Steven Strogatz has a way of finding rhythm in places most people overlook. In his office at Malott Hall at Cornell, and later in the Space Sciences Building at the SPIF, that rhythm came alive in a simple but elegant experiment. Two small metronomes ticked on a shared platform, gradually aligning their beats as if discovering a shared pulse. Strogatz leaned in, smiling as the synchronization unfolded. The moment captured both his joy and his curiosity, the twin forces that have guided his life in mathematics.

For decades, Strogatz has explored the hidden order beneath the world’s apparent chaos. His work has spanned from the synchrony of fireflies flashing in unison to the oscillations of the human heart. He has revealed how patterns emerge naturally when systems, whether biological, physical, or social, interact in just the right way. His research on coupled oscillators, complex networks, and nonlinear dynamics has reshaped how scientists think about everything from brain function to the spread of ideas.

At Cornell, Strogatz is known as a gifted communicator who bridges the gap between advanced mathematics and everyday experience. His lectures attract students from across the university. In books such as Sync, The Joy of x, and Infinite Powers, he writes with clarity and wonder, turning abstract ideas into stories that feel alive. His voice carries the same enthusiasm whether he is explaining calculus or describing the geometry of friendship.

What sets him apart is not only his command of mathematics but his warmth and wit. He listens as carefully as he speaks, often finding metaphors in the natural world or in a casual conversation with a colleague. His humor disarms. His curiosity invites. Watching him adjust the metronomes, eyes bright behind his glasses, it is easy to understand why students and collaborators describe him as both rigorous and kind.

Beneath it all is a belief that mathematics is not separate from life but a language that reveals its beauty. The dance of the metronomes, the firing of neurons, the movement of planets, and the laughter shared across a classroom all express a single truth about connection and harmony.

In person, Strogatz radiates calm delight in the act of discovery. The photograph from that afternoon shows him resting on his arms, thoughtful, as the metronomes begin to fall into sync before him. It is a quiet moment that suggests something larger, a glimpse of the universal tendency toward order and the human impulse to understand it.

Title: “7 Surprising Health Benefits of Your Daily Coffee Ritual”

Introduction

Coffee, the aromatic elixir of life, is a staple in many people’s daily routine. It’s more than just a morning wake-up call; it’s a comforting ritual that jumpstarts our day. But did you know that this humble beverage can also offer a plethora of health benefits? Let’s dive in and uncover the seven surprising health benefits of your daily coffee ritual.

1. Boosts Physical Performance

Caffeine, the main component in coffee, stimulates the nervous system, increasing adrenaline levels in your body. This prepares you for intense physical exertion, improving your overall performance. So, next time you’re heading for a workout, consider having a cup of coffee for that extra energy boost.

2. Enhances Mental Sharpness

Coffee can help keep your brain alert and focused. It blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine, increasing other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine. This leads to enhanced firing of neurons, improving various aspects of brain function, including memory, mood, vigilance, and reaction times.

3. Rich in Antioxidants

Coffee is packed with antioxidants, which fight inflammation and protect cells from damage. In fact, studies have shown that coffee may be one of the largest sources of antioxidants in the Western diet, surpassing fruits and vegetables combined.

4.

KILKENNY - The annual Science Foundation Ireland Science Summit in Kilkenny. Taking place over two-days (2nd-3rd November) with the theme For Whats Next, the summit provides a platform for 300 members of Irelands research community to discuss Irelands science policy, programmes and progress. Pictured are Joint recipients of the SFI researcher of the year award 2015 - Professor Geraldine Boylan - Professor of Neonatal Physiology and a world-leading expert in newborn brain function and Professor Louise Kenny - Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist (joint Directors of INFANT).

Ten USAMRICD personnel visited the center to teach children about four senses: touch, sight, hearing and smell with hands-on activities. The children also learned about personal protective equipment.

“Our five senses connect us to the world around us and all senses connect to our brain,” Hoard-Fruchey said. “At USAMRICD, we have many neuroscientists and we are keenly aware of how import brain function is for quality of life. These activities are meant to get very young children excited about science and thinking about our five senses in relation to both our brain power and our interactions with daily life.”

William Grey Walter made this artificial creature which was a light seeker but obstacle avoider: two useful skills for any tortoise. (The see-through shell is for our benefit, not original.) Walter was a neurologist who was interested in brain function rather than in tortoises per se.

Alan Turing was interested in the question of whether machines could think.

do you ever have one of those days where everything and everyone annoys you but then there are like two people who you have completely normal conversations with?

well...that was today.

i wish i had a normal brain function.

