One GP-9 and the U25/28C fleet are parked in the yard. Derailments of these units were blamed on problems with the trucks. The 5655 had its trucks rebuilt before the decision was made to retire the 5600 fleet.

BN 1834-1811-1823 (all former Great Northern GP-9's) have gone international if only by feet. The units have delivered their train from Shelby, MT to Sweetgrass and are parked across the border waiting for the Canadian Pacific to deliver their train from Lethbridge, Alberta.
BN 5605 east, with a load of welded rail, is crossing the impressive Missouri River bridge on the west side of the state's capital city. 10-21-73
Coal loads at Ardmore, SD, an 8 square block community one mile north of the state line on the Butte Subdivision and 30 miles NW of Crawford, NE.

The grain train's front end has just made the top of Providence Hill. The Santa Fe seemed always early to renumber (or repaint) for its mergers. The BNSF 5204 spoils a pure BN set of power.

Big city railroading Montana style. All the grade crossings are behind and the east bound accelerates out of downtown.
The fuel tender was filled in Laurel and is destined to be used with the helpers at Sheridan, WY. The last unit has just been painted in Livingston with a variation of BN's "classic" paint scheme.
At the time, the Sheridan Hotel was the tallest building in Montana.

A former BN SD60M has a westbound junk train rolling through the slight curve at Macungie, PA on a grey and overcast afternoon.
Burlington Northern had a nice looking officer train too (once) with a matching set of rebuilt F9's to pull it.Then the BNSF merger came along. You can still see these F's at the railroad museum in Union, IL.
The east bound is waiting for a stalled freight to get off the Winston hill.

The local to Great Falls has made its pickup and waits for a train to pass.
Fresh Cascade Green paint hides the former Northern Pacific brown on the station.

Train 120 on the way to Laurel.
Montana's I-90 had a lot of single lane interstate highways and the state was finally turning them into true four lanes.

Amazing the power it took to move 101 cars at the time. Even a GP was added and they got a helper at Bozeman.

One of the reasons I liked the BN was it retained a lot of cool stuff through the 70's and beyond. The roundhouse at Missoula was a fine example of some of the neat things to be seen. 2089 and 6530 rest in front along with a 60's Chevy pickup while 5711 and 1638 are closer to the house and a few geeps are inside the stalls on June 14, 1979.
At the top of Marias Pass. Train orders and manned stations were still common.
The station was moved closer to Highway 2 and converted to a bar and restaurant. The plan for it failed and the building now stands unused.

After a spring snow storm. The Yellowstone River is on the left and an irrigation canal to the right. Train #223.

NW 2R delivering to Scherer Brothers Lumber in NE Minneapolis with a 5 man crew; the 5th of which is throwing a switch while the others are catching a few rays. Ahh...the good old days of railroading.
