BSA 650cc Lightning, in sparkling condition.
First registered in June 1973.
With that iconic front drum brake vent.
The owner had left the keys in it.
Found this BSA out in the avenues...really came out of the blue! only an aficionado or an old timer would recognize it and appreciate. It's like a Triumph Bonneville and you almost expect to see Steve McQueen walking it up to it and riding away with it.

The 1948 BSA Bantam was a lightweight, two-stroke motorcycle based on the pre-war German DKW RT 125 design, which BSA acquired as war reparations. Launched as the D1 model, it featured a 123cc engine, 3-speed gearbox, and a rigid frame, becoming an instant commercial success in post-war Britain. BSA made significant changes to the German design, such as reversing the engine layout and adapting it to British standards, which made it perfect for new riders and a commercial success.
This 1948 BSA Bantam is on display at the Cotswold Motoring Museum.

sculptor: Donald De Lue, 1964, Bronze
architect: William Henry Deacy
cast: Modern Art Foundry, New York.
dedicated: November 7, 1964
Senate majority leader, Lyndon B. Johnson, introduced the measure to establish the the B.S.A. memorial in 1959, the 50th anniversary year of Scouting. The memorial is located at the site of the first National Scout Jamboree (1937). It was accepted upon dedicated by Associate Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark, on his 50th anniversary of becoming an Eagle Scout.
The sculptural group consists of three figures, all of which are depicted striding forward. They are symbolic of the idea of inspiring trough great and noble forces. In the center is the Boy Scout, with a walking stick in his left hand, flanked by two allegorical figures. They represent "American Manhood and Womanhood and the ideals they will pass onto the youth." To the Scout's right is the male figure, who carries in drapery, a helmet (masculinity) and a live oak branch (peace and strength). To the left is the female deity who holds an illuminated, gold, torch in her left hand.
