Every Chinese Doctor I have been to says that I have cold energy in my stomach. So I am always willing to try anything to get rid of this cold energy. Rather than living a healthy life of constant physical activity, restricted computer use, and all the other modern things that we do to make us unbalanced creatures - I chose to put myself through ancient practices - like STOMACH FIREBURNING or MOXA (mugwart) steaming!!!!
So the philosophy behind fireburning is that the fire's heat will warm up your stomach - it will start moving the cold energy out and help you restore your yin energy. After 5 times of lighting a fire and putting the fire out on my stomach - I felt so wonderful. In between each fireburning, the doctor massaged my stomach - it's the best feeling in the world. It felt as if he was caressing every part of my large and small intestinal track and giving it lots of love and care. And the best part is that in the end- when the fire burning is done correctly - he takes off the saran wrap, medicine cloth, and starts Doggy Paddling down from the top of my stomach to the very bottom of my intestines - you can HEAR A RIVER of activity going on inside! it's totalllly FREAKY - I could hear a river gurgling - as if he was totally giving me a full plumbing system overhaul!
he said that when performed with the right type of fire shapes, the doggy paddling takes all the released coldness and moves it out.
the whole entire time I focused on using qi gong breathing techniques - because I am super sensitive to energy I could feel the cold air flowing out of the bottom of my feet.
But then for a few min before or after the process - sometimes I feel that I am inadequate as a human being when I do these things because it reminds me of how out of touch I am with my body, the earth, and the stars. So going to the Chinese doctor for me is like a form of rebirth and a bit of self-punishment (for not being healthy when I am living in the states). But then I think - is it only when I travel - when I'm farthest away from everything and everyone that I intimately know - is that the only time I feel that I can take care of myself without feeling guilty? Is it only when I am unreachable that I recover from everyday life in the states - when my family stuff is so far away that it is absolutely out of my control? Then I start thinking that's stupid tricia - peace is where you are - but sometimes I feel that the only way to really extract myself out of my own life is to leave the country and cross an ocean away. I wonder if this is a pattern of modern life now - middle class people overworking and then leaving for a few months every year or few years to prevent burn out and just to re-balance. It certainly has become a pattern in my life - is the amount of traveling we do equivalent to the amount of stress we have at home? sometimes I think so...
well anyways this is seriously the best form of self-punishment - when the doctor tells me that my yin-yang isn't balanced - it actually makes me really excited to become more balanced again. I am always excited for them to say - "ok here your energy is blocked, so that's why your hair is turning white or that's why your bowel movements aren't regular." When they tell me how unbalanced I am, I start thinking about how I can take better care of myself.
AFter fireburning, the doctor told me of all the herbs and foods that I should eat to heal my body. for example, I need to eat more lemon peels. This time the doctor told me that my health was pretty good, but my back and neck is messed up from years of sitting in front of a computer. Plus I haven't been meditating or dancing as much lately :(
So I love this herbal/ancient practice - only in china...only in china. In India I tried going to the medicinal doctor - I actually went to 3 of them because I really wanted to give it a chance - well each on told me that I was too much of a "pita" and they threw my naked body on a slap of hard wood and started dumping herbal oil on me and then the woman rubbed the oil on me forcing my bones into the wood table and I slid around like a dead fish - I tried to grab onto the wood but it was impossible! - may sound wonderful-(hmm hands + oil) BUT NOT!!!!!! it was painful and the worst part was that I didn't feel more balanced afterwards. SO I've decided China is the place for me to go for medicinal care.

Jackson Elementary School divided into three sections of about 140 students to take yoga sessions in their gym from Ben Spellman of Good Vibes Yoga on Wednesday, December 11th. Spellman worked with the classes on breathing techniques as well as how to remain calm and quiet during the yoga lessons.
In today’s hectic lifestyle one of the most fundamental pursuits is
happiness as can be witnessed by our chase of success, most of us
believing that if we can just achieve this thing that will help us to
achieve the next thing and consequently we will be happy. But
happiness is as fleeting as a cloud on a cloudless day. One moment it
is there and the next moment it is gone. It seems that we are seeking
something that is uncertain and trying to cling to it as if it were
certain. In my own experience I have seen that happiness is a
consequence of right living rather than the goal in itself. When we
are happy, we notice that we feel happy because we have done something
good for someone else, or we have done our personal spiritual work and
achieved balance and inner harmony. I believe it is peace of mind
that we are really after in today’s uncertainty and difficulty.
Happiness is in the mind, yet the mind is supported by the body and we
have come to understand that a healthy mind lives in a healthy body.
Our happiness therefore depends on a healthy mind and that healthy
mind also depends on a healthy body. Without physical health, it is
impossible to achieve happiness or peace of mind and without mental
health we cannot be completely healthy.
Health is a positive state, it is not just the absence of a negative
state, not just the absence of disease but a positive state of mind.
Traditional Western medicine has been treating illness only as disease
and not looking at it holistically, so when we feel ill, we attack the
illness with medicine and hope we become healed, however, often the
illness returns as we have not treated it from the perspective of the
mind. Illness is nothing more than an imbalance in the natural
harmony of the body and mind. True healing means restoring that
balance, and true health means keeping it.
Yoga means, “to join”. It is a holistic approach to all aspects of
our lives: physical, mental and spiritual. Yoga views the person as a
whole, a unique combination of body, mind and soul and its techniques
bring and maintain our body-mind-soul harmony.
Asana of the Month
(See attached image)
First, standing in mountain posture. Place the feet together, big
toes touching each other root yourself into the ground. Imagine that
there are roots growing out of your feet into the ground. Growing
from the roots extend your legs taller and tucking in your buttocks,
tucking in your belly, elongate your spine to extend it towards the
sky. Hands are resting next to your body, fingers pointing downwards
towards the floor. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
Open your eyes and find a point to focus on. Shift your weight to
your left leg and raise your right foot up to your inner thigh. Once
you have your balance and you are comfortable in this position, place
your hands in namaste (prayer) – palms together at your heart and then
raising your arms up, relax your shoulders down and open your hands.
Hold the posture for at least one minute increasing to two minutes as
you improve on either side.
This posture tones your legs, increases stability in the entire body,
improves posture and brings a greater balance to the physical, mental
and emotional aspects of our self.
Swara Yoga
The word Swara in Sanskrit, means sound or musical note; it also
means the continuous flow of air through one nostril. Yoga means to
join or 'union', so Swara Yoga is the science which is about the
realisation of cosmic consciousness, through the awareness or
observation, then control or manipulation of the flow of breath in the
nostrils.
Swara yoga is an ancient Tantric science, which involves the
systematic study of the flow of breath through the nostrils in
relation to the phases of the moon, time of day, sun, planets and
seasons. Depending on the physical and mental conditions of the
individual one takes the appropriate action according to these
conditions and relations with the cosmos.
All of us will breathe throughout the day and night through a dominant
nostril and in a normal balanced individual, the dominant nostril will
change about every hour and a half bringing the opposite side of our
body/mind into activity. It is important to become aware of which
nostril is the most active at any given time and then balance the body
through breathing techniques to bring the correct nostril into
activity. The fascinating thing about Swara Yoga is that just by
being aware of the Swara (dominant nostril) in relation to the
environment and activity you are about to perform, one can ensure that
we are breathing through the correct nostril for that activity.
Workshops
Tibetan Heart Yoga (not to be missed - see attached image)
"You cannot enter the door of yoga without kindness and compassion for
others." - Changya 1717 - 1786 - Yoga teacher to the Emperor of China
The workshop reunites the 'outer' methods (working with the physical
postures and breath) with the traditional 'inner' methods (cultivating
the ethical restraints and commitments, meditation, and wisdom) into a
powerful synthesis the ancients called 'royal yoga'.
Bringing together these 'outside' and 'inside' methods, restoring to
yoga the complete set of 'limbs' of Patanjali's eight-limbed
(ashta-anga) practice, combining the physical dimension of yoga with
the spiritual understanding of the interdependence of karma and
emptiness, the workshop is designed to achieve nothing less than the
end of suffering and full enlightenment for the practitioner and the
skills needed to teach others how to reach these goals too.

