Desaguadero or Chaka Marka is a town on the Bolivian-Peruvian border. On the Bolivian side it is situated in the La Paz Department, Ingavi Province, Desaguadero Municipality, Desaguadero Canton.
Crossing over the Murray River from one state to another, G521 and VR veteran S313 "Alfred Deakin" trundle 9371 empty Qube Deniliquin rice service from Appleton Dock through Echuca and Moama.
S313 made an appearance back onto 9371/9072 at the start of the month, being loaned to Qube from Steamrail.
This creek runs along the border of my mother's property. It is nearly completely inaccessible because of the verdant patches of poison ivy, but this year I managed to get a nice shot from a bridge without getting an itchy rash.
Fog covers the Lewis and Clark Valley on the Idaho-Washington border while a layer of low hanging clouds floats above at sunset.
Gelsenkirchen
The Ruhr area ('Ruhrgebiet') is named after the river that borders it to the south and is the largest urban area in Germany with over five million people. It is mostly known as a densely-populated industrial area. By 1850 there were almost 300 coal mines in operation in the Ruhr area. The coal was exported or processed in coking ovens into coke, used in blast furnaces, producing iron and steel. Because of the industrial significance, it had been a target from the start of the war, yet "the organized defences and the large amount of industrial pollutants produced a semi-permanent smog or industrial haze that hampered accurate bombing". During World War II, the industry and cities in the Ruhr area were heavily bombed. The combination of the lack of historic city centres, which were burned to ashes, and (air) pollution has given the area and the cities a bad reputation. Especially because it is so close to the Netherlands, I thought it would be an interesting area to visit for a little trip. I have spent three nights at a campsite on the Ruhr and visited six cities.
Gelsenkirchen is the 25th largest city in Germany and the fourth largest in the Ruhr region with a population of 260,000. Gelsenkirchen remained a small settlement until the nineteenth century, when the industrial revolution led to a rapid population increase. It became an independent city in 1896. The city used to have many torches due to the excess of coke oven gas from the coking plants, which gave Gelsenkirchen its nickname Stadt der 1000 Feuer (City of 1000 Fires). Gelsenkirchen is primarily known for its soccer club: Schalke 04, which is named after the Gelsenkirchener district Schalke.
Gelsenkirchen suffers from problems including high unemployment due to its former reliance on the coal and steel industry, high crime rates and a large amount of vacant houses caused by population decline. The population reached an all-time high in 1959 with 391,745 inhabitants; the forecast for 2025 lies at only 226,100 inhabitants, making it one of the fastest shrinking cities in Germany. Gelsenkirchen now tries to turn around things by expanding its service sector and positioning itself as a hub for solar technology.
Even though 75% of the city was destroyed during World War II, there are still plenty of remains of the architectural past.

The Liebfrauenkirche was constructed in 1894.
In November 2004 I rode on an excursion train on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad that originated in Angola, Indiana, and made a roundtrip to Hillsdale, Michigan. On the return trip, we made a photo stop at the appropriately named State Line Road. I am standing in Indiana watching the train come out of Michigan. (Scanned from a slide)

This is the view north from camp on our first night in the Mt. Baker Wilderness. Over the valley Tomyhoi Peak, Mt. Larrabee, and Pleiades East Peak can be seen skirting the Canadian border.
We sat and had lunch, enjoyed the view and made a few photos. For this shot, I scrambled up a precarious slope (which I slide down more than once) to get above Sarah and provide a wider view of the valley.

I took my border collie, Kodiak, out for a hike in Angeles National Forest. After driving through the desert the lush pine Angeles forest was such a welcome site. There were still wildflowers in bloom and small patches of snow on the shaded mountain peaks.
He has discoid lupus erythematosus (aka collie nose), an autoimmune disorder that causes his skin to blister and bleed when exposed to UV rays. He has been about two weeks without a Lupus-bleed-blister flare up. I thought that with proper sun protection he could manage a hike. He did well on the hike, however a few days later his nose was pink and starting to bleed a teeny bit.

There has been much discussion about the construction of a wall between the United States and Mexico. However, this discussion largely ignores the fact that a wall -- or fence -- already exists in many places along the border in the more populated areas. This image captures the layers of fencing used to divide the US city of El Paso, Texas, and the Mexican city of Juarez, Chihuahua. This fence runs along a portion of the concreted Rio Grande River and what is known as the border highway in El Paso.
