The collar from Holbein's Pemberton portrait--this is probably around 10 hours in. I've finally figured out a smooth way to get through the lattices, and I've only messed up twice so far (I think I'll take out the right-hand of the cross motifs, because it's a thread off the whole way around, e.g.). Not entirely sure how to get the stitches to square up a little more nicely, but I'd like to think that overall this is coming along quite well. When so heavily embroidered, the linen backing becomes quite stiff; there may be a structural use for this once it's finished.
This will cover the inside of the collar. Blackwork embroidery worked over 4 threads using DMC cotton floss.

This design is Inspired by a recent trip to Melbourne National Gallery of Victoria. The colourful ceiling in the Great Hall is the largest stained glass ceiling in the world. I love the kaleidoscope of colors shine through.

As much of a portrait as I got of myself in my apron dress that day. I'm past the 3/4 mark on the scarletwork. Am starting to go cross-eyed.
Baroness Mistress Elisabeth Johanna von der Flossenburg was kind enough to talk with me about it.
Many motifs found in very old embroidery design books, like Siebmacher's and Quentel's (1527) , show motifs like the samples above where the outlines form steps. It is my hypothesis that these motifs could have been worked in this stitch and not in double-running stitch like other Blackwork motifs, because of the difficulty in forming a "stepped" motif in double running stitch .