Weekly Group Meditations
(See attachment) - Please do join us for these weekly group
meditations, all are welcome.
Thoughts.....we all have them, we're all familiar with them, but what
are they? Where do they come from? Are they a product of the mind,
and do they spring forth from your mind, or from elsewhere?
Considering that science has yet to pinpoint the location of the mind,
or what exactly the nature thereof is, these questions remain a bit of
a mystery.
However, have you ever found yourself observing your thoughts?
Suggesting that there is a you apart from the you that is entertaining
the thought? Once we have discovered this, we then learn that with
discipline acquired through practice, that we can control which
thinking patterns we entertain thereby ensuring that we don't allow th
mind to be our master, but rather that we master the mind. We can
then take it a step further, and observe the manner in which our
thoughts are directly responsible for the way in which we experience
the world around us, and even the way that reality unfolds.
This practice is best achieved through meditation, which comes in
various forms. Please join us every Thursday from 19h30, where in a
group dynamic, we explore these matters, and in so doing dendevour to
lead a more conscientious, rewarding and delightful existence.

The inability to fall asleep faster or stay asleep naturally can be both distressing and disorienting. Yet at some point in your life, insomnia simply happens. For some people, it can be short-lived, yet for others; it can be a prolonged and life-threatening issue.
Insomnia is a common sleep problem that results in trouble falling asleep that mainly affects adults that have difficulty falling or staying asleep throughout the night even though the person has the opportunity to sleep. Insomnia usually results in mood disturbances, difficulty concentrating, low energy, fatigue and decreased performance at school or at work.
People with a bad bedtime routine often feel, that their sleep quality is not as satisfying once compared to that of other people.
There are two types of insomnia; acute insomnia and chronic insomnia.
Acute/transient insomnia – Brief disruption of sleep patterns due to life events such as the night before a big interview or exam, or receiving stressful or bad news.
Chronic insomnia – Sleep disruption that lasts at least three months and that happens at least three nights every week.
The Causes of Insomnia may be caused by psychological or physical factors. Chronic insomnia is in many instances caused by underlying medical conditions while acute insomnia is typically a result of recent occurrences or events.
The following can be the cause of insomnia:
Circadian Rhythm Disruption – Extreme cold or heat (the body’s temperature), jet lag, environmental noise, job shift changes, high altitudes.
Hormones – Estrogen shifts during menstruation.
Psychological Problems – psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, depression.
Medical Conditions – stroke, chronic pain, tumors, chronic fatigue syndrome, high blood pressure, heart disease, nervous systems, brain lesions, congestive heart failure, arthritis, angina, hyperthyroidism, acid-reflux, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Parkinson’s, sleep apnea, asthma.
Some types of prescription drugs such as antidepressants and stimulants.
High levels of stress about life. Issues such as work, school, health, and even family or finances can be keeping your thoughts elevated, making you unable to fall asleep. Again, life transitions including death of loved ones or loss of job can bring about insomnia.
Environmental factors such as loud noise, extreme light, bad sleep positions and severe temperatures, whether hot or cold, could make it difficult to get to sleep.
Other factors – pregnancy, sleeping next to a snoring partner, an overactive mind, parasites, medications, medications, media, and technology in the bedroom.
Symptoms of Insomnia
There are several symptoms that could be an indication of sleep disorders though the condition itself could also be an indicator of other underlying medical conditions. The following are the most common symptoms of insomnia:
Difficulty falling asleep at night
Worrying about being able to sleep
Waking up in the night
Gastrointestinal disturbances
Waking up earlier than desired
Difficulty socializing
Feeling tired even after a night of sleep
Tension headaches
Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
Uncoordinated movements and actions
Anxiety, depression, and irritability
Poor focus and concentration
People who have insomnia may also report not being fully refreshed and may not feel fully awake.
They could also feel sleepy and tired throughout their day.
How To Get To Sleep With Insomnia – Sleeping Tips
A number of critical sleep aids steps can be applied to ensure quality of your paradoxical intention sleep, and bring an end to sleep difficulties. One of the best ways to prevent and stop insomnia is adopting good habits. These habits include :
Having a consistent bedtime and wake up time every day including on weekends.
Coming up with a consistent bedtime ritual which may be something like listening to soft music, reading or taking a warm bath.
Have regular activity that requires some exertions – Engage in some exercise such as running or swimming which promote a better night’s sleep.
Make your bedroom as comfortable as possible for your nighttime sleep and use the bed only for sleep and sex, and not for reading your Kindle or working.
Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine and if you must use them, ensure you do not have any for at least 5 hours before bedtime.
Avoid or limit any naps during the day particularly during the late afternoon.
Check with your doctor that your medications are not at fault and remove any that may result in insomnia.
Stick to regular sleep and waking times; these should include your weekends and holidays. Such consistency sets your biological clock and makes your body to naturally adjust. Eventually, you are able to get back to a sleep routine that is regular.
Check that your bedroom is uncluttered, cool, quiet and free from noise. It helps your mind to remain calm and ready for an interrupted sleep.10. An over the counter natural sleep aid can stop the poor sleep and help replace with quality sleep.
Try breathing techniques such as inhale deeply hold your breath for 10 seconds then exhale completely and repeat the process.
What happens after 24 hours of sleep deprivation?
Sleep is important as it keeps your whole-body system in regeneration mode while you rest.
There are several people who may miss a night of sleep due to having to take care of a sick child, study for a test, or work overnight to beat a deadline.
Even though staying up for 24 hours without sleep will be an unpleasant experience, you will likely not experience any significant negative experience on your health.
Nonetheless, missing sleep might still have some side effects. Several studies have shown that not sleeping for up to 24 hours is comparable to having .10 percent alcohol in the blood. This is well above the legal limit for one allowed to drive in most states in the US.
Other effects of sleep deprivation over 24 hours include: drowsiness, increased risk of accidents, irritability, tremors, impaired decision making, increased muscle tension, impaired judgment, reduced hand-eye coordination, altered perception, impaired hearing and vision, and memory deficits. Most of these symptoms will disappear once you get some sleep.
What to do when you can’t fall asleep – Tips To Beat Insomnia
Learning how to sleep better with sleep hygiene helps in improving the quality of your life. If you realize that you are unable to sleep and struggle when hitting the sack, this is what you can do to remedy the situation and stop you feeling tired.
Insomnia usually involves either problems staying asleep at night, falling asleep when you want to, or waking up too early in the middle of the night. The following are some of the things you can do to break these patterns:
Set a wind-down time of about 30 minutes before you head to the bed – during this time you should establish a routine such as dimming the lights, some breathing exercises such as deep breathing or reading a physical book (not kindles).
Shutdown all electronics including tablets, phones, and laptops as the blue light from these devices can mess with the Circadian rhythm in the brain making it difficult to fall asleep.
Have a set time when you go to bed and wake up every day. Even when you have a hard time falling asleep and feel unrested in the morning, you need to have a fixed schedule that you follow religiously even during the weekends. This helps to adjust the circadian rhythm and makes it easier to fall asleep.
Sleeping pills from your doctor can be another option, especially if your sleep issues are becoming severe.
Use mind and body relaxation techniques such as meditation, music, and reading to help you descend quickly into healthy sleep.
Avoid eating and drinking a few hours before you go to bed, don’t eat carbs and start forcing yourself in to this as a routine, this is because your digestive system is put into active mode which then keeps you up for longer.
Choosing a luxury bedding that is soft, smooth and feels luxurious on your skin such as TShirt bedding 100% woven cotton can help you drift away that little bit easier.
Do not force sleep – If you get into bed and find yourself unable to sleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed and find a relaxing activity such as listening to soothing music or reading a book. This helps to reinforce the bed as a place for sleeping rather than wakefulness, which makes it easier for your brain to associate it with sleep.
Muscle relaxation techniques such as a hot bath can help with improving sleep quality and your sleep cycles so you fall asleep quickly.
Can you die from Insomnia?
Death from insomnia is associated with rare genetic conditions and abnormalities that over time results in a progressive illness that could cause one to die of sleep deprivations.
The most common illness that can cause death by sleep deprivation is Fatal Familial Insomnia, a genetic illness in which a person loses the capacity for deep sleep, lapses into dreamy sleep from quiet wakefulness and has difficulty staying or falling asleep.
It is a relentless progressive illness whose symptoms include rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, excessive salivation, tremors and eventually coma and death. Persons who develop the illness will typically die from between 8-72 months after they report the first symptoms.
Other than that, insomnia or difficulty falling asleep can only negatively affect the day to day functioning and quality of life of a person. Notably, death could occur as a result of accidents due to lack of proper judgment; especially when operating machinery or traffic accidents.
What is the longest anyone has ever stayed awake?
The longest anyone has ever stayed awake was 264.4 hours or roughly 11 days 25 minutes. The feat was achieved in 1964 by high school student Randy Gardner of San Diego California. The previous record has been held by Honolulu resident and disc jockey Tom Rounds, who had set the record by staying awake for 260 hours.
What happens to the brain when you don’t sleep?
According to a recent research study in the Journal of Nature Medicine, sleep deprivation makes it hard for brain cells to communicate effectively.
This is the reason you might feel sluggish the morning after a restless night as the brain cells are tired and can’t send messages fast enough. This could result in short term mental lapses that could affect visual perception and memory.
In the study, it was found that neurons fired weaker, responded more slowly, and their transmissions lacked the usual rapid reaction times when the participants were deprived of sleep.
This could explain why you would find it so hard to concentrate or think after having a sleepless night. According to the study, sleep deprivation affected most the regions of the brain that typically exhibited a lot of brain activity when a person is asleep.
These are regions normally associated with perception and memory. As such, these regions would have mental lapses when a person is subjected to sleep deprivation even as other areas of the brain would be completely fine.
The effects of sleep deprivation were compared to those of persons who have had too much to drink and have less control over perception and concentration.
How long can you go without sleep before hallucinating?
You can go up to 72 hours without sleep, after which you will start experiencing significant deficits in perception, motivation, and concentrations. It is at about the 72-hour mark that you will start experiencing hallucinations that usually are related to the environment in which you are in.
For instance, if you are on guard duty, you may be convinced that there is someone with a rifle in the nearby forest waiting to sneak up on you when there is nothing there but shadows and branches.
Hallucinations are a dangerous side effect of insomnia. Some of the observed forms of hallucinations include:
Imagined sounds such as hearing voices.
Seeing things creepy that are not there.
Sensing of unfounded smells.
Feeling as if someone is touching you which are not true.
Conclusion
every person has their own unique causes and experiences of insomnia. Sleep being a key ingredient of overall good health; it is important to take necessary measures to prevent suffering from insomnia.
From your environment to food intake and medications, it helps to be acutely aware of what could be causing your lack of sleep and make quick remedies. When mentally counting sheep is not helping with your quality of sleep and upsetting your nights rest you need to make the changes.

