DESCRIPTION
Staalhemel (‘steel sky’) is an interactive installation with 80 steel segments suspended over the visitor’s head as he walks through the space. Tiny hammers tap rhythmic patterns on the steel plates, activated by the brainwaves of the visitor who wears a portable EEG scanner. This responsive environment confronts the viewer with an acoustic representation of the electrical brain activities that govern his being at that very moment.
Staalhemel was developed in cooperation with the Imec research centre at the Philips campus in Eindhoven.

We've all heard of the game portal right? Well in a brainwave I thought of this weapon mechanism utalising the power of portals. Each tube contains four balls in a vacuum. The balls are sent through the portals in sequence until they reach the same velocity as a bullet. The lack of atmosphere in the cylinder allows the balls to accelerate indefinitely. Each trigger pull cycles the balls into the next cylinder and then as the group of four down the barrel. This technology can also allow a normally unwieldy barrel length to be shortened condiderably. On August 17th, a day or two before Lynn was due to catch the ship home from Southampton, she got very upset over her impending departure. Fired up by her sorrow, she had a brainwave: her transatlantic passage home had been booked to coincide with the end of her Russian trip – which hadn't happened! If she could persuade her mom to rearrange certain pre-college commitments, what was to stop her from changing the booking and staying in England even longer?
Well, for a start, ocean liners didn’t cross the Atlantic every day like 747s – twice a month more like. So Lynn would probably have little or no choice over the port or the date, but she’d have taken a rowing boat from Aberdeen if it gave us an extra few days together!
And then, on this matter, Lynn felt that she just had to get her parents' agreement, for she'd been away a whole year and they must have been looking forward to her coming home. Also, Lynn's delayed return would complicate the transition from home to college, but Lynn had a solution for every problem raised. Anyway, her folks could see how much it meant to her, so of course they agreed.
Well, the date the company offered was fantastic: Thursday 29th August – in 12 days’ time. We would have another miraculous extension of our time together: very nearly two weeks!
But there was one snag: the ship would not be departing from a port in the UK ... so where would she be sailing from? Scandinavia? Iberia? North Africa? There's a clue in the photo, for Lynn is covered in a sprinkling of leprechaun dust.

First rehearsal of Sandra Français' Alpha project with Sandra Français (choreographer & dancer), Greg Lion (music), Felix Heaulme (dancer) and Jacques Lavoisier (neuroscience). The dancers are wearing EMOTIV's EPOC neuroheadset allowing their brainwaves to be monitored and transformed into visual digital art in real time.

This is a Boys Club is an experimental on-going solo sound live project which connects electronic music and the use of analog devices such as tape players and typewriters in order to create a soundscape mainly consisting of repetitive sounds / loops plus pre-recorded and live spoken voice and noise layers. A common typewriter becomes a noise machine / interface by use of contact microphones that are sent through an Arduino-microcontroller triggering a pure data patch in order to play back noisy sound files (the artist’s own brainwave recordings she got after an EEG).
