The name " Peebles" probably derives from the ancient Cumbric (an early form of Welsh) word " Pebyl", meaning " a place where tents are pitched".
"The historic core of Peebles - the Old Town - lies to the west of the junction of the River Tweed ad Eddleston Water. By the reign of King David (1124-1153) Peebles was already a Royal Burgh. King William I (1165-1214) "The Lion", confirmed that the two chief courts of justice were to be held annually either in Edinburgh or Peebles.

During the wars of Independence, King Edward I of England visited Peebles in 1301 and 1306. Edward appointed his man - William de Dureme - sheriff in place of Sir Simon Fraser of Neidpath, who had joined with William Wallace in his attempt to free Scotland.
In the 15th and 16th centuries many visits were made to the town by the monarchy, King James III in particular was a frequent visitor. Peebles relatively untouched by the conflicts - both internal and external - that characterised life in the Borders at that time. There were however three major events in the 16th century. In late 1549, Peebles was almost completely razed by the English. In April 1585 the population of the Borders was directed by the King James VI to meet at Peebles in May in an attempt to halt the "crimes committed on the borders" the reining or cross border raids and, from 1650-1651, the Cromwell's Army occupied the town.
The 18th century was not a good time for Peebles as poverty and hunger were common in the Burgh. In 1741, 1774 and again in 1783 the council found it necessary to purchase food for the inhabitants. The Industrial Revolution did not immediately affect Peebles and recovery from these dark years was slow.

The 19th century was a time of progress from a poor start when the town was described in 1801 as being "stagnant and almost lifeless", due in no small way to the privations of the previous century. The arrival of the Railway in 1855 brought an increase in trade and the growth of industry brought a deal of prosperity and expansion. In 20th century, the increased ownership of the motor car after Second World War, led to an improved road network and the line closed in 1962.
Today, Peebles is the third largest town in the Borders and occupies both banks of the River Tweed. The road network enables people to travel easily to Edinburgh or elsewhere in the Borders. Through all the changes of recent years, Peebles still retains its historic layout and there is much to interest the visitor."
Today I passed the place where the former border between the two Germanies existed until 1990. I will never forget that concret-wall which I had to pass in order just to visit relatives!

Lavendula angustifolia vormt met zijn prachtige bloei een mooi contrast met het frisse groen van de Platanus hispanica en buxus sempervirens, Lavendel is het op zijn mooist in grote groepen (zoals hierboven). De grote grijze beton platen laten de border extra spreken.

The pillow says it all..."I'm just a rag doll in a barbie doll world". Ranger is a border collie that cant herd sheep...he's the border collie version of a rag doll.
I started out this week with the worst case of pneumonia I have ever had (sorry I have missed making comments - catching up now). I had originally hoped to get a shot of Ranger 'not' herding sheep, but we never made it outside. I couldn't think of anything good - so I went with what I know. I love quilts, teddy bears and my dogs - so why not combine them. Then I remembered this rag doll I had with the pillow & saying. It was PERFECT!
Ranger is the easiest dog to photograph EVER. I When he saw me laying out the quilt & teddy bears he walked into the room, happy as can be and laid down on the quilt, turned and looked at me and said "Okay, where are the treats?". He kept his stay, as I piled teddy bears and dolls all over him, clicking away. He is intently watching the camera - because he knows when he looks at the camera he gets a treat. Smart boy!
I shot this manually with exposure 1/20 , f/5.0, ISO 640, FL 33mm - no special lighting in the room other than the overhead and natural light coming in the window. I played with the white balance a bit because I wanted that slightly yellow aged look. Very little post processing, other than the frame and vignette. I am happy with it..
Constructive criticism is happily welcomed!

In 1938 Czechoslovakia mobilized against the German threats of war, but hat to give in to the Munich Agreement and withdraw from the border fortifications, even if the army was fully capable to stand against the Wehrmacht. After this not only Germany, but also Poland and Hungary ripped pieces of land from the country, and there were also extensive fights with insurgents, which cost lives of many Czechoslovak soldiers and gendarmes. Today it´s a tradition to reenact how the situation could be, when we would have defended ourselfs. It´s a fact that Hitler was affraid of the Czechoslovak military, which at that time had better tanks, more heavy guns, and a very effective fortification system. Of course we win in the reenactments :-)
Went for a walk to the University, it was homecoming. (Arizona lost: Utah 34, Arizona 21.)
Went to the library to see if a Google search on their computers turned up "666isMONEY' by typing in "666," it did.

Border Dynamics
. . . . Last year, they [Alberto Morackis and Guadalupe Serrano] attracted widespread attention in Mexico and the United States for "Border Dynamics," a set of four monumental human figures that leaned against the wall in the same location. The piece traveled to the UA last fall, and stood outside the student union--complete with an improvised border wall--for two months.
The 14-foot painted metal figures extended outward from the fence, with their feet in the Mexican soil and only their hands or backs touching the corrugated metal. The message was ambiguous. Either they were trying to push the wall down, climb over it, or keep back the hordes on the other side.
The uncertain fate of "Border Dynamics" is instructive about the pitfalls of political border art. Now in storage, it never took its planned place on the Arizona side of the border wall. . . .

Border Patrol agent Michael Philyaw assists Mrs. Dittman to light her candle during last night’s candlelight vigil. Mrs. Dittman's husband was killed in the line of duty while working as a Border Patrol agent.
I take comfort in knowing that our art galleries are secure and in the hands of the best trained security staff the government budget can buy.
Rumblemumbles has worked for the state government for 18 months now, and currently is bored stiff, just like her friend here.
The BOUNCERS
My three-year-old Border Collie, Gin, is an international traveler. :-) I first met her in November of 2022 when she was imported from Ireland by a Canadian sheepdog trainer that I train with. I was drawn to Gin right away and let the trainer know about my interest. Eventually the timing was right; Gin joined our family in March of 2024 and now lives with us in the Pacific Northwest (USA).
Skeena District Commercial Vehicle and Safety Enforcement (CVSE) officers participated in a multiagency commercial vehicle safety check in the Yukon, just over the BC border.
CVSE staff were providing technical support and advice to The Yukon CVSA and RCMP. The event took place May 17 and 18th.

Robson’s was persuaded to take two Leyland Roadtrains Border Ophelia and Border Hamlet as long-term demonstrators, following less than perfect back-up experience with previous big Leylands. Although both were returned to Leyland in December, they had impressed sufficiently to secure an order for 16 similar tractor units from Solway Leyland DAF in Carlisle (26-Jan-25).
