Grain Silo or Buffer Depot. The Grain Silo is one of
sixteen such silos erected by the government during the Second World
War to stockpile a strategic store of grain. Each store had a
capacity of 5,000 tons (5,080 tonnes). The silo is steel framed
with a central 80 ft (24.4m) tall tower which houses machinery and
drying plant. To either side are two wings which house six pairs of
62 ft (18.8m) high reinforced silos. Characteristically the silo was
formerly served by a railway line, the now dismantled Stafford to
Wellington line. The silo is in use and is in good condition,
although the two side wings appear to have been reclad.
In the western side of the yard surrounding the silo is a long single
-storey shed with brick gable walls, this is clad in corrugated
asbestos sheeting. It is similar in form to other wartime Buffer
Depot buildings. Also in the yard is a derelict Air Ministry
pattern hut, this may be in secondary position.
