Bladder polyps (Na’vi name: rawp) are small, rounded plants that grow in clusters on the forest floor, resembling blue-tinged stones. The larger leaves store water and salt, and are grazed on by animals and harvested by the Na’vi. They have smaller brown leaves close to the ground are able to absorb high concentrations of ammonia, and can use animal waste as a form of nutrition. When leaves are removed, new ones grow quickly in their place.
Most other plants are unable to use manure as a direct food source; however, the bladder polyp is a halophyte, and can survive in very salty soils. The salt accumulating in the larger leaves absorb water through osmosis. They grow in a wide range of locations, and there are even patches of them up and at the top of Iknimaya, the "Stairway to Heaven."
The bladder polyp is eaten by the Na’vi for its juicy and salty taste, which is somewhat like a pickle.
Bladder wrack, Fucus vesiculosus, and the common jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, Loch Eriboll, Ard Neackie, Sutherland. The air bladders keep the algae near the sea's surface, to capture as much light energy as possible for photosynthesis. The brown pigmentation protect the algae's cells from damage by sunlight.

I never spent much time at the shore when I was young - we went to the mountains for our vacations - so I never thought much about seaweed. It goes on to say, "Brown algae seaweeds live mainly in cold water, and the larger species are so numerous that they can sustain entire ecosystems in their own right. The air bladders of giant kelp are so buoyant that sea otters are able to use the blades as anchors to prevent themselves from floating away when they sleep ."

This item is officially knowns as a "bladder bag." I may have actually heard it called that one time. In common parlance, it is known as a "piss pump." When I was in the fire business, piss pumps were made of black rubber, but otherwise they looked like this one. Completely full, a piss pump holds 5 gallons of water. That's 40 pounds of weight at sea level. Piss pumps are used during mop up. The pogue with the piss pump squirts some water, then the pogues with the shovels and pulaskis work it into the burning organic matter. The pogue with the pump tends to be more generous with the water when the piss pump is full (and heavy) and less generous when the piss pump is running low (and light). Once the piss pump is emptied, it usually means a hike back to the water source for a fill up.

This is a bladder stone one of our surgeons removed this morning. This stone is probably some combination of struvite and calcium oxalate. You can see significant spiculation.
The Providence Foundation is pleased to present Ellen Bridger, Director of the Providence Health Center’s Fourth Floor and Donna Nichols with a check in the amount of $23,215.90 for the purchase of two new bladder scanners. One of the goals of Providence is to reduce the number of Catheter Acquired Urinary Tract Infections among our Providence patients. One way to help achieve this goal is simply to reduce the number of catheters placed. A bladder scanner can allow our nurses to actually see the amount of urine in a patient’s bladder to know whether or not a catheter is needed at all. A bladder scanner can also allow our nurses to see how much urine is left in the bladder after voiding. The bottom line is that with the aid of bladder scanners, our patients enjoy safer care and can potentially avoid additional, costly time in the hospital. Approximately 750 Providence patients a year will benefit from the purchase of two new, state of the art bladder scanners.
