“Why did you make baked mac n’ cheese?” Her voice was distant so I figured she was probably in the living room or could have been in my bedroom or my brother’s.
“My brother would always make it for me when I was younger and I’d fallen off of my skateboard or something. It just…It was the first thing that came into my head.”
I heard her laugh but it sounded closer. I turned around from the oven to find her leaning against the half wall that lead into the kitchen.
Her face was cleaned up now and she wore no make up, which was just how I liked it. I gave her a pair of my sweatpants to change into and she had a tank top on that she brought in her bag.
“I cleaned your bedroom.”
I laughed asking why she did so. “It was messy Logan,”
“So.”
“Where’s your brother?”
“Working.” I answered her just as the oven timer went off. The heat attacked me as I opened the oven door. The breaded coating over the actual mac n’ cheese was golden and just by the sight of it, I could tell it was done.
“Where does he work?”
I pulled out two plates along with two forks. “He works with the US Navy.”
There were still several boxes that had yet to be unpacked scattered around the house and it was a new house and it still didn’t feel like home. It didn’t feel all that safe or conferrable but with Caroline here, for some reason it did. It could have been because their was an actual girl in our house but I wasn’t sure.
I scooped out a spoonful of food placing one on each plate. She sat herself down at the table, pulling one of her knee’s into her chest.
“Do you move around a lot?”
“Oh, yeah.”
“Is there milk in this?” Her voice was low and I looked up at her, as I chewed.
“Yeah. I put a little bit on the bottom of the bowl so it won’t burn.”
“I’m allergic to milk.”
“Are you serious?” My voice was rather loud, but I stared at her broken face. I couldn’t believe some of the moments or words we shared through out this evening, but this one toped it all.
“No, not really.”
“Caroline!” I shouted balling up my napkin through it at her. She laughed running behind the half wall to hide from more deadly napkins.
“I was kidding!” I grabbed a handful of napkins, balling them up and throwing them all at her from the kitchen.
“But I thought you were serious!”
I walked around the corner of the half wall into the living room but she was prepared. A pillow fell into my face. I could hear her laugh as she ran into another room which I figured would be my own. I grabbed the pillow running after her. Running into my bedroom, I called out her name as I walked through the doorway. A pillow slammed into my face instantly.
Her laugh filled the house but I ran after her, throwing my pillow at her body, she fell back onto my bed.
I don’t know why, but I ran to her, jumping on the bed beside her. She screamed and playfully hit my arm. I leaned my arm over her body pushing it upright and out of no where, she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling my face into hers and our lips together. I kissed her because well, I wanted to yes, but it seemed as if she wanted it too. I slid my hand down from her neck to her shoulder. That’s when she pulled away, screaming.
“Caroline, what’s wrong?” My voice was loud in our small house, in my small bedroom. Her body fell back onto my bed, her hands instantly going over her shoulder.
“Oh my gosh, ow!”
“Caroline. What is-”
Tears fell from her face and I felt like I was going to throw up again. I had not the slightest clue of what to do. I mean we were kissing and suddenly she pulled away cried out from pain and began to cry.
I pulled her upright, trying to avoid her shoulder and leaned her body against the wall.
“Caroline,” I said. “I need you to tell me what’s wrong.”
She sobbed, biting her lip and looking at me.
“Ry-Ryan-”
“What did he do to you, Caroline.” I could hear how flat my voice was through my own ears. I pushed tears off her face.
“That’s why I was walking on the road. He broke a beer bottle on my shoulder. I was going to sl-sleep at his house but I just took off from the party.”
I hadn’t even noticed her shoulder before, or when I found her in the street. Was it because their wasn’t much light in the house or in the street for that matter, but I didn’t know why I hadn’t noticed it before.
“He was drunk,” she said. “And I don’t even remember what was going on really, but it just came down on my skin and…And…It really hurts, Logan.” Her words were pushed together but I understood what she had said.
“I need you to move your hand so I can look at it.”
She stared at me shaking her head back and forth. Biting her lip more tears fell from her face.
“Why didn’t you say anything before, Caroline?”
“I don’t know, I didn’t…”
“You didn’t what?”
“I don’t know.”
Her face looked really broken now, covered with pain. I knew Eli could handle this, but I would have to explain this girl to him which was something I really didn’t want to have to do but he knew how to handle medical related things like this. Every time I got into a fight or fell off my bike or something, he knew exactly how to make my bruise heal or have my gushing cut close up and he knew various ways so rather than doing something to me that was painful, we had options that wouldn’t hurt me as much. I turned around reading the clock. Two-sixteen in the morning. Thank God it was Friday night and we didn’t have school the next day.
I kissed her head gently. “Stay here.”
I walked out of the room, searching for the phone, or a phone. I wasn’t entirely sure it was even hooked up.
“Logan, their’s more.”
I heard her voice, following me as I found the phone in the living room. I not sure why it was on the ground next to the television though. I picked it up dialing the one thing in my life that never changed, the number was always constant unlike all the houses I’d lived in, each school I’d been in, each team I was on, each person that came into my life.
“Eli Parker speaking.”
“Eli, hey, its me.”
“Hey man! What’s good my brother?”
I smiled asking him what he was up to. I turned around, leaning my back against the wall. Caroline was standing in the middle of the living room, still holding her shoulder. I walked over to her, pulling her body into mine. Her arms wrapped around my body and I could feel her head push into my chest.
“Oh you know, the usual. Class was actually really awesome! They asked me to teach two today and it was awesome.”
“That’s great.” I said.
“Why’d you call? Is everything okay?”
I looked down at Caroline’s shoulder. It was red and I was actually concerned at why it wasn’t bleeding. I thought I saw a piece of glass in it when we were in my bedroom.
“Its just that, I have this friend here and she was at-”
“You said she. You brought a girl home?” His voice was louder and I wished he wouldn’t freak out. I’d had relationships before they were just extremely hard to keep. I paused letting out a small sigh but just loud enough for him to hear. I could just see the smile across his face.
“Anyway,” I started. “Something…Happened and we just sort of need a doctor like guy here, real bad. Think you can come home?”
“This is like, an emergency?”
“Yeah.”
He told me to hold on and I heard muffled voices as he pulled away from the phone. Caroline was just standing in my arms quietly. I didn’t feel her smile on my chest or move at all.
“You’re like my boss loves you, you know.”
“Thanks Eli.”
“See you soon.”
I pressed the “end” button on the phone, stuffing it in the back pocket of my jeans. I wrapped my arms around Caroline, pulling her up off of the ground. She smiled slightly and even with dried tears across her face I could see it flush red.
“My brother is sort of mini doctor.”
“Really?”
I nodded.
“When will he get here? I’m so tired.”
“You look really tired.” I said.
I don’t know what time it was when Eli came home, but he was throwing little paper balls at my face from the doorway of my bedroom. He was sitting down on the floor with something moving in his lap. I couldn’t make it out right away until I rubbed my eyes.
“Dude, you have got to get up.”
Caroline’s head was half on my chest and my arm was around her waist. Not a good situation I thought. I didn’t want to wake her up right away so I slid out from underneath her as quietly as I could. Small paper balls fell from my neck and chest as I stood up walking to my brother.
Pulling the door shut, he was sitting at the kitchen table with a box on it. A wide smile was across his face as he waved his hand gesturing me to come to the table.
“Logan, meet Brad!”
I bent over peering inside the box to find a small orange, black and white kitten inside. He was sitting in the corner staring at a beat up piece of corn.
I was so amazed.
“Why is their a kitten in our house playing a piece of corn?” I asked flatly.
“Isn’t he the cutest?”
“Why is it playing with corn?”
The kitten jumped on the piece of corn now, biting the end of it attacking little kernels of corn.
“I found him outside the house!” He said. “He was sleeping by the steps and I just spotted him! Its not like I could have left him outside all alone!”
This was my classic brother, not thinking things through, just living in the moment. I mean, it really wasn’t a big deal but I just smiled about it, shaking it off.
“I uh, took a look at her shoulder. Logan, what happened to her?”
I slide down into a chair pulling the box towards me, wiggling my fingers at its little head.
“She’s not my girlfriend, to begin with. I’m not sure what we are at the moment.” I watched his eye brows go up, watching my face as I spoke. “We’re…Weird. I really don’t know how to describe it but she was walking in the street looking for a ride, so I picked her up not realizing who it was and she had left a party. Her boyfriend broke a beer bottle on her shoulder.”
“I was thinking that was glass in there,”
“Their’s glass in her skin?”
“A little bit, yeah. I mean, I can still get it out, but I don’t think she’ll be to excited about that.”
I thought about my brother digging into Caroline’s skin with medical tools. She cried so easily so she’d probably be balling during the surgery.
I nodded looking down at the kitten again. “What did you say its name is?”
“Brad.”
“Brad?”
“Brad.”
“What kind of…Brad? Seriously?” I asked.
“Yeah! Don’t you think it suits him?”
“No.” I answered. “Brad is a person name, not a cat name, Eli.”
“Say’s who?”
“Me.”

