Built during the early 1100s, the parochial church of the village of Merlévenez features a very interesting set of so-called “broken” or “pointy” arches in the nave, instead of the more traditional barrel arches. Contrary to what some internet sites claim, the “broken” arch was not invented by the Cistercians. It is a pure product of Cluniac architectural research, therefore invented by the mainstream Benedictines and not by their Cistercian offshoot. It is probably not the Cistercians that brought that shape to Brittany and built this church, as all those examples supplied by such web sites of Cistercians foundations using that same pointy arch date from 1130 at the earliest, when Merlévenez was probably almost completed already. Those web sites mistake the effect for the cause: it is indeed likely that the Cistercians found their own inspiration in Merlévenez, instead of having inspired it, or else (and perhaps more likely) they simply found that inspiration in Cluny.

In addition to this architectural feature, this church also offers some very interesting sculpted and historied capitals that have interestingly archaic characteristics, even though one must of course also account for the difficulty inherent in sculpting granite.

Naive, archaic human faces on capitals in the nave.

Spent a weekend at my brothers river home and had fun finding and taking pics of broken river glass.

I broke my favorite cup today. The handle was already missing and after a tumble off the counter today, there are several more pieces missing. It was a gift from someone I love, and even in it's brokenness, it is still a treasure to me. No longer useable in it's original form, but still lovely in another purpose.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Two broken street lamps were enough to let the full moon do it's work on these beach huts. Another Brighton cliché with a slight twist.

Fell with the lens head down on a flat hard tile :( The UV filter is gone. The lens seems to be okay.. though it makes a little noise while focussing.

And the camera seems to be working with no issues.

Still needs to figure out how best to get rid of the filter or atleast the glass remains. (the threads seems to have been damaged.. so it doesnt open the normal way)

Nice day of shoot came to this sad end. Saving grace was this shot (taken from my 55-200) proving that my camera is still doing good :)

In another news kartik deprived Sachin Tendulkar of another hundred! :(

Update 1: The lens looks alright :) I removed the broken glass pieces using a tong. The filter ring remains.

Update 2: Got the filter ring removed at a nikon stall in photofair 2010, mumbai. took a lot of hammering! this lens is sturdy!!

Broken shells fascinate me. Their intricate designs, their "bones," they way they capture and reflect light. They are what I look for on our beach trips. We don't have many "souvenirs" of our trips other than rocks and shells and photos. I love the interior glow to these tiny shells on a light box.

Saw this beautiful wooden carving in a garden on my way to Hotel.

At first sight, it looked as it was made in cement but later found out it was carved on a tree trunk.

An amazing skill to be appreciated and learned. Kudos to the person who carved it :)

Broken Beach, Pasih Uug, Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia

Broken Beach is a scenic coastal formation on the southwestern edge of Nusa Penida. The spot is marked by a hilly rock arch, which is the star landmark of the area. Also known by its local name, Pasih Uug, it's a great spot for travel photographers and anyone who wants to enjoy stunning panoramic views.

She's so beautifully broken

Shaped by the wind

Dangerously twisted

Here I go again

I see the way she cast her spell

It's like drowning in moonlight

I watch her move from star to star

And I wonder why, why it feels so right

She's so beautifully broken

You can barely see the flaw

Especially from a distance

Which is always how I fall

Why do I fall for the dangerous ones?

The ones that never learned to let go

And why do I lie to myself

And pretend that I can break her

When she's already been so

Beautifully broken

Thought I'd venture out into our 'winter wonderland'... We didn't actually get snow but it did freeze a little bit. There was a layer of ice on top of the recycle bin (it collects water whenever it rains). When I lifted it, the water sloshed, scared me, I dropped the lid and the ice broke into pieces...

Named: "Al-Wuseil".

First flown as an A330-203 with the Airbus test registration F-WWKU, this aircraft was delivered to Qatar Airways as A7-ACD at the end of Mar-03. It was sold to Doha Leasing (A330) Ltd on delivery and leased back to Qatar Airways.

It was converted to A330-202 standard in Sep-04 to bring it in line with the rest of the Qatar A330-200 fleet. It was returned to the lessor in May-18 and sold to Wilmington Trust SP Services (Dublin) Ltd as EI-GGP in Jun-18.

The aircraft was leased to Air Italy (Italy) a few days later. Air Italy ceased operations on 11-Feb-20, just at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic (Italy suffered very badly early on).

It was returned to the lessor and stored at Doha, Qatar. The aircraft was 'leased' to Qatar Airways as A7-ACR in Nov-20, although it never entered service. It was ferried to Teruel, Spain in Dec-20 and permanently retired. It was broken up at Teruel in Sep-21. Updated 01-Apr-24.

In Kerry, Ireland. Rory leaves tomorrow, so I won't have a model anymore. I love walking the cliffs here, smelling the air (which always has a wonderfully smoky smell), and looking out at the sea (which is always this unbelievably deep dark royal blue that you can't find anywhere else but in Ireland). Ever since I was a little girl I've felt that some part of my brain--a part that is usually asleep--stirs into life when I am in Ireland. It is where I am happiest. It is where I am most at peace, and this is something that is especially important, as my brain is constantly buzzing with worries and thoughts that never seem to slow down. When I'm here, I can sit and I can watch. I can read and I can make toast without counting the calories. I can do things I loved when I was a little girl and didn't have quite as many things to worry about--I can play with a dog on a freezing cold beach, or take a walk without a cellphone in my hands, or listen to the rain outside as I watch the hours of Simpsons that come on on Sky One every evening. It's all the small things--going to Tesco and picking out denny's sausages, brennan's bread (or pat's pan, if I'm farther up north), milky bar chocolate bars (their wrappers still have the little cowboy with spectacles printed on it, like when I was younger). My mom moved from Ireland to marry my dad, and my grandparents had never been to America until they flew there for her wedding. It's strange; I think of Ireland as my true home, and yet I would never have been born if my mom hadn't left it.

My camera bag strap broke while I was picking it up and it fell back down -- not a bad fall. So I was surprised, and obviously horrified, when I opened it to find that my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 had busted. The portion with the lens mount separated from the main body just before the zoom ring started. You can see the portion that snapped. I rushed home and found that a Nikon repair center was only about 5 miles away. So I drove over and showed it to the rather sympathetic gentleman. He said that these new lens are great but not built as solid. He then pulled out a tray with another customer’s lens that looked exactly the same as mine.

As to repair time and cost: 4-5 weeks and around $450. Why so long? The spare parts are few and far between right now due to it being a new lens type. Why so expensive when it was just that little connection that snapped? Well, the broken part is essentially the backbone for the whole lens. Therefore the entire lens will need to be taken appart and reassembled. Super.

Obviously I am going to get a new bag and obviously I am going to be more careful. The 24-70 was attached to my D700 at the time so there was probably some torquing that occurred. Also, just to note, I had an 80-200 f/2.8 AFD in same bag. No problems with it.

UPDATE: Fixed! Just picked it up today (11/8/08). Seems to be working quite nicely. Thanks Nikon Repair Guy! Feels like new and acts like new. Quite a nice job.

UPDATE: about 8 years later (3/2017) I have finally replaced this lens. I got the new VR model and excited to see how it performs. My old trusty 24-70mm is really beaten to hell at this point. Threading for the filters cracked off, the rubber grip is out of place, the hood long ago broke (while on a 2.5km sledding run in Switzerland). Obviously I loved that lens!