About the concert
www.myspace.com/arthurslanding
Arthurs Landing is a group of musicians, all of whom worked at various times in various contexts with the late Arthur Russell, a cellist and composer from Iowa who lived on the Lower East Side for most of the later part of his too-short life. Russell brought together the worlds of dance, pop, and folk with that of downtowns new music, and fused Western and Eastern musical traditions, driven by his engagement with Buddhist thought and practice. He collaborated often with Allen Ginsberg, and Phillip Glass was also an early mentor. Characteristic of Russell's method was his tendency to work hard and long, and he rarely considered anything finished. What was his unending pursuit of the ineffable becomes a challenge and inspiration for the Arthurs Landing ensemble. It is hard to resist the ambition and humor behind compositions with titles like Temple of Meaning, Terrace of Intelligibility, and Hop on Down to Petland. Russell is the focus of the feature-length 2008 documentary directed by Matt Wolf, Wild Combination. A biography by Tim Lawrence, Hold Onto Your Dreams, is due out this year.
The Arthurs Landing ensemble will perform pop songs and parts of a longer instrumental work called Singing Tractors and will be available following the performance to answer questions about Russells life and work.

There is a lot of information out there concerning diastasis recti and whether or not it is “fixable” injury or preventable like in illness. The answers to these questions can be quite overwhelmingly different depending on who you ask. In this article I hope to answer your most pressing questions.
Diastasis recti is usually not a permanent condition and can often be healed through strategic core rehab. It does take time and it will require hard work and dedication on your end, but it is usually possible to close the gap. Your gap may not close all the way. Diastasis recti is still being researched, however, recent studies have shown that the focus for diastasis healing should revolve around restoring core function rather than closing the gap entirely. Meaning that a small diastasis recti can still be considered totally functional.
Preventing a diastasis is approached in a similar way, but it is not guaranteed to prevent one from occurring. Strategic and intelligent core exercising routines are your best bet to get the strong core you want without causing any injury. One of the main causes of a diastasis outside of pregnancy is improper breathing patterns and cheats in core workouts.
Exercises and Good Practices for Preventing Diastasis Recti
Diastasis recti can occur in more than two thirds of postpartum women, however, there are some ways to mend the condition and to help prevent its development.
Pregnancy Prehab
Postpartum Rehab
Proper Diaphragmatic Breathing
Practicing Good Posture – relieve intra-abdominal tension