Squishy ratchets up the Cute, I lose all higher brain function.

Why We Need Sleep

If you have ever felt foggy after a poor night’s sleep, it won’t surprise you that sleep significantly impacts brain function. First, a healthy amount of sleep is vital for “brain plasticity,” or the brain’s ability to adapt to input. If we sleep too little, we become unable to process what we’ve learned during the day and we have more trouble remembering it in the future. Researchers also believe that sleep may promote the removal of waste products from brain cells—something that seems to occur less efficiently when the brain is awake.Tips for Better Sleep

Good sleep habits (sometimes referred to as “sleep hygiene”) can help you get a good night’s sleep.

Some habits that can improve your sleep health:

-Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends

-Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature

-Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smart phones, from the bedroom

-Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime

-Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night.

Sleep is vital to the rest of the body too. When people don’t get enough sleep, their health risks rise. Symptoms of depression, seizures, high blood pressure and migraines worsen. Immunity is compromised, increasing the likelihood of illness and infection. Sleep also plays a role in metabolism: Even one night of missed sleep can create a prediabetic state in an otherwise healthy person.

This project:

"The purpose of the project is to develop a device allowing monkeys to be free from chairing while experiments are conducted. Direct measurements of neurochemical substances in the brain from free moving non-human primates are significantly important for understanding complex brain function and developing treatment strategies for brain disorders in humans. During the past semesters, BME students designed and built devices. However, this device still needs further refinement for actual application. The development of the device for microdialysis experiments will require creativity, intellectual exercise and ergonomic expertise. We will be working to improve on the device created last semester that protects the microdialysis apparatus used during cranial experiments on non-human primates. This involves continued efforts to reduce the weight of the device, secure it around the monkey’s head, and make it better able to cushion the microdrive unit."

Right brainers rarely file things for fear we may forget about them or worse, never be able to find them again. We use "pile cabinets" as a flat surface to put papers on top of. I have found that even though filing is a left-brain function, it works for the things that I need to save, but don't need now. As you can see, I have two file cabinets and they are full—but I can find what I need when I need it so they help create order out of chaos.

Who else is burning #Sage today / tonight ?

Sage is a fantastic herb for teas, and for burning to cleanse the air, renew the energies, and detox from pollutants / indoor pollution.

Sage can help preserve and enhance memory.

It is linked to strengthening brain functions. It can cross the blood brain barrier to halt free radical damage in the brain thanks to its anti-oxidant glutathione, which is used to treat brain degenerative diseases.

Sage has anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties… Hello !

It tastes amazing with Raw Cacao Elixirs.

See the "Beach Walk 649 - Kluge and Improvise" video

I read a review of a new book, Kluge - The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind that describes a lot of our brain function and memory processes as actually quite improvised, and contextual, not particularly logical or repeatable. That is a contrast to the methodical approach of computers, yet one that suits us being able to take action on the fly. As life becomes less and less predictable, being able to improvise is a more appealing skill IMO. FYI, kluge is a computer term for banding things together in unpredictable ways.Hawaiian word: Haku wale: improvisereef.beachwalks.tv This video was originally shared on blip.tv by beachwalks with a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license.

The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.

Honey is the only food that includes all the substances necessary to sustain life, including enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and water; and it's the only food that contains "pinocembrin", an antioxidant associated with improved brain functioning.

Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors, compared with only 62 in fruit flies and 79 in mosquitoes. Their exceptional olfactory abilities include kin recognition signals, social communication within the hive, and odor recognition for finding food. Their sense of smell was so precise that it could differentiate hundreds of different floral varieties and tell whether a flower carried pollen or nectar from metres away.

A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.

The bee's brain is oval in shape and only about the size of a sesame seed, yet it has remarkable capacity to learn and remember things and is able to make complex calculations on distance travelled and foraging efficiency.

Honey bees communicate with one another by "dancing".

binaural beats are auditory brainstem responses which originate in the superior olivary nucleus of each hemisphere. they result from the interaction of two different auditory impulses, originating in opposite ears, below 1000 Hz and which differ in frequency between one and 30 Hz (Oster, 1973). For example, if a pure tone of 400 Hz is presented to the right ear and a pure tone of 410 Hz is presented simultaneously to the left ear, an amplitude modulated standing wave of 10 Hz, the difference between the two tones, is experienced as the two wave forms mesh in and out of phase within the superior olivary nuclei. this binaural beat is not heard in the ordinary sense of the word (the human range of hearing is from 20-20,000 Hz). it is perceived as an auditory beat and theoretically can be used to entrain specific neural rhythms through the frequency-following response (FFR)--the tendency for cortical potentials to entrain to or HYPERLINK "javascript:sndReq('resonance');%20javascript:sndDos('blank');"resonate at the frequency of an external stimulus. thus, it is theoretically possible to utilize a specific binaural-beat frequency as a consciousness management technique to entrain a specific cortical rhythm.

