Morning rush-hour traffic in Seattle yesterday was greeted with a a giant blimp 200 feet in the air inviting them to "Join The Flotilla" and take part in mass direct actions to stop Shell's planet destroying oil rigs bound for the arctic.
In addition to damning us with irreversible climate chaos, Arctic
drilling would inevitably lead to a ecological disaster. We the People of Puget Sound say "sHell No!" to the Port of Seattle granting Shell Oil use of our public lands and the traditional lands of the Duwamish as a staging ground for Ecotrocity.
Join the Flotilla, sign-up for trainings on Kayaks, water safety, and more!
Commissioner Bill Bryant laughed off the outrage of Seattleites. Bryant smugly made light of people acting out of moral clarity to disrupt Shell's audacious arctic drilling scheme with their bodies and their kayaks. Well, we take that as a challenge. This moment is an opportunity for people from across this region to unite against so-called "leaders" who act as if everything is up for sale.
A massive nonviolent presence on the water, fueled by both our love for this beautiful place AND our commitment to leaving future generations a livable, thriving planet could be strong enough to upset Shell's plans and help us all shift course. Similar to 1999, arrogance and foolishness is inadvertently mustering the will of "We the People," this time it's on the water as well, in the form of a people's fleet, and potentially a flotilla of unprecedented magnitude.

Together, we can do something historic on this Salish Sea. If you don't think a small thing can make a big difference, then you've never been stuck inside of a tent with a mosquito. This is your opportunity to become part of the Mosquito Fleet, a nonviolent, on water action force for good, "Swarming against global warming," as one of its founders John Sellers says.
Opportunity favors the prepared so that what we are going to do. The growing coalition is partnering with Alki Kayak Tours to provide this uprising with access to safety and skills trainings, as well as some creative tactics and opportunities to engage in on water actions. By sliding-scale donations, whether you can pay $5 or $50, we invite you to get on the water and Skill Up (Kayaks provided). Bring your own if you like. Instruction will be tailored to experience levels from beginning to advanced.
We will be adding multiple additional dates and training opportunities. Check out kayak trainings at www.shellno.org/

A blimp, or non-rigid airship, is a floating airship without an internal supporting framework, or a keel. A non-rigid airship differs from a semi-rigid airship and a rigid airship (e.g., a Zeppelin) in that it does not have any rigid structure, neither a complete framework nor a partial keel, to help the airbag maintain its shape. Rather, these aircraft rely on both a higher pressure of the lifting gas (usually helium, rather than hydrogen ) inside the envelope and the strength of the envelope itself. The part underneath is called the buckle.
The term "blimp" refers only to free-flying aircraft. The term is sometimes erroneously used to refer to the tethered craft known as moored balloons. While often very similar in shape, moored balloons have no propulsion and are tethered to the ground.
Wednesday August 26th the Spirit of Innovation made its final lift off in Suffield, Ohio. This airship is headed to Carson, California to replace the decommissioned Spirit of America. My wife and I took the opportunity to catch a few shots as it departed the Wingfoot hanger in Suffield, Ohio early Wednesday morning. She flew by her new replacement Wingfoot One upon departing.

The term Goodyear Blimp has traditionally referred to any one of a fleet of airships operated by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, used mainly for advertising and capturing aerial views of live sporting events on television. The term blimp itself is defined as a non-rigid airship – without any internal structure, the pressure of lifting gas contained within the airship envelope maintains the vessel's shape. Wikipedia
This blimp flew over our neighborhood recently. There's no mistaking the sound one makes. I went for my camera and captured this shot...

Shot in September 2005. I found this blimp to be Peter Maxesque. It was shot in Seal Beach, CA, as it was approaching the sun.

The DirecTV blimp was in Cincinnati, Ohio over the August 4th weekend for the Reds-Cardinals baseball games.
The DIRECTV blimp launched in October 2007. The blimp flies mainly over live sporting events.
The second generation A-170LS Video Lightsign Lightship features a video screen that displays full color video images day or night.
The airship is owned and operated by The Lightship Group, an advertising company based in Orlando, Florida.
Manufactured mostly by American Blimp Corporation, the airship has a length of 178 ft (54 m) and a width of 46 ft (14 m) with a volume of 170,000 cubic feet (4,800 m3) of helium. The term Lightship comes from the internal illumination system which gives the advertiser of the airship a new reason to fly at night time.
The Airship's envelope and ballonet were designed and manufactured by ILC Dover, a manufacturer of flexible materials and softgoods based out of Frederick, Delaware
The length of the cabin or gondola is 11.4 ft (3.5 m) with a width of 5 ft (1.5 m) The airship is also designed to carry a maximum of 8 passengersplus the pilot.
The cruising speed is generally around 32 mph (51 km/h)with a maximum speed of 48 mph (77 km/h) when favorable winds are present.
The airship needs a crew of at least 14 members which includes 2 pilots, 2 crew chiefs, mechanics, video lightsign operator and additional ground team.

Last week world’s greatest zeppelin (some call it a blimp) flew over the city of Pijnacker and her surroundings. The zeppelin followed the N 470 an important road between Zoetermeer and Rotterdam. A great number of inhabitants of the area was invited to come along, 12 at a time. Photos were taken during the start at Rotterdam Airport.

This is the Goodyear Blimp Enterprise which I got to fly in and pilot once long ago
This shot was taken a Hanscom Field in Lexington, MA in the summer of 1986
This is how they keep the entire Goodyear Blimp from floating back into the air. At Allaire Airport. Monmouth County, NJ
Awesome.

Here's a recent photo I took of the Goodyear Blimp flying over the Indian River. Goodyear is retiring the existing blimps and replacing them with new ones.
Notice the flag waving at the end. Also, that is one of the tether lines you see descending from the nose.
They are on a sunset flight over the beach. This is a pretty good view of the cabin deck. I was not able to read the digital display because I wanted to get a good photo, if possible.
After it flew over my home, the 'Spirit of America' headed for the nearby Los Alamitos Army Airfield. I anticipated it was there for pilot training (I'd seen it over my home yesterday), so I drove to the south edge of the airfield (to Arbor Park); I was clearly the only vehicle parked there, and it seems as if the pilot was using my 4-Runner as a 'pivot point' reference. For a dozen circles, the blimp did "pylon turns" directly overhead, giving me a half dozen passes to photograph and video its maneuvering. An incredibly rare opportunity!
The Goodyear Blimp's paddock is adjacent to the northbound side of the 405 freeway in Carson, California. In this image the Blimp has just launched itself and is floating above the 405's southbound lanes. (By the way, I was not driving when I took this shot; I was in the front passenger seat, and shot the image through the front windshield of the vehicle I was in.) Olympus OM-2N and Ektar 100 film. Scanned on an Epson V500.