Testing for Diastasis Recti
If you are concerned you may have a diastasis recti, I recommend getting assessed by a PT or an OT before beginning any diastasis recti specific program; however, you can perform a self-assessment at home. The self assessment can be performed as follows:
Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor.
Place one hand on the midline of your core with your fingers pointing straight down on your abs.
If you need support for your head, place your other hand under your head and neck for support. Slowly lift your head and add minimal pressure to your fingers placed on your core. With no diastasis recti, there is the feeling of a toned wall as you lift your head up. If you feel a gap, or your fingers sink into your core, you likely have diastasis recti. In very obvious cases, you can feel the sides of your core muscles in between that gap on the left and right sides.
Repeat the process for the areas just above your belly button and below your belly button to determine whether or not the diastasis recti is isolated or in your core as a whole.
The severity of a diastasis depends on two factors: deep or shallow and width. A diastasis on 2.5cm or greater (2 or more fingers) is a wide diastasis, but can still be shallow. Typically a gap less than 2.5cm is considered okay- if it is shallow – but you should be mindful of it and consider intelligent core building routines to prevent the gap from widening.
If your gap is greater than 2.5cm (2 fingers or more), there is a chance that this gap is causing some issues. If you are experiencing any of the following:
Bulge in your abdominal core
Feeling of an Enlarged Abdomen
Pelvic floor issues
Abdominal gaping
Pain in your lower back
Look into enrolling into a program like Restore Your Core where I instruct you in correct core building strategies which can help eliminate many, if not all, of your symptoms. Below are a few exercises that I cover in my Restore Your Core Program that help aid in core restoration and strengthening and, though diastasis recti specific, can potentially aid in preventing a DR from occurring or returning.
How Diastasis Recti Develops
There is no one thing that causes a diastasis to develop. A DR can occur for many reasons. One of the most common ways a diastasis recti occurs is through any activity that causes excess pressure on the abs and core. Like a pregnancy, chronic core tension, holding the core tight all of the time, limitations in movement of the torso.
Regarding pregnancy: 100% of all pregnant women have a diastasis recti: the abdominals stretch to accommodate the growing uterus. A diastasis recti is typically only a concern if your abdominal muscles have not recentered by about 6 to 12 weeks postpartum.
However, you do not have to have given birth in order to develop a diastasis recti. Although pregnancy is the most common cause of a diastasis recti, there are many other factors that play into its occurence. DR affects both men and women and even children equally. Many bodybuilders and athletes have a diastasis recti without even knowing it. Below are several ways a diastasis recti could develop:
Multiple pregnancies
Frequent or rapid changes in weight
Weightlifting
Certain core exercises
Underlying Abdominal Illnesses (i.e. stomach cancer, or cirrhosis)
Obesity
One thing you should keep in mind is that despite the various reasons a diastasis recti could occur, it is not an abdominal tearing. A diastasis recti occurs when the connective tissue between the two sides of your rectus abdominis (6-pack) muscles separate at the midline. This creates a gap in the midline of your abdomen anywhere from the pubic bone to the base of your ribcage. Although in more severe cases it is common for abdominal organs to be exposed, it is uncommon for there to be any organ damage.
Exercises & Good Practices
During your pregnancy, it is important that you consider some form of prehab or exercise routine that aids in maintaining a strong and functional core as your body goes through a major transition. In my program One Strong Mama, we cover many exercises and techniques that assist you in this. Below are a few things to keep in mind during your pregnancy.
1. Practice appropriate breathing patterns
Though this may seem like a simple task, many people do not practice proper breathing patterns. 3D rib breathing, as opposed to belly breathing, helps limit the amount of stress and pressure that you add to your abdomen daily. Inconsistent or improper breathing can add additional pressure to your abdomen causing a diastasis recti. Many people are taught to belly breath, are taught that diaphragm breathing means belly breathing and have excess pressure on their core wall as a result.
2. Practice good posture and free your abs from excess tension
While pregnant, it can be difficult to sit-up straight without straining your abdomen and lower back. The added weight in your belly can also allow for bad posture. When rising up out of bed, don’t sit straight up. This adds unnecessary pressure to your abdomen. When sitting up in bed or trying to get out, try either rolling over on your side before rising or focus on rising using your transverse abdominal muscles (those closer to your pubic bone).
3. Understand a good / healthy / functional core strategy
Approaching strength building and core function routines, it is important to do so smartly. There should be no compromises in exercise. In both One Strong Mama and in Restore Your Core I focus on strengthening your body effectively and efficiently in order for you to be able to workout without any compensation with great results. Click here for a list of tips and tricks to help relieve any symptoms you may have or for exercises to help correct any unhealthy patterns you may be following.
Strategic Core Exercise Has Shown Successful Results
Preventing a DR can be a bit tricky to wrap your head around. A common diastasis recti myth: having a toned, slim abdomen is the primary result of healing. This just isn’t true. Many athletes and bodybuilders have diastasis recti. Having a toned body does not equate to being diastasis recti free or immune.
The primary focus in healing a diastasis recti is helping prevent you from making common (but harmful) workout cheats and to correct problematic exercises that end up damaging your abdominals rather than promoting core function. The end result is a functional core through intelligent core rehab.
Many methods of avoiding diastasis recti development involve postural awareness, corrective exercises, and a conscious prehab approach during pregnancy. Yet, most of these are important to keep in mind regardless of whether you are male or female, pregnant or not.
Understand a good / healthy / functional core strategy
Practice appropriate breathing patterns
Ensure your abs are free from excess tension
Avoid exercises that increase focalized tension in the abdomen
Practice good posture
Although diastasis recti is not completely avoidable in some cases, the list above helps paint a clear picture on how to protect your core while still staying active. The key is to be mindful of your body’s function and how to increase your functionality and build strength without causing harm to your body. It is possible to be active and functional without injury.
5 Exercises to Help Prevent Diastasis Recti
Candles / Core Engagement
Come to sit tall or stand. Inhale and on the exhale, imagine you are blowing out 100 candles. As you blow, you should feel your core tighten and draw inwards. This can and should be practiced whenever working out and managing a load, a weight, a core move. It automates the core and begins to integrate the function of the core to the activity that you are doing.
Seated Side Bend
Sit comfortably. Possibly on a block or some pillows. Hold a yoga strap or belt overhead. Bend your elbows slightly to take the stress off of your neck and shoulders. Exhale, blow candles, tighten your core and side bend right and then exhale to go left. Your core should not bulge, brace or push out as you do these. These are great for upper body mobility, torso length and strength are a great way to work your core without strain.
Twist
Sit comfortably. Possibly on a block or some pillows. Hold a yoga strap or belt in front of you. Exhale to blow candles, feel your core tighten and then rotate your chest to the right, come center and then exhale to go left. Your core should not bulge, brace or push out as you do these. These are great for upper body mobility and are a great way to work your core without strain. One of the keys to preventing a diastasis recti is to ensure that your upper body is mobile, supple and strong.
Side Balance
For this exercise, you will balance in a supported side plank. Your right knee and right hand down on the mat and your left arm straight up to the sky with your left leg straight on the mat. Use your candles for support as you exhale. This move is great for balance, arm and shoulder strength and a ton of core support.
Opposite Reach
For this exercise, you will come onto your hands and knees and slowly lift the opposite arm and leg. If that is too hard, do just one at a time. As you lift, you exhale and blow candles, feel your core engage and be extra sure not to bear down, brace or bulge your core! Amazing for your shoulders, arms, core and booty.
For more on these exercises. Click here.
Postpartum Exercises
After giving birth and being cleared for exercise (typically 6 – 12 weeks postpartum), it may be helpful for you to pursue core building exercises. These can either help prevent diastasis recti or help close the gap that may be a result of childbirth. Here are a few exercises that you can do at home.
Candles
Candles is another breathing technique that helps with ab contraction while limiting pressure in your abdomen. Inhale normally. On your exhale, release your breath slowly as if you were blowing out a lot of candles. If done properly, you should feel your abdominal muscles contract/respond.
Tabletop or Reverse Marching
Lie down similarly to that of a diastasis test. Exhale as you would with the candles method. As you exhale, alternate bringing your knees, while still bent, toward your body.
Goddess Side Bend
While standing with wide feet placement (knees aligned with feet, feet aligned with shoulders), exhale and bend your knees slowly until they are level with your ankles. Make sure you use your heels to stabilize your body. Side bend by raising your arm while maintaining resistance. Repeat side rotations 3x and then return to a standing position.
Goddess Squat Twist
Repeat steps outlined above but place your arms across your chest. While in the goddess position, twist by using your ribcage, not your arms. Repeat side twists 4x and return to a standing position
Lunge with a Twist and Chop
Practice lunging. While using correct posture, bring one leg forward and lift your hands, palms crossed, in front of your face. Then slowly begin to twist toward your forward leg. As you twist toward your forward leg, bring your arms across your thigh in a chopping motion. Repeat while alternating between sides and legs.

