Though it's only an hour or so north of us, depending on traffic, we've only ever gone to Illinois Beach State Park one other time in the 13 years we've lived in Chicagoland, when we spent a couple of hours on a weekend afternoon in 2011 walking a little trail. There was a lot more beach at Illinois Beach back then. As I've mentioned a few times, Lake Michigan has risen about four feet since then and is now very near its all-time recorded high (at least since about 1850). Almost all the Lake Michigan beaches are now underwater, and the waves run right up to the lakeside forests.
This particular beach at the North Unit of Illinois Beach State Park has a few feet of sand, but its mostly covered over with cobbles about the size of a person's fist. For some reason, there are a bunch of bricks scattered among the rocks. I don't know where those come from. There's a small pile of bricks in the trees off to the left that made me wonder if there'd been a structure here of some sort at one time.
