Pill bugs are not native to the Sonora desert but can be found in moist environments. The desert is a dry and arid place, so these little bugs can be found in denser forested areas and rotting wood. They use plant matter to survive due to the need of a moisture but cause no harm.
this was the weirdest thing i've seen in a long time. it looked like a spider but it swam underwater in one of the moats around the summer palace. anybody know what it is?
This bug is commonly called the Wheel Bug and is classified as an "Assassin Bug." It will pierce its victim and inject a paralyzing agent that will turn their insides to goo. It is said their bite is much more painful than a sting of a hornet, but luckily they don't usually bite humans (although, like most creatures, it certainly can happen).
I found this guy outside on our porch and had to grab a shot of him.
P.S. Este modelo já está vendido =)

The ornamental gardens had an accompanying insectarium. This is just a small handfull of the many bugs on display. Though they did have live specimens, and Fran was particularly taken with the bees, they were far outnumbered by those who were not so fortunate and now lie behind glass, pinned to a board.
Leptoglossus oppositus; a leaf-footed bug. There are nymphs of this species here. Lots of the leaf-foots look alike, but these guys are pretty easy to ID because whereas most species have a line across the back, these guys have three small dots.

I felt like a baleen whale this morning, feeding on krill, as I walked in Ashbridges Bay Park and on the boardwalk. I have never, ever, seen so many bugs. Swarms of them, clouds of them. Pity the poor joggers; no fun for them on their morning runs.
Didn't get one photo this morning that didn't have a bug in it, or on the lens.
