The Sedlec Ossuary (Czech: Kostnice v Sedlci) is a small Roman Catholic chapel, located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints (Czech: Hřbitovní kostel Všech Svatých) in Sedlec, a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic. The ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, whose bones have in many cases been artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel. The ossuary is among the most visited tourist attractions of the Czech Republic, attracting over 200,000 visitors yearly.
Four enormous bell-shaped mounds occupy the corners of the chapel. An enormous chandelier of bones, which contains at least one of every bone in the human body, hangs from the center of the nave with garlands of skulls draping the vault. Other works include piers and monstrances flanking the altar, a large Schwarzenberg coat of arms, and the signature of Rint, also executed in bone, on the wall near the entrance.
During normal bone development and fracture healing, cartilage is transformed into bone. Osteoclasts, a specialized type of cell, eat the cartilage, creating a passageway for blood vessels, marrow, and other bone cells. In this image of cartilage (purple and white) from a young mouse femur, osteoclasts (red) surround a blood vessel filled with red blood cells (yellow). In contrast to normal osteoclasts, the cells seen here have only a single nucleus due to the lack of a gene involved in osteoclast development. This research program aims to understand how large, bone resorbing osteoclasts form, and whether preventing them from fusing together is a way to control bone loss in osteoporosis, arthritis, or other conditions. This image was a winner in the 2015 BioArt contest of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

A movie I loved in 1987 and recently re-watched on DVD with some hilarious directors cuts and bonus disc of interviews with the original cast giving background. I guess you could sort of call this the "pink flamingos" of skateboard videos. It's so absurd it's great, and they skaters actually try to act. Well, a little.

In bones 1-5,the über-analytical Dr. Brennan has never been shy about her doubts when it comes to theology, but if she is ever going to get religion, this is the night. The series' winter finale finds the team investigating the charred remains of what appears to be a demon — complete with horns and a tail — found on the altar of a Catholic church. The case spooks the God-fearing Booth, but he and Brennan are going to have to tip over some sacred cows to get to the bottom of this mystery. Joshua Malina guest stars.
The weather has been a major bone of contention for a lot people in the Ottawa area. I enjoy the occasional rainy days when I can hear the rain drops falling on our roof. But spring 2013 has so far has been rainy, wet, miserable and grey for the most part with the odd sunny day thrown in to remind us that it is a possibility. I keep telling myself that it is better than that white fluffy stuff falling from the sky. Everywhere i go i hear people talking about the weather forecast and how apparently it will start getting nicer and warmer "next" week. I have been hearing that for .. well … "weeks"!
We started off last weekend with rain and grey skies. We had progressed to a beautiful sunny Sunday. I went for a walk in the Dow's Lake area early in the morning. I can't even begin to tell you how great it felt to be walking in the sun. I made my way through the Fletcher Wildlife Gardens, the Arboretum and finally to the marshy area close to the Dow's Lake Pavilion.
The red-winged blackbirds love wet marshy areas. These birds are abundant in the Americas and this area has its fair share of them. They are common birds. However, they are one of my favourite to watch. Male Red-winged Blackbirds will do everything they can to get noticed by the ladies and their familiar “konk-a-ree” is always a pleasure to hear. They are speedy little flyers and go from cattail to cattail only stopping for a few moments to belt out a joyful chorus of "kook-a-rees". I watched these guys in the marsh for about an hour before moving on.
At first, i just watched and stood quietly to let them get used to my presence. They were flying around and chasing each other. Presumably to claim their territory and mate? They kept coming closer and closer as they became more accustomed to my being there. A real pleasure to watch and observe. I eventually pulled the camera to my eye and started tracking these guys with the challenge i had set for myself of catching them in different poses and in flight. Here are a few of the moments that i caught.

From proximal femur of a 7-year-old boy. Classical look of "vowen bone" seemingly emanating directly from the spindle cells around. No osteoblastic rimming. These abnormal, "vowen" trabeculae can resemble anything from the letters of the chinese alphabet to the profile of a "jumping goat", like that in here!!! If you don't see it, forget it!

I was bored working in the photo lab today, so I decided to do a little project.
I first googled "skeleton" and found one that I thought I could kind of draw and drew it out on some tracing paper. I did it on tracing paper so it would show through to the photo paper when I exposed it to the light (the photo below). Then I wrote directly on the photo paper with a sharpie. and placed the ribcage drawing on top of that. Then I exposed it and developed it. I put a foggy negative in the enlarger so that it would make it less dense. :) I love doing stuff like this. The words are lyrics to John Mark McMillan's song Skeleton Bones.