Exercises to Avoid
There are several daily motions and exercises you should avoid if you have a compromised core. In this case, you want to avoid any exercises or stretches that add additional or excess pressure to your abdomen. A few exercises to avoid:
Most Crunches or Sit-Ups
Full Push-Ups (they can strain the abdominal muscles)
Any exercises that could cause your core to bulge.
I recommend avoiding any flat belly programs that focus on an aesthetic appeal over function. The purpose of these exercises is to strengthen and rebuild your core. Find comfortable movements that prevent your core from pushing out and practice proper breathing techniques. The goal is for healing and function so that you can accomplish the things you love to do without sacrificing your body.

About the photograph
Technically "wrong" but oh so satisfying portrait...
This is what happens when there's no light, no tripod and not allowed to strobe! The photograph was taken with Canon EOS 10D with the Canon 24-70 f2.8L, f/2.8, 1/60 sec, ISO 3200 so I have to get creative on how to develop the photo...

For January Scavenge Challenge #19 By special request, the subject is open to interpretation: music.
Taken at Circular Quay alongside the ferry terminal where there are always Aboriginal musicians entertaining young and old with their skills on the didgeridoo.
the Australian government and all its agencies have formally accept didjeridu as the correct spelling, however, since didgeridoo is the more popular way of spelling, didjeridu and didgeridoo are used interchangeably.
Whilst some people believe the Aboriginal people of Australia have been using the didgeridoo for 40,000 years or more, archaeological research suggests that the didgeridoo is only about 2000 years old. The evidence of this research comes in the form of rock art studies in the Northern Territory which show images of humans playing the didgeridoo painted on cave walls starting from about 2000 years ago. Before this time, there are no images of didgeridoos or humans playing didgeridoos.
Regardless of how old the didgeridoo is, Western society has only recently - relatively speaking - become acquainted with the didgeridoo.
It is an Australian Aboriginal musical instrument endemic to the northern parts of Australia and unusual in that a special technique called 'circular breathing' is used to play the instrument. In 'circular breathing' air is breathed in through the nose at the same time as air is being blown out of the mouth. This technique allows a skilled didjeridoo player to maintain a continuous sound on the instrument for as long as the player wants.
It is suggested that the special breathing technique needed to play the didjeridu as well as the distinct acoustics of the instrument both have positive effects on inducing the alpha brain wave patterns that are associated with deep meditation.
Either way, it is a resonant haunting instrument.

Believe it or not, diastasis recti can affect men just as it can affect women. One of the biggest myths surrounding diastasis recti is that it only occurs in women postpartum. However, diastasis recti is a universal occurrence that affects the abdominal wall without gender specificity.
What is Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti occurs when excess pressure is exerted on the abdominal muscles. This excess pressure can cause them to separate – creating a “gap” in the center of the core. Diastasis recti is also associated with the stretching and thinning of the linea alba (the connective tissue that lies underneath the abs). This tissue binds the vertical muscles on each side of your belly button (the abdominis recti or 6-pack muscles). This occurrence leaves a gap between the vertical muscles and leaves the abdominals unsupported, which can lead to a host of issues.
In men and women, this gap can be created in the midline of your belly anywhere from the pubic bone to the base of your ribcage. During a crunch or sit-up, where one would normally feel tension and closure, there is a space in between.
Symptoms
The symptoms of a diastasis recti in men don’t vary much from women. The hallmark sign of a diastasis recti in many men is the vertical bulge that appears between the abdominal walls when performing a crunch or a sit-up. Yet, some other distinguishable symptoms include:
Constipation
Lower back pain
Urinary incontinence
Difficulty breathing
Discomfort in bodily movements
Weakened core
Sensation of a weak core
*Note: not all of these symptoms are directly related to a diastasis recti. If you are experiencing many or most of these symptoms it could be a sign of another underlying illness. If you are concerned, pay your doctor a visit to determine what else may be going on.
It is also important to know that not everyone will experience all of these symptoms. It is common for people to experience only one or a few of these symptoms. A diagnosis from a specialist is important.
Diastasis Recti Test
If you think you have a diastasis recti, you can perform a self-test at home or have a physical therapist assess you.
A self-assessment can be performed as follows:
Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor.
Place one hand on your belly with your fingers pointing straight down on your core.
After performing a self-assessment, there are a few things to keep in mind. A gap that is only one or two finger widths wide is not a big concern, as long as it is shallow – but caution is recommended. However, if you discover that you have a gap ranging from 2.7 cms or larger (2.5 fingers or larger) you should consult a PT or OT. Regardless of the size of the gap, if there is a gap, it is in your best interest to consider core restoration rehab and strength building exercises to help close the gap and prevent it from widening further.
What Causes a Diastasis Recti in Men?
While a diastasis recti is usually caused by pregnancy in women, research has helped reveal several causes of the condition in men. Some of the common reasons for a diastasis recti to develop are:
Frequent or rapid changes in weight
Weightlifting
Certain core exercises
Underlying Abdominal Illnesses (i.e. stomach cancer, or cirrhosis)
Obesity
The most common cause is improper exercise and weight-lifting, especially when it comes to abdominal exercises like: sit-ups, crunches, push-ups, and front planks. These exercises are not harmful if approached intelligently. However, making compromises or taking cheats can greatly affect your physical well-being and lead to an injury like diastasis recti.
In addition to this, excess weight and obesity can be a leading cause of diastasis recti in men. Excess weight can place undue stress on the abdominal muscles and cause them to separate and weaken. However, it is important to note that this is not limited to excess body fat. Increased levels of weight gain or weight loss due to muscular expansion or can also go hand in hand with a diastasis recti. That is why diastasis recti is most commonly seen in heavy-weight bodybuilders.
Finally, age and certain medical conditions can lead to a diastasis recti. Conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver and abdominal wall cancer could also be culprits of diastasis recti in men.
How then can we properly approach exercise and strength training without causing injury while promoting strength, functionality, and health?
Core Restoration Through Effective Training
The best approach to healing a diastasis recti is core training versus a standard exercise routine. How we hold our bodies, how we stand, whether we have a tense, tight belly, our exercise regimens, and our breathing patterns all play part in core functionality or lead to a system fault. The biggest issue exercise is how often we compensate. Not because it’s a fault of ours, but because our body is intelligent enough to implement other bodily systems when another one fails.
Arbitrary sit-ups, crunches, and planks will not fix a core system failure. We need to train our core, not just exercise our core. In training, we are teaching our core to do its job, to manage load (weights and movement), our weight, and endurance. Being good at exercise does not properly train your core to be resilient, reflexive, and responsive. With a diastasis recti, the body has lost its innate support system it once had. However, it is not gone forever, but clearing the fog surrounding exercise and health is the primary goal to healing. It is what I work on daily in my Restore Your Core Program.
Some key ground rules when working to strengthen your care via effective core training are:
Do not bulge your abs when doing core exercises!
Do not brace (do not overreact or compensate during core exercises)
Do not bear down when doing core exercises. Bearing down is a movement similar to making a bowel movement. Do not add additional pressure to your abdomen.
Never hold your breath while doing core exercises!
These common cheats can worsen a diastasis recti. To learn more about effective core strength training, check out my Essential Strength page for strength exercises that cover your whole body head to toe.
Functionality Exercises for Diastasis Recti
Restoring your core is all about gaining functionality back. The exercises below are great examples of how to help build strength beginning from a basic level.
Candles:
Candles is a breathing technique that helps with ab contraction. This exercise can be done while in any position. Inhale normally and on your exhale, release your breath slowly (i.e. hiss, soft blow, between teeth) as if you were blowing out a lot of candles. If done properly, you should feel your abdominal muscles contract/respond.
Tabletop or Reverse Marching:
Lie down similarly to that of a diastasis test. On each exhale, practice candles. As you exhale, alternate bringing your knee, while still bent, toward your body.
Goddess Side Bend:
While standing with wide feet placement (knees aligned with feet), begin candles exhale and bend your knees slowly until they are level with your ankles. Stabilize your body by pressing your heels into the floor. Side bend by raising your arm while maintaining resistance. Repeat side rotations 3x and then return to a standing position.
Goddess Squat Twist:
Repeat steps outlined above but have your arms stacked across your chest. While in the goddess position, twist by using your ribcage and not your arms. Repeat side twists 4x and return to a standing position
Lunge with a Twist and Chop:
Practice lunging. As you bring one leg forward–all while maintaining correct posture–lift your hands, palms crossed, in front of your face. Then slowly begin to twist toward your forward leg. As you twist toward your forward leg, bring your arms across your thigh in a chopping motion.

