This is the classic broken-wing distraction display that Killdeer plovers use to draw attention away from their nests when disturbed. It catches the eye of the intruder, and when the bird is pursued, it gets up, runs in a direction opposite the nest, only to squat and re-display its broken wing distraction. Eventually the potential threat is far enough away from the nest and eggs, and the bird flies away and circles back to the nest area.

Commissioned work for the release of Procreate 1.6 ipad application; this piece needed to have a loose, painterly feel to it.

I just thought it would be cool to have a disillusioned robot sitting on the floor eating ice cream over a broken heart! Oh yeah 2 of those cats are mine... :)

Broken Glass. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Thought I'd venture out into our 'winter wonderland'... We didn't actually get snow but it did freeze a little bit. There was a layer of ice on top of the recycle bin (it collects water whenever it rains). When I lifted it, the water sloshed, scared me, I dropped the lid and the ice broke into pieces...

Our Daily Challenge: pieces

One of the last attempts to build paths through Parfrey's Glen. Mother nature has other ideas. This path looked like it was pretty old, but quite broken due to the dynamic nature of the landscape here and the continual floods. They gave up in the end thankfully. A path through here would ruin the place.

Take these broken wings, and learn to fly again learn to live so free.

Red Kite (Milvus milvus) with a few tatty feathers.

This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail.

Such joy to see these wild birds in flight.

Baby, don't understand

Why we can't just live long to each other's hands

This time might be the last, I fear

Unless I make it all too clear

I need you so, ohhhh...

Take these broken wings

And learn to fly again, learn to live free

When we hear the voices sing

The book of love will open up and let us in

Take these broken wings...

Baby, I think tonight

We can take what is wrong and make it right

Baby, it's all I know

That you're half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole

I need you so, ohhhh...

So take these broken wings

And learn to fly again, learn to live free

When we hear the voices sing

The book of love will open up and let us in

Yeah, let us in

Let us in!

Baby, it's all I know

That you're half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

Yeah, yeah!

So take these broken wings

And learn to fly again, learn to live so free

When we hear the voices sing

The book of love will open up and let us in

Take these broken wings

You've got to learn to fly, learn to live and love so free

When we hear the voices sing

The book of love will open up for us and let us in

A shot from last June, when there was more snow on the mountain than now. That will change very soon, though.

He wants to pick up these broken pieces

and glue them back together

He wants to know these wounds and scars

and heal it altogether

And these are the skills,

that she has been trying to master

For all the years,

that was what mattered.

Little did she know,

with every scar cut open -

another was being stitched back together.

Normally my pictures aren't happy but this one is dripping with grief and heartbreak. My dog has been missing for a week and a half now and I'm terrified we won't ever know what happened to her. I feel like part of me is missing and I grieve for her brother who is visibly upset at her absence. I also created this image in the midst of the 2020 Presidential election and I wanted to convey the brokenness of the country.

My camera bag strap broke while I was picking it up and it fell back down -- not a bad fall. So I was surprised, and obviously horrified, when I opened it to find that my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 had busted. The portion with the lens mount separated from the main body just before the zoom ring started. You can see the portion that snapped. I rushed home and found that a Nikon repair center was only about 5 miles away. So I drove over and showed it to the rather sympathetic gentleman. He said that these new lens are great but not built as solid. He then pulled out a tray with another customer’s lens that looked exactly the same as mine.

As to repair time and cost: 4-5 weeks and around $450. Why so long? The spare parts are few and far between right now due to it being a new lens type. Why so expensive when it was just that little connection that snapped? Well, the broken part is essentially the backbone for the whole lens. Therefore the entire lens will need to be taken appart and reassembled. Super.

Obviously I am going to get a new bag and obviously I am going to be more careful. The 24-70 was attached to my D700 at the time so there was probably some torquing that occurred. Also, just to note, I had an 80-200 f/2.8 AFD in same bag. No problems with it.

UPDATE: Fixed! Just picked it up today (11/8/08). Seems to be working quite nicely. Thanks Nikon Repair Guy! Feels like new and acts like new. Quite a nice job.

UPDATE: about 8 years later (3/2017) I have finally replaced this lens. I got the new VR model and excited to see how it performs. My old trusty 24-70mm is really beaten to hell at this point. Threading for the filters cracked off, the rubber grip is out of place, the hood long ago broke (while on a 2.5km sledding run in Switzerland). Obviously I loved that lens!

I guess this is what comes from overuse!

I love the Mary statues you find everywhere here. This one has a slightly sad broken neon halo. Behind her is Quin Abbey, which started life as a fortress, got flattened and burnt out, and was rebuilt for the Franciscans.

Fun little camera. Too bad it doesn't really work. It's offically a shelf ornament now.

Ok. After some color and concept shots another artwork. Found this after my rain walk a few days ago. Still very dry earth. All broken up. The countrymen will get problems this year....

Broken type. After ordering a bunch of letters from the manufaturers, the fools forgot to pack them properly to they travelled half way around the world unprotected. This was the result. It broke my heart....

....even broken typ is still beautiful!

Hi Flickr!

I will be away from my beloved Flickr.com community for a little while as my Aunt has passed. My family is very close so this has not been easy for us.

But, my Aunt lived a long life full of joy and freedom. And, because I am a believer I know she is in a better place. So, instead of dwelling on the pain associated with the loss of a loved one I choose to celebrate the memories and the life she led.

And, in a strange way this image represents both death and life to me. Despite the harsh break across its veins that will adversely effect the the top half of the leaf, the leaf is bigger than the break and the plant will live on being nourished by the power of sun. And for me the loss of a loved one is the same. Despite the harsh break that cuts across the veins in our hearts, we will be nourished by the power of The Son of God and will go on to blossom and mature.

I'm going to miss you and look forward to retuning in several days to view, admire and be inspired by all of your wonderful work. I'll talk with you shortly, be blessed!
