This was a delight to stitch due in part to the bright colours.
It was my first foray into Blackwork stitchery and really love the effect.
Pattern was from designer Lesley Teare.
Stitched on 28 count DMC Linen Natural with DMC threads and Mill Hill beads.
Finished as a flat fold by my husband.
Was gifted as a birthday present to my neighbour who turned 90 today.

In-progress photo of a bookmark I made for my son's preschool teacher. Silk floss on 32-count white Belfast linen. Made in 2007.
This is a photo of a blackwork sampler I did back in 1989. It was fun to do, now I wish I had done it in black though. I hope to get more of my TAST stitches done today once my work is done. What is everyone up to?

Blackwork sample I did a while ago - a vine motif adapted from a 16th century long cover in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The stems are in braid and coral stitch and the grapes in pattern darning and detached buttonhole, outlined in overcast stem stitch.
The center bands of the rushnyk ends- the 1st is traditional Ukrainian, the center a simple border in Assisi, and the upper adapted from a pattern in an 1890x de Dillmont.
Forms a Z in the back. Sometimes called Z-stitch. The Italians work it from the back, and sometimes put the Z in front and the squares on the reverse.
This stitch is found in a lot of antique embroideries, including in Punto Antico pieces where it is used as a hem ornament and also in the body of the piece, combined with the diagonal square stitch, to form geometric shapes.
Here's the scanned and enlarged image I used as a pattern, alongside my embroidered version. Not bad, if I do say so myself!

Lady Amie Sparrow displayed an Indian scroll and an (in-progress) blackwork embroidered caul. See also Martelle's photo.
First band done. This one is a little slow to work - the pattern has a lot of vertical movement . I really like the effect of it, though. This is from "New Carolingian Modelbook", with a small change to the outside edge.
Half the first band done, starting on the next. I modified this pattern from "New Carolingian" to make the 'tree' between the crosses symmetrical? Reversible? Oh, well, like you see it here... The foot on my embroidery stand is broken, and am having to work in a ring. Not really what I want to do, but I don't want to wait for a new frame to start either. I am happy with progress so far - have to stop and rest my eye frequently, and watch too much TV.
