I don't think I've ever heard a saxophone played as well as this busker played his to some excellent backing tracks, but maybe that's because I was on holiday, it was a warm early evening in St Ives and we just sat there on the pavement with other strangers chilling out to his sounds...whatever, it was wonderful to hear the sound of the sax echoing down the narrow winding streets of St Ives, and this guy could PLAY! Oh, and the little tweety bird that seems to be perched on his shoulder was an fortuitous coincidence that I didn't notice until I was processing the shot! :-)

This window was designed by John Piper and installed in 1985 in honor of the Sixth Viscount Gage, Henry Reginald Gage. It is entitled "Homage to William Blake's The Book of Job". and depicts the Tree of Life in Heavenly Jerusalem. Firle is Old English for "oak", and the sheep depicted are downland sheep. The ram is taken from the Gage family coat of arms.

This is Ross Draper playing his cornet. I used a shallow aperture to frame Ross against the out of focus background. Again, the biggest challenge was the overhead lighting but, I think, the pictures have worked out fairly OK-ish......! :-) How does it look to you...?

The two horns I play:
top - Benge 3X, mid-60s, stamped Burbank but allegedly made in Chicago. Benge collectors drool over it, as it was made in the master's shop. Basically a hand-made Bb trumpet. A little long in the tooth, but somewhat valuable and with a sound that I cannot separate from me. Often played partially disassembled or with numerous rude appenages attached: clips, CD, plastic tubing, pieces of mutes, rubber bands, etc.
bottom - pocket cornet, Indian or Pakistani-made, found on eBay for $50, needed another $80 of work to make it playable. Also a Bb instrument, same range as regular trumpet but with a softer, mellower, more 'singing' sound. Very unreliable in range from F2 - up. These are military band instruments. They're made that way so they're easy to carry around and also so you can march in tight formation without worrying about banging your horn on the fellow in front of you and smashing in your teeth and lips.
The lighting in this practice hall was truly appalling!! There was (as you can clearly see here) strong directional sunlight streaming in through the high windows casting near darkness on one side and, Tungsten and Halogen lighting together!!! It was a nightmare and I had to literally change my WB every time I shifted position!!!!!! But......over all, this was a successful night photographically.....!