Exercises to Avoid
There are several everyday exercises and movements that those with a diastasis recti should avoid. You want to avoid any exercises that put extra stress on the midline. These can stretch or expand the abdominal wall and can lead to the condition worsening.
Avoid doing the following:
Yoga poses or stretching routines that stretch the abs
Most crunches
Full push-ups
Any exercises that cause your abdominal wall to bulge
Remember that healing will look different for each person. The time it takes to heal depends on the severity of the injury to the linea alba and connective tissues. Yet, you should be hopeful knowing it takes time! For some people it can take years to properly heal and to restore full function, but healing is possible.

From Wikipedia:
"The didgeridoo (also known as a didjeridu) is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1,500 years ago and still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or "drone pipe". Musicologists classify it as a brass aerophone.
There are no reliable sources stating the didgeridoo's exact age. Archaeological studies of rock art in Northern Australia suggest that the people of the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory have been using the didgeridoo for less than 1,000 years, based on the dating of paintings on cave walls and shelters from this period. A clear rock painting in Ginga Wardelirrhmeng, on the northern edge of the Arnhem Land plateau, from the freshwater period shows a didgeridoo player and two songmen participating in an Ubarr Ceremony.
A modern didgeridoo is usually cylindrical or conical, and can measure anywhere from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft) long. Most are around 1.2 m (4 ft) long. Generally, the longer the instrument, the lower the pitch or key of the instrument. However, flared instruments play a higher pitch than unflared instruments of the same length.
The didgeridoo is played with continuously vibrating lips to produce the drone while using a special breathing technique called circular breathing. This requires breathing in through the nose whilst simultaneously expelling stored air out of the mouth using the tongue and cheeks. By use of this technique, a skilled player can replenish the air in their lungs, and with practice can sustain a note for as long as desired. Recordings exist of modern didgeridoo players playing continuously for more than 40 minutes."

“Kundalini Dance is a contemporary ecstatic dance journey into the seven chakras where dance-movement therapy, rhythmic breath, tantric-healing, trance energy and Shamanic States are used to enter into the body/mind consciousness to gain insight and healing for body-mind and soul. Kundalini Dance balances the chakras as a whole system and so results in physical and emotional healing.
Each chakra governs different organs, body parts, and emotions. Core issues relating to survival, creativity, sexuality, personal power/control, love, relationships, communication, intuition, and spirituality are all expressed through the chakras. Combining, rhythmic breathing techniques that purify and express the energy of each chakra with dance movements, shifts stagnant energy and repressed emotions that have been trapped in the mind and in the cells of the body. It is through this dance practice that we can let go of stress, anger, grief, fear, and negativity. Our breath is a powerful tool for transformation; it’s the key to physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, taking you to natural states of ecstasy. It rejuvenates the body, bringing insight and clarity to the mind, and supports the awakening of higher consciousness.”

Diastasis recti is a complicated injury. Some people will go through rehab fully dedicated to restoring their core function and still have a gap. The truth is: diastasis recti is a long term healing process. Think of it like an ankle sprain which can take years to fully heal. Your linea alba tissue heals over time because it is not a muscle, it is tissue and tissue always takes longer to heal. Healing from diastasis recti can be done and many women have been successful, but it does take time. Once the gap is closed, your healing will still continue.
Diastasis recti differs with every person as it correlates with their body type, make, and build. Although it is highly likely for you to experience healing through rehab, there is the possibility that you may end up needing surgery. However, the need for surgery is rare. Thus, the answer to whether or not diastasis recti can be fixed without surgery can be a difficult one to answer. I will try to answer the question of healing diastasis recti below.
What is Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti is the separation of the rectus abdominis (abdominal, 6 pack) muscles from the midline tissue known as the linea alba (tissue lining the center of your core). As an injury, a diastasis recti affects the entire function of the core. Diastasis recti is also not a one-size-fits-all injury. There are many factors in play when it comes to how it is developed.
Diastasis Recti Causes
A diastasis recti can occur in many ways. From weightlifting injuries to pregnancy. Some of the most common reasons a diastasis recti develops are:
Multiple pregnancies
Frequent or rapid changes in weight
Weightlifting
Certain core exercises
Underlying Abdominal Illnesses (i.e. stomach cancer, or cirrhosis)
Obesity
Although these causes are more common, it is possible to have a diastasis recti and appear to be in great shape. Core function is not always associated with a slim and fit looking body. Many bodybuilders and professional athletes have a diastasis recti. Knowing core function is not a result of a flat belly is important when pursuing rehab and understanding appropriate expectations and results in healing. You can have a belly and still have a fully functional core.
Symptoms
Men and women can both develop a diastasis recti. Some of the most common symptoms of a diastasis recti are, but aren’t limited to:
Bulge in your abdominal core (also known as a “pooch”)
Enlarged Abdomen (or feeling as if your abdomen is enlarged)
Pelvic floor issues (i.e. leakage)
Abdominal gaping
Pain in your lower back
Poor posture
Constipation
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, I recommend scheduling an appointment with your physical therapist in order to determine if they are a result of diastasis recti. If they are, begin considering enrolling in a program like my Restore Your Core program to begin your healing process. In programs like Restore Your Core the focus will be on correcting any unhealthy habits and core restoring instruction to help strengthen your body to its full potential.
Is Diastasis Recti Permanent?
For many people, not at all! A diastasis recti can be healed and the gap between your abdominal muscles can be closed. However, it takes time for the gap to close and for the linea alba and connective tissues to heal and strengthen. It is much more important for you to regain full function of your core than it is to close the gap.
What Helps Close Diastasis Recti?
Exercise & Rehab
The primary method of healing a diastasis recti and closing the abdominal separation is rehab and a core building program that is specific for those with a diastasis recti. The exercises in these programs are specialized to restore core function and strengthen the linea alba.
Examples of Diastasis Recti Closing Practices
Programs like Restore Your Core teach you proper core loading strategies and encourage you to implement your whole body in healing and getting strong.
Diet modification. For many, digestion is affected by diastasis recti. Certain foods become intolerable. Although I am not a dietician, intermittent fasting, no sugar, and no gluten has really helped many of my clients.
Adding more load (after completing a program like Restore Your Core). This includes weights and harder moves.
Myofascial release with an expert on the core system. Barnes and Rolfing are great systems.
Cardio
Being willing to do what seems difficult and setting aside fears concerning outcome and expectations.
Surgery
Unfortunately, there are times when surgery is necessary for fixing a diastasis recti. However, it is more likely to heal a diastasis recti through corrective exercises. I recommend pursuing a core restoring program for at least a year before considering surgery. Many doctors recommend this as well.
Core Building Exercises
A diastasis recti naturally occurs during pregnancy. As the womb grows, the rectus abdominis and core muscles stretch and shift in order to make room for your growing uterus. There are several ways to help prevent your chances of a diastasis recti setting in postpartum. Below are a few exercises that you can practice in various stages of your pregnancy in order to help your muscles retain strength after you give birth.
These are great for upper body mobility, torso length and strength and are a great way to work your core without strain.

