Around the neighborhood

Groningen, The Netherlands

I have various displays of old Welsh bricks dotted about the garden - this is one of them!

Schitt's Creek has emerged as one of those special TV gems to originate from Canada. Since its release on Netflix, it has rapidly acquired legions of fans the world over. Especially in this age of lockdowns and binge watching, Schitt's Creek is a wonderful escape.

While rewatching all 6 seasons, my wife (Lucie Filteau), and I both recognized the creative potential to capture Schitt's Creek in Lego bricks! "Bricks Creek" is our Lego tribute to Dan and Eugene Levy's comedy and story-telling genius.

This project has taken a little over 4 months of recreational building in our spare time. Other than large quantities of brown tiles and a few other parts, we were able to build these creations directly from our collection. Custom stickers were made using reference photos and screen captures, illustrated in software and printed on to self-adhesive sticker sheets.

Brick's Creek consists of the following:

1. Motel - approx. 4000 pcs

2. Cafe Tropical - approx. 2500 pcs

3. Rose Apothecary - approx. 2500 pcs

4. 1978 Lincoln Continental

5. Schitt's Creek "Welcome" sign

Each building is fitted with detailed interiors which can be easily removed. Some of these details are "Easter eggs" such as the sink broken by Alexis and Ted in Rose Apothecary!

Lastly, we painstakingly chose mini-figure "cast" members by compositing various torsos, legs, hair, etc. to make each distinctive character. All use standard mini-figure parts and decoration with the exception of Eugene Levy's Johnny Rose character. Hi mini-figure benefited from white washing of his hair and extra painted eyebrow detail for perfect look.

We loved this collaborative build project and are happy to share it publicly in time for the 2020 Emmy Awards. Schitt's Creek is nominated for no less than 15 awards and we are confident that it will receive the recognition and accolades it deserves!

Brick Lane East London

Glass and otherwise. I think this is the classic "Chicago Common" brick. Forest Park.

Wilhelm von Humboldt state school in Nordhausen. This striking red brick building was erected in 1861.

Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Karl Ferdinand von Humboldt (1767-1835) was a Prussian philosopher, linguist, government functionary, diplomat, and founder of the Humboldt University of Berlin, which was named after him in 1949 (and also after his younger brother, Alexander von Humboldt, a naturalist). He was the architect of the Humboldtian education ideal, which was used from the beginning in Prussia as a model for its system of public education, as well as in the United States and Japan.

17th century brickwork, Schoorl.

While the bricks are original, the mortar is all new as the whole building was moved several meters in the early 20th century.

Argus C3 - Appropriately nicknamed the "Brick". Made in the USA. Found this one beside the QEW (Jordan Station) "antique" market. Kind of took pity on it as it was in a large plastic tub together with all kinds of other less desirable cameras.

The bricks on the right are definatly approaching middle age . I know I got wider then ! 364/51

The impact of age is clear on this very old brick wall. Modern bricks are extremely regular but these bricks were vary varied in size. Time has then changed the faces differentially. This wall could define the term character.
