This week is planning and inservice week for faculty - students start on Monday! I've been offering optional BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) sessions in the afternoons, but had to promise chocolate and other 'distractors,' in addition to inservice points! :) The focus, though, is on learning new web-based tools and using them appropriately to engage students in their classrooms. Though the numbers have been small, the motivation has been high ... and we've included opportunities for play, as well! Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL

Smart Way is a highly addictive strategic turn-based puzzle game, guaranteed to attract brainteaser enthusiasts.
The challenge is straightforward and simple. The goal of the game is to outmaneuver and outsmart the super-clever character that is trying to escape the game board by placing obstacles around it. As the game progresses, this simple task gets harder due to the growing difficulty of new levels that are characterized by the increased presence of ‘bonuses’ – fields that enable the escaping character to evade the obstacles easier and faster.
Smart Way is richly themed with 6 different characters: a rabbit, a hedgehog, a sea crab, a fish, a cobra snake and a chameleon. Apart from the characters, there are 3 different playing environments available for players to enjoy: the desert, the meadow and the ocean. The pioneer version offers 60 mind-boggling levels. The subsequent editions will expand the number of environments, levels and characters, according to the developers.
Helped along by turning this into a black and white photo. My little brain teaser puzzle from the car strikes again.

In your hotel room, you see a candy machine that takes nickels. You have a quarter, a dime, and three pennies. How do you get the candy?
A young boy in a magical kingdom was one day lying on a grassy hill. It was a sunny day but the sky had big white bushy clouds nonetheless. This young boy loved watching the clouds and he would try and see what shape they were. While looking up he saw three clouds pass over him. Two of them took the "C" shape and the other took an "O" shape. As he watched them, he saw them moved very intricately until they formed a cross shape! The boy was marveled by this and ran to the kingdom's puzzle maker who then made this puzzle for the boy so he could always replicate what happened with the clouds. Now you can reassemble these shapes just the way this boy observed how the clouds did!

Life has kept me b*u*s*y this last month or two. Soccer/TeeBall/Trips and teaching havent left much time for online play. I love all the RL busyness, but I hope to have more down time soon so I can check in on what everyone is doing in the Flickrverse.
Tonight I did pause to watch the movie twilight. Twice. But the first time hardly counted with all the little blonde headed interruptions.

If you need a hint, check out this riddle:
Discovered in Africa, I spread like a tide
To become a hot staple known the world wide.
A necessity to some, a treasure to many,
I'm best enjoyed among pleasant company.
Some like me hot and some like me cold.
Some prefer mild, others only bold.
Some take me straight, while some like to savor
My essence to which has been added a flavor.
So put down your cares and sit awhile with me;
I'll send you back refreshed and full of energy.
Educational value in partial v. whole, branding, and riddles? Absolutely! :)
We picked up a reputation on ship for the little games they had, and we almost won the library games, but while we had the brainteasers down, someone else was far more skilled with the daily quizzes.
On the other hand, Monica always won the Name That Tune and almost(?) always the Showstorm Trivia (pictures, music, and movies), and we almost always took the Team Trivia as well. We now have numerous Holland America branded pins, cards, bags, coasters, and mugs that we're not completely sure what to do with.

Is the dancer spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise?
If she appears to be turning clockwise, you're supposedly more right-brained in your thinking, and left-brained if she spins counter-clockwise.
Does she change directions?
I find this fascinating, but have no idea how it works.

Christian (aka danger_nelson) taught me how to solve a Rubik's Cube last year. My record for solving one is about 1 minute and 30 seconds.
For a first try, I'm happy with how this turned out. I already have some improvements for version 2.0.