resonant entrainment of oscillating systems is a well-understood principle within the physical sciences. if a tuning fork designed to produce a frequency of 440 Hz is struck (causing it to oscillate) and then brought into the vicinity of another 440 Hz tuning fork, the second tuning fork will begin to oscillate. the first tuning fork is said to have entrained the second or caused it to resonate.

the physics of entrainment apply to biosystems as well. of interest here are the electromagnetic brain waves. the electrochemical activity of the brain results in the production of electromagnetic wave forms which can be objectively measured with sensitive equipment. brain waves change frequencies based on neural activity within the brain. because neural activity is electrochemical, brain function can be modified through the introduction of specific chemicals (drugs), by altering the brain's electromagnetic environment through induction, or through resonant entrainment techniques.

#RT How to Boost Your Mood and Feel Good with the Power of Nature | ABI RESOURCES

Spending time in nature and engaging in outdoor activities can be beneficial for individuals recovering from brain injury, stroke, or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Research suggests that exposure to natural environments can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are common emotional challenges that individuals with brain injuries may face during recovery.

In addition, spending time in nature can help improve cognitive function, such as attention, memory, and executive functioning, which can be affected by brain injuries. Being in nature also provides opportunities for physical activity, which can improve motor skills, balance, and coordination, all of which are important for individuals in the recovery process.

Furthermore, exposure to natural environments can promote neural plasticity, which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself and form new neural connections. This can help facilitate recovery and improve overall brain function following a brain injury or stroke.

Overall, incorporating nature-based activities and spending time outdoors can be a valuable addition to a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for individuals recovering from brain injury, stroke, or TBI.

n this article, you will learn about sleeping benefits for the health of your brain, heart, skin, hair, eyes and how sleeping affects weight loss.

How Sleeping is Important?

Sleep is a huge factor in health. Besides being necessary for our physical and mental well-being, sleep also helps to regulate many daily functions such as blood pressure, stress levels, and appetite.

Sleep deprivation can lead to serious health consequences such as cognitive impairment. Additionally the quality of your sleep greatly determines how effective you are during the waking hours.

It is recommended that adults get between 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

It is important to get enough sleep because the study shows that sleep deprivation is linked to increased anxiety, drowsiness, depression, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and heart disease.

Many people think that sleep is just a necessary part of life, but they don’t know the ways it can benefit their health and overall quality of life.

Sleeping is critical to a healthy lifestyle. When you sleep, your body rebuilds itself for the next day. You wake up feeling refreshed, revitalized and less tired!

Sleeping Benefits for Brain

The word ‘sleep’ is pretty much always associated with the term ‘power nap,’ which is a necessary part of the daily routine for many people. Naps are a quick way to boost mental alertness and reduce tiredness, but what about the benefits that sleep has on your brain’s health?

Sleeping for one hour is the equivalent of exercising for 90 minutes! When you sleep well, your brain releases chemicals that keep you calm during the night and:

Boosts your mood and improves cognitive function

Reduces stress and increases productivity

Lowers your risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

Sleeping and Dementia

People who sleep less than 7 hours per day have a 40% higher risk of developing dementia. Sleep is important for brain function and healthy aging so I try to get as much sleep as possible.

Sleeping and Alzheimer’s

A study from the University of Pennsylvania has linked a lack of sleep with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. In the study, subjects with sleep disorders were x3 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s compared to those without sleep disorders.

Sleeping and Memory

Sleeping benefits your memory in a number of different ways. First of all, the frontal lobe of your brain is a major hub for memory formation. When you sleep, this area is at its most active state so that it can create new memories (neural pathways) to protect and retain the ones you already have. Secondly, when you sleep, your brain eliminates waste products such as cellular components and hormones from your body.

Zeolite is formed from a group of minerals that commonly occur together. It may be colourless, clear, white, and blue or peach. Apophyllite, Okenite, Pectolite, Prehnite and Stilbite are all in the Zeolite group and are commonly from India.

Commonly white or colourless, and sometimes though rarely green Apophyllite often appears in cubic or pyramidal shapes. Most Specimens come from India but can also be found in Italy, Germany, Iceland, Greenland and Brazil.

Pyramidal crystals are said to aid rejuvenation of the body, while both pyramidal and cubic are said to be good for travel, truth and brain function.