This photo shows a delicious plate of what appears to be schnitzel or breaded cutlet served with several sides. The main protein has a golden-brown crispy coating and is garnished with a lemon wedge. Accompanying it are roasted or pan-fried potatoes with herbs, a small portion of coleslaw or cabbage salad with some fresh lettuce, and a small dish of sauce or gravy in the upper part of the plate. The meal is served on a white plate and placed on what looks like a wooden table surface. This appears to be a classic restaurant-style presentation of a traditional European dish.

I don’t usually post photos of food, but this one merited an exception.
On the way from Auburn, Indiana to Kokomo, we stopped for lunch at The Pour House tavern in Gas City. The young woman who tended bar and cooked suggested that we have a tenderloin sandwich, an Indiana specialty. This is what came to our table! The bun in the middle is a regular-size hamburger bun. Wow! The pork tenderloin was so perfectly breaded and fried, and was a real taste treat!

I picked out this breaded vegan chicken product while at Orii, and the owner offered me a sauce packet that she recommended, saying they pair very well together. So nice and helpful! I did try them together and they were indeed delicious!
The packaging on this product I thought was very interesting. The anthropomorphic veggies in the corner are adorable (though I certainly wouldn't want to eat sentient veggies!). The chicken would be adorable too, but the fact that her feathers have all been ripped out is definitely less adorable! A real bird would NOT be happy after their feathers are ripped out! But the imagery of a "plucked chicken" has been normalized in a lot of human society. Human society is very odd indeed!
