A day for F unit domination and an engine swap.

GP and three B units are backing to the train after the four F's and U33C pulled away.

Scrap metal on the move west. They got a BN number but were some of the first to be retired.

I used Northern Pacific's cinder pile for elevation. The State highway department used the cinders during the winter instead of sand for traction. These days the EPA would no doubt make the railroad bury the cinders as hazardous waste.

Train #74 is on the west side of the city off the King Avenue overpass. Still being farmed at this time, it took a while but the area is now fully developed.

I saw the patched NP unit heading toward the diamond at Savanna and tried to get setup for a decent shot, but this was all I managed. I saw a lot of patched GN stuff, but this was my sole Northern Pacific unit.

Two former Burlington Northern locomotives, executive F-unit BN-1 and U30C 5383, now enjoy their retirement years at the Illinois Railway Museum. These two were parked side-by-side during Diesel Days 2021.

Another 157 drags into town with a lot of newer second-generation power. The GP9 still leads the big boys proudly displaying its shiny bell.

One of the early versions of H41 and Burlington Northern's new contract to move Portland General Electric coal. The cars definitely aren't over loaded.

Saddle Peak is just above the 7248 and the Bridger Mountains.

BN's Helena Local rounds a curve in Montana. Yes, I'm afraid what you think might of happened, happened. The little guy in front of the GP38-2 took one for the team. Oh, the carnage! I'll never forget that day. This was taken on BN's route between Great Falls, and Helena, which is now closed.

Plodding their way up out of the Helena Valley train 175 is definately needing a helper at Bozeman.

Burlington Northern westbound train 31 accelerates past the former St. Louis-San Francisco passenger station at Webster Groves, Missouri, USA, 14 February 1982. BN GP40-2 3056, 3041, 3043 & 3053, still in Frisco paint, get their hustle on through the snow.

BN 5550 leads a n eastbound train through Savanna in March of 96.

In for major repair damage. 1510 was one of the few repairable engines involved in a head-on wreck north of Great Falls.

Both shop critters came with the 1970 Burlington Northern merger from the Northern Pacific.

An interesting placement for a semaphore. Empty coal train early in the morning entering the yard.

Not the first place I'd think of for a Volkswagen dealrship.

#74 passes the local #382 on its way to Butte from Great Falls. The Union Pacific power is returning from Canada off the rock train. Don't recall ever seeing the empty phosphate cars returned on this train or any other.

Skyline was too short for many meets and eventually ended up unused.

A matched set of former Great Northern GP9's. Something rare for me.

I'm reposting this backdated version of this (www.flickr.com/photos/161714499@N02/53980292913/in/datepo...) photo I created in Photoshop. Now without ditch lights.

Fifty car grain trains were the norm and manageable.

Grain train XO5 takes the corner past the siding of Skyline approaching the viaduct over Skyline Creek.

I feel that the investment in equipment and capacity improvements as seen here, to move Wyoming coal some thirty years ago will never be repeated. It was a great time to be trackside.

BN 738-1760-1756-5925-5341 The end of an era has arrived. The 738 is in the shop for any usable parts to be removed before it gets added to the deadline.

GP-9 1760 still carries the steam locomotive bell the Northern Pacific added when the engine was new.