Restore Your Core: Diastasis Recti
Finding a well balanced and intensive program whose goal is to rebuild strength and restore function to your body is one of the most important aspects of healing your diastasis recti. Below are a few exercises that have helped many people close the gap and strengthen their core.
5 Exercises to Help with Diastasis Recti
Candles
Candles is another breathing technique which contracts your abs while limiting the pressure in your abdomen. Inhale normally. On your exhale, release your breath slowly as if you were blowing out a lot of candles. If done properly, you should feel your abdominal muscles contract/respond.
Tabletop or Reverse Marching
Lie down with knees bent similarly to that of a crunch. Exhale as you would with the candles method and begin to alternate bringing your knees, while still bent, toward your body.
Goddess Side Bend
Stand with knees aligned with feet, feet aligned with shoulders. Exhale and bend your knees slowly until they are level with your ankles. Use your heels to stabilize your body. Side bend by raising your arm while maintaining resistance. Repeat side rotations 3x and then return to a standing position.
Goddess Squat Twist
Repeat the beginning steps outlined above, but place your arms across your chest. While in the goddess position, twist by using your ribcage, not your arms. Repeat side twists 4x and return to a standing position.
Lunge with a Twist and Chop
While using correct posture, bring one leg forward and lift your hands, palms crossed, in front of your face. Then slowly begin to twist toward your forward leg. As you twist toward your forward leg, bring your arms across your thigh in a chopping motion. Repeat while alternating between sides and legs.
Healing looks different for each person and the time it takes to heal depends on the severity of the injury to the linea alba and connective tissues. Knowing it takes a long time should give you hope! For some people it can take years to properly heal and to restore full function. Getting back to doing all the things you love can happen. Healing just takes time.

When you begin reading about yoga, books suggest the ultimate goal is to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit. Yogis view that the mind and the body are one, and believe that if they practice yoga and incorporate the tools for living, one can find harmony and heal self. Yoga therefore is considered therapeutic and is being utilized for those interested in “prevention NOT treatment.” As you become more aware of your body's posture, alignment and patterns of movement, you also gain flexibility and the ability to process and deal with stress in a positive manner. This is one of the foremost reasons why people want to start Practicing Yoga - to feel fitter, be more energetic, be happier and peaceful.
Yoga is a science that has been practiced for thousands of years. It is consists of Ancient Theories, observations and principles about the mind and body connection which is now being proven by modern medicine. Substantial research has been conducted to look at the Health Benefits of Yoga - from the Yoga Postures (Asanas), Yoga Breathing (Pranayama), and Meditation. The information on Yoga Poses & Benefits are grouped into three categories-physiological, psychological, biochemical effects. Furthermore, scientists have laid these results against the benefits of regular exercise. It’s amazing how much the physical body does benefit from incorporating yoga as a daily practice.
Yoga is considered a mind-body type of complementary and alternative medicine practice. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind, helping you relax and manage stress and anxiety. Traditional yoga philosophy requires that students adhere to this mission through behavior, diet and meditation. But if you're just looking for better stress management — whether because of life's daily hassles or a health problem you're facing — and not an entire lifestyle change or way of life, yoga can still help.
The Health Benefits of Yoga
Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000 years, and currently, close to 11 million Americans now enjoy its health benefits. Yoga can hardly be called a trend.
Most Westernized yoga classes focus on learning physical poses, which are called asanas. They also usually include some form of breathing technique and possibly a meditation technique as well. Some yoga classes are designed purely for relaxation. But there are styles of yoga that teach you how to move your body in new ways. Choosing one of these styles offers the greatest health benefits by enabling you to develop your flexibility, strength, and balance.
Yoga and Flexibility
When some people think of yoga, they imagine having to stretch like a gymnast. That makes them worry that they're too old, unfit, or "tight" to do yoga. The truth is you're never too old to improve flexibility. The series of yoga poses called asanas work by safely stretching your muscles. This releases the lactic acid that builds up with muscle use and causes stiffness, tension, pain, and fatigue. In addition, yoga increases the range of motion in joints. It may also increase lubrication in the joints. The outcome is a sense of ease and fluidity throughout your body.
Yoga stretches not only your muscles but all of the soft tissues of your body. That includes ligaments, tendons, and the fascia sheath that surrounds your muscles. And no matter your level of yoga, you most likely will see benefits in a very short period of time. In one study, participants had up to 35% improvement in flexibility after only eight weeks of yoga. The greatest gains were in shoulder and trunk flexibility.
Yoga and Strength
Some styles of yoga, such as ashtanga and power yoga, are more vigorous than others. Practicing one of these styles will help you improve muscle tone.
But even less vigorous styles of yoga, such as Iyengar or hatha, which focuses on less movement and more precise alignment in poses, can provide strength and endurance benefits. Watch for the mid month edition if you would like to learn more about the various types of yoga and individual & collective benefits.
Yoga Can Help Posture
With increased flexibility and strength comes better posture. Most standing and sitting poses develop core strength. That's because you're counting on your deep abdominals to support and maintain each pose. With a stronger core, you're more likely to sit and stand "tall." Another benefit of yoga is the increased body awareness. This heightened awareness tells you more quickly when you're slouching or slumping so you can adjust your posture.
Other Benefits of Yoga
Some studies suggest that yoga may have a positive effect on learning and memory. Other researchers have been studying whether yoga can slow the aging process, increase a person's sense of self-acceptance, or improve energy levels. Some potential benefits of yoga may be hard to study scientifically. For instance, yoga has been said to increase spiritual awareness. Nevertheless, there is an abundance of anecdotal claims for what yoga can do. Go to any yoga studio and listen to students after class. Some will even tell you that yoga can help improve marriages and relationships at work. The only way to be certain of all that yoga can do for you is to try it for yourself and see.

Insomnia is a classic problem for some people. Insomnia can be caused by several factors, among others, computer radiation exposure, bad food, and stress. Breathing technique “4-7-8” is an effective technique to treat insomnia. As described above, this method was created by Dr. Weil. He offers a step meditation in anti-stress treatments. This technique is fairly easy to do. Respondents only need to breathe through the nose for 4 seconds, and then held their breath for up to 7 seconds, and exhale through the mouth for 8 seconds. Respondents will feel a sense of calm.
This technique has resulted in various positive responses from the respondents. They admit that after applying this method, they can overcome their insomnia problem; even they can fall asleep in less than 60 seconds! What makes this technique so good is the fact that this technique is able to stimulate the adrenal glands to release adrenaline. The release of adrenaline will raise your heart rate accompanied by slowing the heart rate (at the time of exhalation of breath). This method has the same effect when we’re on the edge of a quiet beach. By Dr. Andrew Weil. To know more visit www.yogagurusuneelsingh.com Pic by Vijay gautam

These are great for upper body mobility, torso length and strength and are a great way to work your core without strain.

