We watched this nest for several hours last Saturday most of which the owlet spent behind mom's wing. This image shows the little one peeking out from behind mom's wing. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas

It was nice to get a close shot of the breeding colors. At the rookery, I'm much further away. I was about 8 feet from this bird. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 2/2017

Old Horseshoe Lake is one of six lakes in Brazos Bend State Park, which is located about an hour southwest of Houston and covers roughly 5,000 acres. The land was purchased by the state in 1977 and the park opened to the public in 1984. Activities include camping, fishing, hiking, biking, birding and stargazing. Brazos Bend is a beautiful park and I look forward to visiting again soon! View On White

"The park’s scenic terrain has been carved gently over time by the vigorous Brazos River, which marks its eastern boundary. Fragments of the ancient coastal prairie survive here as do dense bottomland hardwood forests and extensive marshes, making ideal habitats for the American alligator and a rich diversity of other reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. The park is an important refuge for birds, with more than 300 species recorded, and wildflowers abound during the warmer months, drawing a wealth of butterflies." www.brazosbend.org

Brazos Bend State Park re-opened this week. Flooding of the Brazos River caused a two month closer. It was great to get back in there!

Gone With the Wind is my favorite book and this image reminds me of imagery that was in the movie.

Taken at sunset after a wonderful evening of photography at Brazos Bend State Park, TX. A cold front was approaching Houston which made the clouds spectacular.

Later, I'll process an HDR of this image.

No points for art with this set, but hopefully interesting. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas

This was in very little light, but I was glad to get some record of my visit to the nest. 3/18/2015

A cottonmouth lifts its head above the duckweed, scanning the swamp with patient intent. The soft golden light catches its patterned scales, blending them almost perfectly with the floating greens and autumn leaves.

I will always be amazed watching these birds swallow a whole fish.

After a few near falls from the previous perch, this duck moved over to one that was leaning and a little easier to stand on.

A spectacular sunset over the wetland in Brazos Bend State Park in Texas.

This is the second time in my life that I've been blessed to witness a sunset the turns the whole landscape red and I was overjoyed to have my camera with me again to capture the spectacle.

This is mostly how you find them on the trail around the lakes at the park! Notice the third one in the water in the background!

I did take a trip to Brazos Bend State Park (BBSP) just south of Houston last week and although I went in search of birds the animal that was most visible was the resident lizard! Since there are approximately 250 alligators in the park they are EXTREMELY easy to find at this time of the year! The major problem is trying to keep an eye on all of them and not back up into one while trying to take a photo of the other! The gravel paths surrounding the lakes are about 15 to 20 feet wide and you will notice that they are not bashful about climbing out of the water on onto the paths! They say to turn around and go back in the other direction but most people walk around them! It’s a bit unnerving and never feels comfortable and especially when you encounter on that is over 9 feet long! The good news is that no one has ever been attacked at BBSP and people walk around them all the time! If you are queasy about being in their presence then BBSP is not the place for you!
