' and 'Black Parrot' they are close to their goal. Important factors for the successful cultivation of flower bulbs have always been research, craftsmanship, information and knowledge exchange. That this has paid off may be clear. The current range of flower bulbs in the Netherlands consists of flowers in almost every conceivable scent, color and shape. Flower bulbs and flowers, the trademark of the Netherlands, find their way to countless destinations around the world every year.

The colorful tulip fields on Goeree-Overflakkee have become a rural attraction. Visitors come from all over the Netherlands to take photos of the flowers. Almost one in ten tulips sold in the Netherlands comes from the South Holland island. The big advantage is that, unlike Keukenhof, you don't have to pay a cent for it.
On a bike trip around Hoofddorp we cycled through orchards and the bulbfields. The weather was unexpectedly nice and we toured for more than 3 hours. I have been taking pictures with the polaroid sx-70 and the Holga.

The bulbfields are late this year because of the cold winter. The tulips are not yet blooming, but the daffodils are doing their utmost to please the tourists and the many photographers who are strolling around in the fields...

In view of the corona crisis tourists were discouraged by the government to visit the bulbfields.
So an ideal situation for me because I live in Hillegom in the heart of the bulbfields.
Dutch landscapes -

For bulbs and tubers, a distinction is made between summer flowering bulbs , such as gladiolus, dahlia, lily and begonia. These are planted in the spring, and spring bloomers, such as the tulip, hyacinth, daffodil, blue grape and crocus, that are planted in the fall. The flowers are removed after flowering on land at the grower so that the bulb can build up food reserves. After all, the larger the bulb, the larger the flowers that you get in the garden or in the vase. The bulbs are cleared about two to three months after the 'head'. They are then dried, cleaned and sorted by size.

The agricultural area in use for bulb cultivation grew by 10.5 thousand hectares (74 percent) in the period 1980-2015. The greatest growth took place between 1990 and 2000, when more than 6,000 hectares of bulb cultivation were added. In the following period, the total area increased by 2 300 hectares. With this, the area of ​​bulb cultivation in 2015, with almost 25 thousand hectares, reached the largest area ever.
