KODAK T-MAX100

Each year, Gallery Route One in Point Reyes invites over a hundred artists to create unique works of art using a wooden box.

Here are the inspiring artworks they created this year: they range in style from whimsical to poignant and thought-provoking. These photos were taken on closing day, when the gallery organized a live auction for each of this year’s 150 boxes. The proceeds support the gallery’s exhibits and community programs.

Two of the boxes were created by members of our art community: Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain) contributed an illuminated box called ‘Magical’, while Geo Monley and Meryl Rubenstein made ‘Les Puzzles.’

Members of ‘Pataphysical Studios came to cheer for their peers -- Dr. Really was the highest bidder for Dr. Rindbrain’s piece, which was thus kept in the family. After the show, we all went to Stellina to celebrate over a nice dinner.

A jewellery box I made for a design technology project, and a matching necklace, in the style of charles rennie mackintosh.

Just minutes before the scene had been quiet. The lonely signal box perched on the straight stretch of country railway track, the sound of birdsong and a gentle breeze swishing the long grass. Slowly the metallic hum and the ringing of the rusty tracks indicated the approach of a train. Swelling in volume the tracks screeched and rattled...just seconds now. In the signal box, his hands resting on the controls, Henry Crabtree stared expectantly through the dirty glass. He'd had a bad day...it was about to get worse. The packed 5.55 and the 6.15 commuter trains instead of passing each other met head on at full speed. The apocalyptic shock wave as 180 tons of metal, glass and humanity collided with it mirror image at a combined speed of 180 miles an hour destroyed the signal box instantly. The initial devastating concussion replaced a split second later by the screaming of tearing metal and shattering glass...the incident was heard miles away in the village. Curious customers at the pub congregated in the beer garden discussing what it could be. As the sound subsided, the mass pile of tangled destruction settled...the sound of the swishing grass returned...the birdsong replaced with cries and moans.

Work in Progress photos of my 'Boxed In' Quilt inspired by Jason Yenter

It was a rainy day in Portland, and sometimes if you drive East through the The Gorge you can get away from the rain - but not today!

I took a right at the town of Hood River and headed up the Hood River Valley, famous for their apple orchards. No blossoms today, too early in the year. I found these mountains of apple boxes stacked in front of a packing plant, waiting for the harvest. It was a long drive for just a few images, but I think these are kind of cool!

Possibly some kind of art installation: a big, metal box sitting on the old rail ties of the High Line. Seen around 27th street.

There are a number of these Police boxes dotted around glasgow, including a red one! I would love to see the inside of this, does anyone know who I should contact?

Does anyone know the locations of the others?

"Cardboard" is a term we often use for many types of boxes and containers, but it isn't used in the paper industry, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Corrugated boxes constituted the largest single component of municipal solid waste in 2009 -- 11.2 percent -- as well as the largest category of of materials Americans recovered 81.3 percent of corrugated boxes for recycling. Recyclers separate corrugated boxes from other paper because paper mills produce different grades of material, depending on what is being recovered

We are here to protect the envierment, re-use, recycle Th boxes of all types from gaylords to moving boxes.

Call or write us a e mail about your boxes and packing material.

The Thalhimers box has significance because my mother worked there for the bulk of my young childhood. I was sad to see it was too damaged to keep but that's what the camera is for!

Or Mail boxes as the Americans may call them

I decorated, (altered? or is that different?) a shoe box to store my Tags, ATC's, Cards etc in & overall I am happy with it. Each side is different; the inside is bare except for where the papers lap over; evenly I might add ;-) lol. The papers were all magazine freebies, everything else is from my stash & I added sparkly ribbon to each corner.

On this side I added a flower and skeleton leaves, a shrink plastic birdcage & some punched butterflies & dragonflies.

Now I know there is plenty room for improvement and many different ways it could be done, but if you have any hints & tips I would be most grateful. Thank you.

A gift of wine from a friend. I thought the little devil face insignia was kinda cool.

Looks like a male Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) or Three-toed Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis)

Anyone know which?
