from Block-a-palooza ( Cherry House Quilts) block 4

126 West Hastings Street, Vancouver, BC.

Description of Historic Place:

The Ralph Block a three-storey masonry commercial building on West Hastings Street in Vancouver.

Heritage Value:

The value of the Ralph Block lies in its location in a cluster of three- and four-storey early commercial buildings. Together they represent the patterns of retail shopping and services around the turn of the twentieth century in Vancouver. Although the fashionable shopping area moved to the south and west in the 1920s, West Hastings Street still continued to be viable as a blue-collar retail strip. Smaller businesses flourished as they catered to the shoppers drawn to the larger outlets, as well as to the needs of the local residents.

Built in 1899 for merchant William Ralph by architects Parr and Fee, this building is an unusual local example of the use of cast iron in commercial buildings. Although not as elaborate as examples in New York, the use of brick piers enclosing cast iron mullions is notable. Ralph was a wholesaler and retailer who sold McClary stoves, ranges and furnaces, as well as Cleveland and Rambler bicycles, but he was also a bridge builder who specialized in iron structures for the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Dominion Bridge Company. The use of cast iron allowed for larger windows than the norm. This treatment, although with brick spandrels, is also found on the adjacent Henderson Block.

The building is best known as the home of the White Lunch Restaurant from 1913 to 1988. This blue-collar eatery, popular with the truckers who carried dairy products and farm produce from the Fraser Valley for distribution throughout the downtown area, survived several economic cycles but was unable to overcome the serious downturn in the late 1980s. Upstairs from the restaurant, the White Palace Rooms, provided affordable accommodation for those who could not make the return trip with their trucks.

The Ralph Block has been combined with its neighbour, the Henderson Block (122 West Hastings Street) as one commercial outlet, through the removal of a common wall.

Character-Defining Elements:

The character-defining elements of the historic place include:

- form, scale and massing

- its presence in a grouping of three- and four-storey early commercial buildings

- its functional relationship with other buildings within the Hastings Street strip and adjoining neighbourhoods

- built right to the lot line with no setbacks

- characteristics of Edwardian commercial architecture, including cast iron mullions with enclosing masonry piers, simple cornice with corbelled ornamentation, pattern of fenestration on upper storeys, slightly bowed front, pilasters which run from the bottom of the second storey to the top of the third-storey windows, and corbelled decoration at the top of the spandrels

- building name and date below cornice

- retail presence on the main floor

- the 'White Lunch' entrance sign beneath the modern covering

Dopo il primo MiniCD "Down With the Madness" uscito per Countdown Records in Luglio 2007, i Concrete Block suonano costantemente e condividono il palco con Sepultura, Sick Of It All, Murphy's Law, Maroon, Shattered Realm, Skarhead, Agnostic Front, The Business, Slapshot e tanti altri.

Il bassista viene rimpiazzato perchè trova posto in un TV show come stand up commedia e l'album nuovo prende forma. Si arriva al 2013 con una piena attività live e "Twilight of the Gods", l'ultimo lavoro uscito per F.O.A.D. Records, registrato al One Black Sox studio da Carlo Girardi. E' la storia continua…

This block is "Caned Squares" from Quilter's Cache. The crosses are paper pieced but the rest uses quick strip-piecing techniques -- this would be a great block for someone new to paper piecing.

this is the entire block that is repeated throughout my favorite quilt. i'll need to make 36 of these for the size quilt i want (read: BIG! m + i fight over the covers at night. we need BIG.).

i have now made 12 out of the 144 small 25-patch blocks needed. i may need to take a break + work on some of those 4-patch blocks. those 1-inch squares are intense.

i already have a new appreciation for this little number (and re-thinking the boisterous comment i left on it . . . )

I would love to get an old wood carving block, but this is the best I can do so far. I don't think it is that old (totally ignorant). It is fixed to a block of hardwood, probably mahogany 10/8ths inch x 3.5 inch x 2 inch.

Ahhh... shouldn't have started this at night when I was tired - the middle square of yellow polka dots was sewn in facing down... grrr.... And not sure I like the green fabric

When I was a kid, my dad built a house and did the wall to the laundry room out of glass blocks. The room was off the small kitchen, and would've been exceptionally dark since the kitchen had no windows. The house was built up against a hill, and the kitchen was bordered on the side by a dirt wall, so odd as it was, you had to use electricity all day in there! Since it was a two story, a sky light wasn't possible, either. The tiny laundry room, which was between the kitchen and the garage, got what little light it could owing to those glass blocks.

Thus began my infatuation with glass blocks! In South Florida, a friend of mine had neon lights put inside a glass block wall that partitioned his living room from the hallway. That sort of thing was big down there in the 90's. I'll never forget how cool it looked! Of course, you have to like things transparent and shiny, but if you do, these things are strong, and create an effect that while retro, is really impressive.

I took a shot of this one while in Bushman Park, in the rest room. To conserve energy, the city had built the rest rooms so that the front walls were partially made of glass blocks to let the light in. You can't see through them, and they let tons of light in!

I have spring fever. There is no cure. I must simply wait for it to pass. I'm currently experiencing an itch to get my hands in soil, the need to pick out seeds to plant, and everything I work on happens to have soft colors. I'm sure I'm not the only one with spring fever this time of year, am I? :)

Drunkard's Path for curves class turned pretty garden stones (its the fever I tell ya). The block finished out at 18" sq. and I like it best on the tilt. It reminds me of a stone pattern for a garden path but if you happen to know what it is really suppose to be called please do tell. I have yet to decide how many more blocks to do. Should I do three more for a baby quilt or go ahead and make enough for a throw. Hmmmm, I'll keep you posted.

I had these blocks made by Pella Engraving.
