Along the Old Town trail in the wetlands on the border of Forest Grove, Oregon. (Washington County).
I set the moth trap last night after my walk and was hoping to get a few new moths what I got was a whole different story. The trap was surrounded by moths all over the summer house walls inside the summer house and the trap was overflowing and i nearly ran out of specimen pots to collect all of them. I spent about 4 hours identifying and counting all the moths and these are some of the images i took those which had to be photographed in less than ideal locations I haven't included. All the moths I caught were released alive and in good condition.
Among the many things we learned during the tour of the Glidden homestead was the story of Brindle, the Glidden's cow but first a little background is in order.
A little something from wikipedia on Brindle:
"Brindle is a coat coloring pattern in animals, particularly dogs, cattle, guinea pigs, and, rarely, horses. It is sometimes described as "tiger-striped", although the brindle pattern is more subtle than that of a tiger's coat."
After a little research I soon determined that in simple terms, a brindle colored cow is the result of certain genetics but is not necessarily a specific breed. We really dont know much about the pedigree of the Glidden cow but we do know her name was Brindle. I cant help but assume she was such a cow as described above but we may never know.
What we do know is Brindle was somewhat of an independent sort who enjoyed her freedom to roam anywhere she pleased. Of course for the owners of a cow like the Gliddens this was not satisfactory, because its hard to milk the cow when the cow cant be found.
Now Glidden had tried other fencing materials but Brindle was a notorious fence buster and once the idea of barbed wire had entered Joseph's mind, he quickly set to make a fence that would put an end to Brindle's roaming.
So when he had made enough wire, Glidden strung it up around the cow yard. Brindle could do nothing but stand there and stare at it. She was defeated, and soon after the barbed wire craze began.
Below is a link to a video I took of the tour. The video like a movie preview, is only partial view of the actual tour. I think it best to encourage folks to go themselves rather than give away the story so to speak, but you will see a few of the rooms and a view inside the Glidden Barn.