Hundreds of martial arts programs are available throughout the city. Whether your goal is fitness, competition, self defense, or personal development, there's a Martial Arts Portland Oregon program to meet your interests and needs. Don't think jus
t eastern style Karate and Judo. There's also opportunities to learn boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling.
How students progress varies from school to school and system to system. Most Eastern Martial Arts use a skill testing system with colored belts showing a students rank. Most western systems test through combat with winners receiving a Title. Ranking systems vary from system to system, and sometimes from school to school.
Although hard contact sports have injury rates to be considered, many of today's martial arts use soft contact training. The physical and mental benefits of training are many: aerobic fitness, stamina, strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, self control, focus, self discipline. Training also teaches respectful conduct, responsible behavior, self discipline, commitment.
Learn to persevere after a hit, recover from a fall, avoid a strike, land a strike. Proper breathing techniques extend physical capabilities and reduce injuries. Eastern forms teach choreographed routines to train the bodies reflexes and muscle memory. Some forms of Martial Arts focus on hard contact. Others practice sparring where the kicks and punches don't actually connect, but are obvious to a judge or bystander. Eastern training also includes advanced training in breathing techniques and meditation.
Training for children focuses on self control, listening skills, stranger awareness, anti-bullying strategies, respect for others. It's a sport that many children find exciting, and it gets them moving and training their bodies. It also allows children to progress at their own rate. No team pressure to win the game, catch that ball.
MMA combines Eastern and Western training in an anything that wins goes style. Kung Fu focuses on striking arts but uses fluid, artistic motions easier on the joints to practice. Grappling moves are the focus of Aikido, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and Wrestling. Striking styles that have developed into competitive sports include Boxing, Karate, Taekwondo. Judo and Jiu-Jitsu also have a strong focus on competition. For self defense consider Kempo Karate, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Muay Thai. Learn how to take a strike, avoid a strike, land a strike (punch or kick).
Eastern styles focus on the mind body connection. If you're too infirm to practice combat style martial arts, take a look at Tai Chi. The focus is on stretching, balance, and fluid movements that are easy on the joints. Health benefits include increased focus, flexibility, coordination. It's a noncompetitive low impact exercise routine that can be modified to meet the physical limitations of the elderly and disabled.
Decide on your goals. Are you striving for fitness, personal development, self defense skills, or hungering to test your skills against the competition. Meet with the teachers/coaches. Ask about their experience and qualifications. Observe a class of experienced students to see the schools training methods and philosophy in action. Explain your goals to be sure the program is compatible with your goals.
Storefront training tends to be more expensive, and often requires participants to sign a year long contract. If you know what you want and you're serious about a long term commitment, this may be the right choice. If you're just testing the waters, take a look at city recreation classes, after school programs, or community gym offerings.

In this Zen Koan a monk asks Chao-Chou, "Does a dog have Buddha nature?"
and Chao Chao replied "Mu"
Which means no, nothing or emptiness.
Can Tantric Buddhism really be considered Buddhism? The Buddha taught that life is suffering stemmed from desire (although further defined that anxiety is the seed of desire) and that to alleviate suffering one must cease desire by non-attraction, aversion and even ignorance. This is called the sutra path and one of two paths that the Buddha taught. The other path is called the Tantra, Mantra, or the Vajrayana path which is homeopathic to desire in that the antidote to a snakes poison is snake’s venom, a thorn can be removed by a thorn, a burn can be healed by a burn and ordinary desire can be transformed into sublime desire. Both paths which appear to be radically opposed to each other reach the same wisdom through different means of rejection to the existing societal structures.
The sutra path is exoteric and thus the primary Buddhism practiced by the laity consensus. This path is otherwise known as the perfection of wisdom. This wisdom is obtained by a lengthy and gradual training in generosity, morality, forbearance, perseverance, and meditative concentration. The practitioner of the sutra path can thus renounce desire and the world through the Buddhist ideal and concept of emptiness.
The Tantric path is geared for those whom have greater difficulty to renounce the world yet possess great compassion and sharp faculties to not be deluded by attachment to samsara. Tantra most commonly purifies the mind in stages so that the practitioner can experience and understand their consciousness. The Vajrayana path utilizes magical ritualistic meditating techniques which greatly accelerates the practice and develops the same virtues and knowledge of the sutra path. The mantra path pinnacles in the instantaneous practice otherwise known as the “great seal” or Mahamudra. The initial stages of the great seal consists in dissolving ordinary perception into the perception of emptiness whereas the “completion stage” or “great seal”, cognizes the ultimate nature of mind itself and ceases perception of the ideation so that the luminosity of mind appears and the mind can be aware of its own emptiness. Tantra is thus much more than ritualistic techniques, but in fact acts as a meditative discharge of insights developed within the Mahayana philosophical tradition.
Both paths lead to the same wisdom. This is the middle course between the conventional and ultimate truths. That is the middle way between everything consisting of an inherent existence and the nihilism which denies phenomenon’s causal relations. Thus we find an emptiness of inherent existence which makes dependent origination possible. The conventional truth of appearances and the ultimate truth of emptiness can then be simultaneously comprehended. With no difference in the profundity of the highest wisdom between Sutra and Tantra, the superiority of the Tantric vehicle resides in the method.
The Tantric path reaches realization through yogic discipline of the mind. The Vajrayana yokes the creative powers of the mind by stimulating and then harnessing desire to use in focusing the five senses and aggregates (form, conception, volition, perception, and consciousness) with the mandala of the Buddha-mind. Man as the Mandala, is a microcosm of the macrocosm. Man and the world become fundamentally identical and thus sexuality, as ones of the world’s main driving forces, is reintegrated. This mastery of mind, emotions, sexual energy, mental and physical bodies, all act as an inner yoga to bliss. The spiritual body turns passions and lust into a divine love. The completion process finds that man’s essential nature is of bliss and not of conceptual thought but a basic state in which winds traverse the nadis channels and are sealed by mind-body with the consort.
Human beings experience their bodies and their sexuality in many different ways which can be a vivid abuse of desire or a sensual religious experience. Desire can act as an offering to enlightenment where the blissful mind sees the true nature of things and can offer and receive without attachment. Integrating the two truths, the yin and the yang, the womb and diamond, can be expressed as a sexual union of the god or Buddha with his female consort representing his energy. Sakti, or Kundalini energy, is a feminine serpentine energy which is coiled around the base of the spine. Usually sleeping, this energy can be awakened to traverse the nadis channels and rise up the spinal column to the Ajna Cakra behind the center of the eyebrows and even fly beyond the body for the heavens. The energy is pumped up into the sky by winds produced with Tantric rites such as pounding Mantras (chants) with repeated utterances and breathing techniques which often involve the five normally forbidden ritual substances of liquor, meat, fish, seminal fluids and the self. The Yaksini or practitioner gives the body as a sacrifice of food for the Goddess and liberated of a suffering existence the bonds are broken and the soul joins in union with the Sakti to fly.
Sexuality has a great capacity to offend however through boldly defying the social norms there is salvation to be found. Tantra is not a degeneration of Buddhism influenced by persuasion of a corrupting culture but rather a highly philosophical and ritual synthesis geared to realize the notion of the two truths and alleviate suffering by transforming desire through the most efficient expedient means possible. By placing desire in the service of liberation rather than sacrificing the world for liberations sake, desire is reinstated with the perspective of salvation which implies a certain disposition of the Tantric practitioners relationship with the cosmos as integrated within an all-embracing system of micro-macro cosmic correlations. Tantric Buddhism is thus really Buddhism and not a completely autonomous system that replaces and surpasses all that has come before but truly acts as a supplement to the traditional path of Buddhism.
However be for-warned,
for when you begin to focus on something,
that something eventually begins to focus on you.

A Breath of Fresh Air with TAPS Outdoors: Getting & Staying Grounded
October 2020
Virtual
During the month of October, we explored ways we can utilize nature as a guide for connecting to the present moment, honoring where we are internally and externally. From simple breathing techniques to unique strategies like using the National Military Suicide Survivor Seminar's theme Listen.Learn.Love., we focused on the ways nature can give us the tools we need to navigate any terrain, including grief. Getting grounded is simply finding present-mindedness. No matter the experience, we are stronger and more stable when we have the ability to be present and navigate how we respond to our emotions and environment.
